Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

We had the same set up for a portable corral for our sting of horses for elk and deer hunting here in Idaho. I will say, the horses stayed in the electric corral just fine, but, elk just pushed thru....and I think bears would too. Aaah, but, we learned that one thing that really acts as a deterrent, is to place aluminum foil over the conductive fabric with peanut butter on the aluminum foil. place the foil about 6 feet apart. The elk or bear will lick the peanut butter and the spark and voltage will go thru their sensitive tongues.....THEY WON'T COME BACK. I've seen it work on a big dry cow elk trying to get into our garden.....she tried once...that was it....great video.

Good morning Lonnie, nice video and a good explanation on the install. One suggestion on the tape or wire, which ever someone might use. Install that tape/wire to the outside of the post. A bear or any other critter for that matter will be knocking the tape off accidentally as they are being shocked. There is also the potential that the tape will give and come off the insulators before penetrating the fur while not delivering voltage to the skin. As a rule of thumb, if you are keeping something out, put the wire on the outside of the poles, if you are keeping it in, wire on the inside. I use tape in a similar setup to protect my beehives on our remote locations. Tape on the outside with sufficient power and I have no problems. One dirty trick another beekeeper taught me was to put a few strips of raw bacon on the wire. As soon as Smokey comes in for a good sniff or nibble he gets a wicked ZAP right on the snout sending him the other way in a hurry.

I just picked up one of the d cell ones for backpacking. No matter how you look at it any kind of bear protection is better than none. When I am able to boat or quad camp I'll definitely upgrade to a system like yours. A kid that went to the neighboring high school in the small town I grew up in was mauled to death by a bear. That shaped the way I take bear safety ever since. You can never be too careful when it comes to apex predators.

Bear fences actually work great. They immediately sense the electric field the fence creates and when they get a little shock, they always back away (and usually run after one or two).

I suppose a drawback of an electric fence would be that some campers would feel safe cooking and storing food where they are camped instead of sensibly keeping food away from where you sleep. You don’t want to draw a bear to you under any circumstances.

When I would put up an electric fence for my cattle I would always tie plastic bags between the posts to let the cattle know where the fence was. I always used steel fence rods. Some people liked rebar because it would keep the insulators from slipping, but I never had a problem with the smooth rods. I liked to use the hottest solar fencer, too. One advantage to the solar fence charger is that it will provide a charge even on cloudy days.

I would add some branches that are jagged and place them around my tent also like an African boma . Ultimately it it isn't bearproof but it can give you another precious few seconds to get a firearm ready , especially if you are sound asleep at 3am . Also keep a fire going if it's possible . Good idea you have there with the more powerful deterrent perimeter fence . Never been to Alaska but I watch every show about it , your state is the last place on earth it seems a man can almost be free . I hate the rat race down here in Commiefornia . God bless and I look forward to more videos of yours .

I am a single lady who lives in western montana and I enjoy the mountains, am a beginner in these things and I came across your video and really liked what you are teaching here. One thing is I am always scared that a bear or something will try and get in my tent, so I only went out once last year. I want to overcome my fear and be safe and not let being a single lady stop me from enjoying the mountains. I even do not go far from my vehicle and that hinders my exploration too. with grizzlies and black bears here as well as mountain lions, etc...what do you do when you want to stop get out and do some hiking to explore.....anyways thank you for this video, I am going to do this, and maybe I will feel a little safer and start camping more.

Setting up in an octagon will transfer fence tension load to all eight posts, instead of just four. Also, by doing so, you protect an equal amount of square footage with less perimeter distance, which equates to higher joules of energy to any part of your perimeter. Lastly, try to keep the positive feeder lead well isolated from the soil and the negative lead. You'll have energy leakage through that insulation, which is usually only rated for 600 volts.

Well don’t ya thinking finding 8 usable posts is more difficult that 4? And let’s be real, the amount of force distributed amongst the posts would be negligible to a bear. If it wants to it’ll crush the fence and crush the tent. It’s all about deterrence here

Have used the tape for creating temporary horse paddocks. Works great. For those who have asked about gates/doorways you can usually get the unit for that (sorry, forget what it's actually called) that will interrupt the circuit when you lift it out of its holder from the same place where you buy the fencing (livestock people will know what I mean, just ask the people in the store).

It's not needed, especially with black bear. They are timid. Only one person a year dies from black bears each year and that's usually while hiking. This fence is unnecessary, expensive, heavy, and unpleasant to camp around. Maybe in grizzly country, but even then, it still seems like overkill.

