If you're looking to make your own Braun Cleaning solution, here's an alternative I've had success with. For those who can't order the Braun Cleaning Cartridges at a sales price, this alternative will save you quite a bit of money.
Remember there may be other alternative solutions out there, but this is the only one I've actually tried, and it works well. To be on the safe side I will have to say to use it at your own risk, however I don't see how it will be a problem.
For those who can't order the Braun solution directly from Amazon.com, this alternative will save you a lot of money. Amazon.com already has the cleaning solution cartridges at a very reasonable price, however if you can't get them shipped to your location, other stores (local or online) usually charge much more. Therefore making your own cleaning solution is worth the savings.

    Another tip for people. If you leave the pack in the shaver, simple evaporation will decrease the fluid content. You can make one pack last longer by removing it and putting the cap back on.

    Thanks for this tip.I have made my own cleaning fluid following your instructions and adding lemon essential oil.This has worked wonderfully well and given a new lease of life to my old braun series 7 shaver that I originaly bought without the cleaning station to make the cost cheaper.The lemon oil does 3 things - it lubricates, it gives a nice fresh aroma to the cleaned shaver and finally lemon oil has anticeptic properties.I added 5ml of essential lemon oil to the 500ml bottle and this 1 in 100 ratio works fine.Thanks again and regards.

    you can cut the rubbing alcohol by 1/3 with water and just add a small amount of any essential oils you want for a good fragrance. example: lemon. orange, patchouli , lavender, mint, cedar, rose, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, juniper, sage, menthol, tea tree, wintergreen, ect. about a half to a full teaspoon depending on how strong you want it to be.

    I've been using 70% to 90% rubbing alcohol and essential oil in my clean and renew cartridge. It really depends on what the stores have in stock as far as the rubbing alcohol. I make sure I clean the cartridge really well as opposed to some of these other guys in these videos which are just nasty. I probably changed the alcohol and essential oil after each time the battery needs to be charged. I find that the essential oils smell nice and do lubricate my skin.

The clorox does a fine job of cleaning off grime and sanitizing electric razor heads, and I've used it for years. No ill affects to razor head blades or on face skin afterwards. The method I use costs virtually nothing if you save the used cartridges and works well for me. I simply strain the used Braun fluid through coffee filter paper. 2 or 3 used cartridges usually provide sufficient cleaning fluid to fill an empty one. The filtered fluid is clear and lemon yellow (no longer blue). Amazing how much gunk is left in the filter paper ;-) After washing an empty cartridge, allow it to dry thoroughly.

    Like many before me, I recommend about 5ml lemon essential oil with 500ml alcohol (I use rubbing alcohol, but I'm going to investigate denatured alcohol when I stock up further). I like my mix more than the original contents of the cartridge. Arguably I use too much lemon oil, but it smells lovely.

    Denatured alcohol is usually toxic to drink, Braun uses a specific kind that's "non-toxic" but it's much harder to get for the general public. It's better to just use Everclear 190 grain because it's ethanol just the same as "Denatured" but no impurity. Denaturing the alcohol provides absolutely zero benefit to a person using it on their face, it's only to make it undrinkable.

    In Australia it's harder to get rubbing alcohol in large bottles, although I did eventually find an electrical wiring store (?!) which sold 1 litre Isopropyl alcohol for $20. I've had it for 12 months and am only half way through the bottle. The trick is that you need to 1. clean, then fill the cleaning cartridge to only two-thirds, then 2. add 4ml of nail polish remover (eg Cutix...courtesy of my wife!) - otherwise the Braun unit won't detect the cartridge is full. Not sure why, but it works

    The essential oil isn't just for the scent, it's also for the machine lubrication. It's important to keep it lubricated to prolong the life of the parts and provide a smoother shave. Alcohol only will require faster replacement of the blades and foil. As a manufacturer of an inexpensive and high-performing Clean & Renew replacement called Shaver Shebang, we have done quite a bit of testing of many formulations and have deep knowledge on this subject.

