This is very clever. Can you foresee any problems I might have if I worked backwards from the circle divided into 5ths?

It's perfectly fine to work from the 5 star to the calipers. It actually could be even more precise, when you first draw a circle, then divide it in 5 (trial and error with compass) draw a star and then there would be a smaller 5 sided polygon inside the star. You can make one side of this reversed polygon longer with a ruler and it will mark the golden ratio between two points of the star. I can send you a 2D CAD drawing, if you need it.
