Today we're going to review a waterproof Apple Watch case by Catalyst. We've put the case through its paces, submerging the case with an Apple Watch in it for 10+ hours in the Pacific Ocean as well as the taking it past the 16.4 ft depth protection. The Catalyst Waterproof case for the Apple Watch is one of the more useful Apple Watch accessories that we’ve used to date.
This Apple Watch case provides water protection up to 16.4 ft and drop protection of 6.6 ft and based on several hours of underwater usage; we’ve given this Apple Watch accessory a score of 4.4 Eh’s out of 5. Out of all the Apple Watch cases, this is one of the higher rated products due to the usefulness of the product. With all the praise out of the way, there is one thing that we hope Catalyst fixes on the case as we question the long-term usability of the case.
In terms of fit, the Catalyst case doesn’t feel flimsy unlike other Apple Watch bumpers that we've reviewed. The sleeve + hardshell setup is very similar to how Dog & Bone does the Wetsuit (no screen protector) which means that you don’t have any sort of screen sensitivity loss which is great. The edges of the case aren’t as high as other Apple Watch accessories which means getting to your device is a breeze.
We will note that installation/removal of the Apple Watch inside the Catalyst case is a little more difficult than your typical Apple Watch accessory as it requires you to pop the device out from the back which requires a bit hand strength. On our first case, we broke snap the back in half due to improper hand placement.
When it comes to the aesthetics of the case, it makes your Apple Watch look like it's sitting in an old school diving suit. This is a sportier Apple Watch accessory so we're ok with that. The only thing that we're not a big fan off is the fact that the screw used to secure the front/back pieces will start rusting after it gets wet.
When it comes to protection, the Catalyst waterproof case for the Apple watch is waterproof up to 16.4 ft that allow you to easily take it on any snorkel adventure that you want. For our Catalyst Waterproof Case Apple Watch review, we used the setup over a period of 10 days by submerging the Apple Watch in the Pacific Ocean several times a day. We had no issues with the waterproofing of the Catalyst during the test period and found nothing on the Apple Watch after the vacation that would indicate that saltwater had reached the back of the device.
Salt water and electronics don't mix so why would anybody take that chance with their Apple Watch?
In terms of practicality, we would only use this case on vacation BUT unlike other waterproof cases (like the HitCase and Optrix XD6) we didn't rush to take it off after a vacation. The Catalyst case isn't annoying enough that we itched to take it off.
We continued to use the Apple Watch with the Catalyst a couple of weeks after vacation and had no problem with it on a day-to-day basis, but the size does take away from the sleekness of the Apple Watch. Getting to your Apple Watch is a tad more difficult as the sound is a little muted coming from the Apple Watch and phone conversations seemed a little “staticky”.
The digital crown doesn’t feel as fluid or fast but is usable. The heart rate sensor on the Apple Watch still works as the green light seems to have no problem passing through the rubber sleeve that the Apple Watch sits in, but we did notice that heart rate readings took a little longer to register during lifting sessions. There were no issues with the heart rate readings in the water.

Thanks for the review! Mine is on its way today! My question is about the lack of screen cover: my Apple Watch screen has a small chipped corner. Do you think that will affect the waterproofing?
I swam with my Series 3 in the ocean with no waterproof case and had no problems. Still working to this day just fine.
I’ve been using Catalyst since day one. Once u put it on, generally you won’t be changing it around. This means you can’t play around with colours etc coz it is just too troublesome to fix, remove, fix back again. So basically I was stuck with a black sporty mannish looking watch lol. There are other colours now but in the past, there was just black lol. What I don’t like is the little strap that holds your band down breaks easily. And you can’t get a replacement. You have to buy a whole new case. However if you write in and pretty please a little, they might offer you a chance to buy a replacement strap ONCE or they will offer you a new watch case thingee at a discount. I have three boys and I’m a rough user so Catalyst makes it so much easier on my heart haha. I recently removed my second Catalyst case to play about with my Apple Watch. And I’ve already broken two tempered glass protectors for it in a week. Bummer. I was toying with getting regular straps and stuff for my watch, but seeing how I love to shower, swim with my watch too, I’m prob better off just going back to Catalyst. It’ll mean less pretty personalisation until they can offer a case that allows all that protection plus fun customisation *hint hint Catalyst* for both the smaller and larger watch sizes. I’m a lady but I like my watch face chunky, so please don’t assume only men buy larger watches & cut us off from prettier girlier options in future lol. I would rate the Catalyst 10/10 It works pretty damn well and is worth EVERY SINGLE CENT you spend on it. My Apple Watch is a few years old but it still looks spanking new. :)
After using it in salt water did you let it sit in fresh water? The general rule after diving is letting everything sit in fresh water and hose everything big down.

Yeah they stopped using the black screws years ago, I’ve had 3 generations of Apple Watch and have had one of these cases for each, I can tell you that these are the real deal, they have saved my watches from so many wall impacts and I can confidently get it wet and not have to worry about getting soapy water, dirty water, etc in the speaker or mic hole, it’s 100% worth the money!