    FYI to anyone who uses Norelco shavers with HQ9 heads. I just picked up several packages of HQ9s for 9 bucks each at my local Walmart (Quincy MA). Walmart corporate MAY have discontinued these and replaced them with new numbers. In that case the discount would be national. Or it may be a local store decision. I don't know. All I can tell you is to check your nearby store. The packages may or may not say 9 dollars. Mine said 25 dollars so I decided to buy one, since 25 is a reasonable discount on an item that hardly ever sees a price reduction. Imagine my surprise when I got to the checkout and it rang up at 9 bucks! So I went and grabbed 2 more. I would have grabbed more but every razor has a lifespan. Don't know what that is but I'd be surprised if the battery and motor lasted beyond 3 of 4 head replacements.

    After experimenting with alcohol and essential oils and then going back to the original Braun cartridge I can only say that it just didn’t worth the trouble. The alternative solution leaves the head and the cleaning base filled with gray sludge. You can also clearly see it clogging the intermediate cutter and accumulating inside the head when removed. Also, the shaver leaves residue on the skin no matter how often you clean it and of course its performance is noticeably reduced.

    The original cleaning solution contains denatured alcohol, which is quite different than isopropylic alcohol. You should be using denatured alcohol which leaves much less residues when drying up than isopropylic alcohol.

  • @kevinmoss4908

    @kevinmoss4908

    10 жыл бұрын

    Agree with Anita, Denatured Alcohol just means it has crap added to make it unpleasant to drink so it isn't taxed the same way and can be used in large quantities for industrial uses. So denatured alcohol likely has more unpleasant residue and is likely to be more irritating to your skin than isopropyl. Stick with anything labeled isopropyl or rubbing alcohol, both will be fine.

  • @Subparanon

    @Subparanon

    10 жыл бұрын

    Kevin Moss You're incorrect. Isoprypyl, rubbing, and denatured all evaporate leaving little to no residue behind. The reason you need to use denatured alcohol is that it does not act as strong as a solvent when it comes into contact with paint, plastic, and rubber. Rubbing alcohol and isopropyl do act as solvents on paint, rubber seals, and plastics. I made the mistake of using isopropyl alcohol when I first started doing this and ruined the paint on the head of my shaver, it pitted like it had been burned. It also dried out the gaskets in my base unit, increasing the rate at which the cleaning solution evaporates off.

    No need to buy refill solution packs. You can buy essential oils in liter quantities for under $70 in some cases, good enough for a lifetime. I mix a little mineral oil with my alcohol along with Tree Tea essential oil for my sensitive skin. Avoid the citrus like lemon or orange EO IMO, because it causes photo-sensitivity.

    It should work if you put in the correct amount of essential oil. Many, but not all Clean & Renew bases detect the specific gravity or density of the solution. Too little it shows empty, and the same for too much, but that requires a heck of a lot essential oil! As a manufacturer of an inexpensive and high-performing Clean & Renew replacement called Shaver Shebang, we have done quite a bit of testing of many formulations and have deep knowledge on this subject.

    Just use everclear 190 grain. It's the same exact ingredient as Braun uses except it has no "impurity" that's required of denatured alcohol. Then just put a few drops of whatever oil lubricant u want... I guess Tea Tree oil would work, it's an antiseptic. Denatured alcohol is the same thing as Everclear (ethanol) except for trade purposes (taxes) it has to be "poisoned" so it's undrinkable, that's what the "denatured" means. The "poison" they use for Braun is actually just a bitterant (makes it taste horrible) so it's non-toxic for your face.

    You might get cancer on your face from the denaturing chemical the manufacturer uses. I mean it's just true. Especially from shaving where there are micro abrasions to your skin allowing any leftover denaturing ingredients to seep in. There's a reason Braun uses SDA 40 B and not Home Depot formulation

    As has been mentioned, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE isopropyl alcohol for ethyl alcohol (yes, the same stuff in your scotch that has been "denatured" to make it undrinkable). You will probably damage your shaver as isopropyl alcohol is a much stronger solvent and will eat some plastics.

    90 or 100% won't properly disinfect the razor. There has to be water to allow the alcohol to cross the cells membrane and 70% is the sweet spot. Any lower than about 50% and there isn't enough alcohol to properly disinfect.
