Make sure you only dip the needle in ink, and not the plastic tube as well, to avoid making a mess

A beginner. This helps to see only the needle goes into ink. I just couldn’t do shading and ink kept pooling because I overloaded pigment and dipped the plastic part in ink too!

I would hold the damn cartridge too long in the ink thinking I needed to suck up as much as possible so I could just lay my lines down uninterrupted, but I couldn’t get quality saturated lines, lots of clogging, mess.. etc. just a lil dip changed my life.

Okay, I was wondering how the hell you get the ink in. I was very confused at first since I'm new to a tattoo machine since I'm only familiar with hand poking. So this video was helpful, thanks.

So nobody is going to talk about if you dip it too deep and hit the plastic cup you can damage the needles and then you can cause more skin trauma because you just messed up the needle tips. 🤷🏽‍♂️

No, because I thought so too, but then I tested it under a microscope and other than a bit of dust, the damage done to the needle is not noticeable. I was honestly expecting the tips to bend and turn into micro-hooks, but it doesn't happen. You can check the video on my IG/TT and see for yourself.

Try a 5 or 7 round liner slow steady hand and run it at 7 or 7.5 bro. Hopefully you have better luck with this one. I somtimes dip my cartridge too far in the ink. I just dab the ink droplet on my paper towel and carry on lol no big deal

im not an expert mate, just learning aswell. but what type of machine are you using, coil or rotary? i use coil and i think running a single needle or a 3 at 8.5 volts is overkill. smaller needle groups like that cover a smaller surface area so they dont need as high of a voltage to penetrate the skin as a larger needle group would. you have to set your voltage by ear because different needle sizes require a different voltage and different machines kick in at a different voltage. make sure you learn how to set up your machine properlly before tattooing real skin, you dont want to fuck yourself up. theres some good channels on youtube that explain this well, look up Ben Fisher, Tattoo university and Erick Alayon, they all have good videos on this

ok but see how much ink fills when you dip the plastic tube and when only the needle itself. you have to do it 100 times as often.

Had this exact conversation on Instagram with someone and actually did an experiment. Using a single dip I managed to tattoo the phrase "believe in me" in cursive, but started running out of ink when I got to the letter m. I also managed to pull straight lines between 6-8 inches in length. Depending on the style and size of your tattoo, that's a pretty decent amount of ink to work with.
