My dad and I would like to convert one of our old broken 5hp motors. We have build 2 eFoils, and 1 jetboard in the last two years. As battery's we are using old "but good" ready made 12S1P units from a Ford. They are 46 Ah / 2.07 kWh (44.4V). We did some calculations, and it looks like we will need to run 2 of the battery's in series. Doing this we will have a "24S2P" setup with just over 4 kWh, 46Ah and +88 volt (way over the safety voltage of not getting killed). (note: We are not 100% sure if we will do a 24S for safety reasons) The plan is to put this on a ZapCat boat, and they are made for going fast. If we run a motor like you guys are using (and us using the 24S setup) it will not run longer than 10 minutes at full speed. That is not even adding the extra resistance from cables / heat and so on. Am I correct with this 10 minutes, or am I way off? Also. Please note that we will never run full speed for 10 minutes, but it's nice for a reference value. What kind of current do you guys pull when you are running fullspeed?

Hi @iamKian! Thanks for the message. You know your stuff, and running 24S is a sweet spot for this motor. I did a quick google on the ZapCat, and it seems to run quite efficiently, so my guess, depending on load and conditions, is that, yes you could get about 10 mins at full power. We are allowing about 100A through to the motor at times (approx 12,000W), (which I don't quite recommend maybe because it spins up to an crazy rpm 😂), but doing the maths, a 2kWh battery at 12kW will give a runtime of about 10 mins. We generally always run at about 50A, so about 4-5kW (depending on battery SOC of course), and this is enough push to move along nicely but also gives about half an hour of travel time. I converted a Honda 2.3 4 years ago. Worked flawlessly till a storm flipped the dinghy and submerged the motor. Rebuild it with a waterproof motor/controller. Your build is best I have seen. Your power to weight ration is nuts. I have a few of the ANT bms. Can’t get more than 100 amp continuous out the 300 amp version. Have you had the same problem?

Hi @SunlightConversions! Nice to meet you, and thanks for dropping a line! The AntBMS's have worked fantastically, never had a problem attributed to them. They also output as needed, we have drawn up to 250A without problems. We draw 100A on a daily basis, no problems. The BMS will start to get warm, and in the 250A case, it does get hot, so keeping it well ventilated is needed. Could the problem you describe above simply be that the motor you are using will to draw more than about 100A. What I mean, is if you put a larger motor on there, is it possible it would then draw more than 100A? Alternatively, is the battery capable of more than 100A, or is it getting seriously tired about there, i.e. "maxing out", and that is where the bottleneck is? Hope this helps in finding what the bottleneck could be. /John

I would like to do what you did, but with a larger motor (replacing engine on Johnson 115) and with hybrid design over battery. Range of full electric just doesn't cut it. I imagine that this is a bit more complicated, as you have a generator supplying a stream of power instead of a battery. Where would you start?

After all, almost nobody's needs are exactly alike, and so for the best results you should customise your build, for your pruposes. Sorry about that @WillJohnson, totally with you on the frustration! We needed to change a designed part on the motor which didn't perform well, and we didn't put it on the website. It took some time, but we are now doing final testing on the motor. Already photographed and looking pretty, the moment we're satisfied, we'll let you know when it's good to order. What kind of range or hours/minutes can you run at 50-70% throttle? I guess I’m wanting to know the range and is it a suitable all day fishing boat? Of coarse, a trolling motor being used while fishing and this being used just to move from spot to spot.

Totally dependant on size of boat and conditions @jasonhinson3812. We have a pack which gives us about 15-20kms in our tiny boat and if we take it easy. But generally we just gun it because we only have short distances to go😅