Am a farmer. I've run tons of electric fence. Parmak is a good brand. That's a heavy, metal one. Zareba Systems is a brand with good electric fencing. They make plastic fence posts that hold the tape-style fence. They're made to to be pushed into the ground with your boot. They're light and don't require insulators, so you'll pack less. . Fiberglass fence posts can become troublesome, if they don't have a durable coating. Weathered fiberglass begins to break down, and when handling the posts, you get microscopic fiberglass slivers in your hands.

Cool. My homemade fence system is a little different. I use a "D" cell energizer but run it from the optional 12v source (actually the replacement battery from a unit similar to yours). I use motion sensor, solar lamps to light it up. The fiberglass electric fence posts from the farm supply store are worth the money. I keep a few screw-in Insulators for roots and trees in the kit as well. When you stand barefoot on moist ground my fence is a different beast than with shoes on...just saying. Sleep well gents!

You can hear the clicking of the machine when functioning properly, and supposedly the animal can smell the ozone given off by the electricity. Don't know if this is true. Realizing the video is 7 years old, I very much like your concept far better than others I have seen. I am planning a trip with wife and dog from Colorado to Anchorage and back next year. But my daughter and her hubby and 2 dogs will be going one way to live there (she just retired from the Army). Did you just simply make one run at 3 different levels with the tape? Dog will definitely have to be on a tight lead. The fence would be a backup to vehicle mechanical issues. We would do lodging on our travel. But would love to be able to be safe and secure if failure on the road. This definitely would be a handy nice to have item for boon-docking in CO with the black bears. Yes, I know, my food supply would still be with me, so that could be an invitation, all the more reason for a fence!!!

The poly tape wire used in this video is continuous. So it is not three separate lines but rather only one line ran around the perimeter three times. Hope that made sense. I have learned since making this video that the galvanized sheet metal that I had fabricated to use for the connections to the fence was not very conductive. I have since changed it out for copper and using the copper material in the same exact way to join the positive and negative leads to the fence.

I wonder if some reflective tape would help with nighttime visibility, I cant recall if you said the cord you are usinv is reflective. This may allow for efficient lumination om low light this not impacting your sleep with bright lights shining on you. But wait no demo? Come on man take one for the team bro! Just messing with ya great vid as usual, and I agree having used many bear fences without visibility they are pointless.

Each of the "fence" posts have reflective capabilities since in reality they are made to be used as driveway markers. The poly tape does *not* have any special reflective abilities of it's own. However, with it being white in color, it should still reflect the night time flashing lights quite well I believe. These particular lights that I have, have a very focused beam due to the magnifying lens. I personally would rather the light was more diffused for this purpose. However since the light is quite focused then the light straying off to the side will be minimal and will not shine on the tent or shelter as much if it is not aimed directly at the shelter. Your idea of reflective tape however is a great idea. Maybe some white colored tape that is taped to a stiffener such as a piece of HDPE sheet cut from the side of a milk jug. Some velcro could then be attached to the strip to make it removable / reusable. Make it about 6 inches long so that when wrapped in a circle around the fence poly tape it might be about an inch and a half around. Place these every 3 - 4 feet on the top poly tape. Sounds like an excellent idea to me.

Do you set both lights up at night, or is one a backup? In the video you didnt really show how you set up the lights. I am imagining setting a light up high, perhaps from a tree shining down so the light can reflect off all four sides of the fence. I also picture a scene from a horror movie, if you ever did see a bear outside your fence at night, the flashing light with it would be quite the spectacle.

I like both those ideas. What kind of pull poundage were you able to achieve by using the fiberglass inside the PVC pipe? Do you have a link to a video perhaps that would show how someone did that? I am familiar with using just the plain PVC pipe and thermo shaping it for use as a bow.

Dave Canterbury and several other people I have videos on using fiberglass rods to increase the poundage of a PVC bow if I remember correctly 5 rods inside of a 1 inch PVC we'll kick it up to a 75 pound draw

that is an awesome small kit. how do you work a door type area? If you have the switch away from camp for sun, how do you get in and out? Do you have a swing away section, or an overlap type section! Great looking fence, love it!

I have not fashioned a gateway yet. What me and Charley have been doing with his is to lower the top strand to step over during the day and to raise it for night. We only energize the fence at night. One thing I can do when setting the energizer away from the fence, is to use an insulated alligator type electrical clamp to make the positive fence connection. To de-energize the fence, I would then only have to unclip the clamp from the fence wire and clip it onto the nonconductive fiberglass fence post.

I have a solar system for my animals and it works great for around the house and you can take it to the outdoors . This is a setup if you have means of riding in or drive into your camp but backpacking on foot you have to go with a lighter unit even if its your warning device is better than nothing especially if you are in a area you cannot have a fire .

Make sure your power supply be it a battery or the solar are inside the fence or if you need to get it into better sun out of the way so if the bear bumps the supply wire. I’ve also run a wire off the fence and up high to supply a fence around my meat pole
