For people who can't have access to the link up above (due to location), what is important that it's 30 PPI and that it's polyester. Polyester is what is water-repellant. Hakan says " the foam used for this purpose is hydrophobic" And yes, polyester is hydrophobic :P The thickness is important too, ie. 0.78. So try to get close to that as well.

Fifteen minutes ago, I saw Voiceover Village very convincingly prove Hakan is the best, I put one in my B&H cart, cause I'm no dummy, then I thought "let's just see if there's any other comparisons... A hundred bucks is a lot!" and I found this feckin genius. I didn't have to watch the video to know what you were gonna say, because I have a pond, and have been in the aquarium hobby for decades, but watch it I did, and GOOOOOOLLLLLL DANG if it ain't 100% a pond filter. Why isn't anyone selling knockoffs? (Why aren't I?) (Sorry, B&H. Don't worry. You'll get more of my money soon for something else!)

I unscrewed the pf80 pop filter from its gooseneck, bent a black metal hangar to the exact dimensions of my c414 xlii microphone and cut a small portion off the pond filter. Thanks for the video. Now I have my own perfect, custom pop filter with more fidelity than a fabric or metal filter! 👌

Ever since I saw the original Hakan pop filter on youtube reviews, I was convinced that, somewhere, I had seen the same filter material being used for something else. I had planned to visit commercial stores in search of such material as $99 seemed a little bit overpriced for the pop filter, in my opinion. Thank you Dracomies for the info. I'm ordering these filters online to make my own pop filters. According to most reviewers, the Hakan-type pop filters are some of the most efficient for blocking plosives on microphones. For the $6 I will be spending for the 6 pack of filters, if nothing more, I will conducting a very cheap experiment with plenty of potential for success. Keep providing great content Dracomies.

Even easier, just take a progresso soup can cut both ends off get it hot with a torch or on the stove or a fire of some kind (be careful) and just melt a perfect circle. You could also just push the can down on the foam and just cut around it with a box knife.

I was super hesitant on doing the video in the past because most of the pond filters I got were either too thick or too thin. I must have tinkered with quite a few batches. The ones I linked in that Amazon link were the first batch ever where it's practically identical imo -- that one in the link had the exact same texture, the exact same color, the exact same granular detail and almost the exact same thickness. They're imo made from the same factory - or a sister company - and that one is it. But what I notice about these pond filter companies, they disappear on Amazon after a while. All the other ones I bought, it shows I bought them on Amazon but they are no longer on Amazon. But this is the one that is the one imo - it's for damn sure a pond filter for sure.

You can also just leave it square, and get a gooseneck with one of those pinchy spring clips on the end and just clip it right in.

  • @Dracomies

It's definitely not a scrub daddy because those are a bit more thick and weigh more. I actually literally weighed different variants - but they most definitely are pond filters. The maker never mentions they invented the material, they mention they 'discovered' them. But get something about 30 ppi and about an inch in thickness and you're golden.

I had that idea too, but was disappointed. The cells of the aquarium filter weren't all open (there were thin films of plastic between some of the "threads" of the cell -- imagine if some of the holes in a spider web were filled by a thin film, that's about that), which is probably perfectly fine for an aquarium filter, but no way it doesn't affect the sound. Of course, the aquarium filter you bought may be different, but compare it to the Haken, with light shining through. Do you see the same thing I saw in the aquarium filter I bought?

LOL!!! I JUST said the same thing. It's absolutely no different than Aquarium Sponge Foam and the VERY Amazon ad that you showed is the very one that I'm ordering. Because it's only 20mm / .78" inch thick; just like the Hakan filter. I was thinking about getting the 1" thick one, but didn't desire to add more thickness than what was needed. So I'm going to stick with this. One thing I will say Hakan was DEFINITELY onto something with using this filter, because I just spoke with the main US distributor here in the states (Trans Audio Group, Las Vegas, NV), and the rep told me that using the Hakan OVER the Stedman is better, because there is no resonance, because the Stedman is made of steel and the Hakan is made of Open Cell Foam (Aquarium Foam). It was actually tested and proven that Aquarium Foam - Oops, I mean the Hakan Foam maximizes pop protection and minimizes coloration. Making it the most neutral and most effective pop filters out there. Amazing that they're price gouging foam to this degree. Thanks again for this vid that I would've have done myself to expose this company.