Excellent review and was super helpful when purchasing the product. I have had the product about a month and the only downfall I found with it (besides the screw not being stainless steal and therefore is subject to rust, but you already mentioned that in your review), I found the band is a bit flimsy/flexible and 2 separate times my apple WATCH FELL OFF MY WRIST. This made me incredibly nervous so i went to a watch store and spoke to an expert. He pointed out what was happening was the silicone watch band was not rigid enough around the spring pins and will tend to grab the pin pulling it out of the holes in the case and resulting in it falling off your wrist. I did write to catalyst to let them know of this because I really think the case is the best on the market. I purchased the case through best buy so they replaced no problem. The case was a out of store product and just came in. I was hoping they may have fixed the problem with the band or the screw, but it seems they are still the same. I do not know how to find an exact replica of the screw in stainless steal because watch parts are very specific to the watch. However I was able to FIX THE BAND PROBLEM, by ordering another silicone band similar to the one that comes with the catalyst case but with a more rigid insertion base where the spring pins are located. Hopefully I will experience no more issues, but I wanted to share with you to show my appreciation for your review. Thank you. Revisiting your old video cause I’m back in the market for the case. Never actually got one. Quick question. I wear my watch on my right wrist with the crown on the bottom left, if that makes sense. Will the catalyst case support being worn that way? Still some the best channels out there. Thanks!

I haven’t gotten a water proof case...yet. I wore my watch snorkeling in the Florida keys and when I go to the beach near home. I do rinse my watch off with fresh water every time I got out though. I’ll probably spring for a waterproof case though cause there is a bit of stress the first couple min I dip my arm in the water. I do notice though that I start holding my arm out of the water though when able. Not as freeing as it would be in a case probably

My mk acces gen 2 survives 2 weeks rio, with multiple cracker screen. Only ariving in the Netherlands, the weird climate gave IT moister water under de screen 🤦
I suppose the Series 2 no longer needs cases like this, although I'm still afraid of taking my Series 2 to the open sea.
Please tell me where u went snorkeling because I love snorkeling and I love to find new spots

Great review! I'm going with this not because I need the waterproof-Ness... Eh? But because I love the orange and gray color scheme it's available in! I wonder if they've fixed the screw? You'd think they'd put a stainless one on in the first place! :D

Yup the iffy bit is the screw. I have to admit using mine for years, when I unscrewed it to replace... my screws were a little rusty BUT the silicon and hard case kept my watch from being stained by any rust. :)

I can't believe they leave the face exposed entirely. I want watch case that will seal it entirely. Keep it safe from face scuffs or scratches or allowing any dirt, dust, mud, or debris to affect it whatsoever! I want to use a case like this for obstacle races, but be able to take it out and it still be like new after.

Hi Ray, actually we left enough space on the open face of the watch so you can install a flat screen protector if you want. The raised lip around the screen does a great job of protecting the screen from impacts. But you're right, if a rock or other sharp object hit the screen in the middle it could scratch it. I've used my apple watch rock climbing without getting any scratches on the face. The buckle did get some scratches though. :-p

Im curious. When removing the iwatch from the case, you need a lil bit of force to pop it out of the case. Does doing that can damage the back cover or the sensors inside?

I have been using this and I’ve had no problem with it. This is because the watch face slips into a silicon protector sleeve first before going into the rest of the screwed on case/ strap bit. :)

Hey, I work at a construction site, so i don't really need the waterproof, but i definitely need some high protection, i saw your review on the spigen tough armor and i'm not impressed with it, this might be a better option, but with no military grade screen protection it's still vulnerable. Are there any other cases that would help my situation?

SenZoy, Any flat screen protector can work with our Apple Watch case. Meaning the screen film cannot extend past the flat front surface of the glass. Actually the dust and dirt would be your biggest issue on the construction site. Since our Catalyst case for the Apple watch is 100% water and air tight, you will never have any dust touch your device. Most covered cases that have open holes ports for acoustics or buttons will allow dust and dirt in between the case and the apple watch which will significantly scratch the metal surfaces or glass over time. Our fully covered case will not only protect your touchscreen with it's raised rim, but it will also fully protect your device from dust and dirt.
There's just one thing I'm wondering about, 6.6 foot drop protection on a WATCH?!?!

+Reiland Eubank There is. I won't test it since the only time that I would drop the Apple Watch while I'm wearing it is if I fell with it.
Looks like a very high quality product but is not up for the job surfing with it. Apple watch started to malfunction while in the case. After opening it I noticed some moist inside and corrosion on the side button. Watch stopped working completely shortly after. A very strong DO NOT BUY unless you want to run the risk of replacing your apple watch. Customer service was very responsive but refused to cover the costs for the Apple watch repair

Water resistant. Just lets you wash your hands and maybe use it in the shower a couple times without getting worried. Don't take it past a few meters in a pool though and definitely not for long periods of time
My Apple Watch survives swimming in the Mediterranean Sea without a case!!!
