The best kept secret among high-scoring MCAT testers and tutors is how we go through the passage. Some people call this "passage diagramming" or "passage mapping", but we call it the Flowchart Method. Join John as he teaches you his favorite strategy and shows you how to boil down any MCAT passage into its simplest and most useful components.

Thought I should share my story on another IFD video: I went from a 501 to a 511 with IFD's help. This is very solid advice!

I should say I was a Flowchart nonbeliever tried it on the first half of my B/B section then gave up because I felt like it wasn't working. For the first 30 questions (where I used the flow chart) I got none wrong and the passage where I gave up is exactly where it went down hill. The point is that they know what they're talking about wish I practiced with this earlier!!!

I’ve been studying for the MCAT for a month and a half now and will be testing on June 4. It is a very overwhelming test, but the videos on your channel are really helping me prepare by focusing on the correct information and ways of thinking through the passages. It’s also cool to see students from the area of the country which I live on KZread making this kind of content. Thanks for what you do!

I like this video! Can you go more in depth on the relationship aspect? I understand to an extent but how do I notice those when reading? I feel like I get overwhelmed when I read the passages and always miss key details/ relationships.

I recommend our sample test breakdown videos! We always flowchart our passages (especially BB) so it could be helpful to see it in action:-)

Hey John, thanks for the video. What time should we aim to finish the passage in, 3 minutes? Also I've seen you say to glance over graphs (notice axes and titles) and come back to it if they ask questions, but Maggie says to interpret it upon the first read-through in 20-30 seconds. Does it just depend on you personally, which method is better? Thanks again!

For science passages, I stick to about 3-3.5 minutes on the passage. As far as interpreting figures on the first read through, we recommend a quick, bare bones interpretation. Definitely start with axes, titles, and figure caption, then try to get the most obvious/relevant info out. You could spend a few minutes interpreting the figures but the most relevant info you can get in 20-30 seconds + coming back to it if a question asks about is the Goldilocks approach, and I think it’s what both of us like best:-)

Thank you for such informational video! I was wondering do you highlight as well as write the flowchart per scientific passage? Tried to highlight and write main ideas and it’s tricky at times. Not sure if I should focus more on flowchart or highlighting or incorporating both. Is there a short key for highlighting? Thank you!

I think there are shortcut keys but tbh I've always just written it all down. I find going back and forth between writing and highlighting to be a bit cumbersome. I just highlight on the channel bc it's much easier to see for you all!

My exam is next month on the 25th. I’ve been doing this and has helped me answer questions I’dotherwise not get corrwct. Any tips on improving my speed though? I realized upon going through my FL practice exam that had I had more time, I would have gotten a handful more correct on the ones I got wrong due to guessing from lack of time. I’m also a student and my current schedule really only allows me to fully dedicate Mondays and fridays to mcat prep With the remained of the week filled with work, school related stuff, shadowing and anki for mcat so I don’t forget memorized stuff

I'm so happy it's helping you get questions right you otherwise would've missed! The best tip I can give you isn't super "sexy". You've just got to do a ton of passages using this method and doing the drill I go over at the end of the video. For your unique scenario, try to do as many passages as possible on your "MCAT days" (although I'd probably be taking full-lengths on those days if I were you), and then on your other days, just try to squeeze in 1-2 passages. I know you're crazy busy so it'll be a stretch, but just think, if you practice and extra 15 minutes per day on those off days, that ends up being over an hour of dedicated flowchart practice at the end of the week! I hope this helps :)

Yep! All the science sections are much more digestible with the flowchart method. CARS requires a little different strategy, which you can check out on our Condense to Main Idea videos!

  • @brownboyaesthetics1260

Can you apply it to CARs just for the logic flow?

  • @InformingFutureDoctors

Great question! You can apply the same goal of trimming the fat and pulling out what's relevant, but for CARS you're looking for drastically different things. We have videos explaining what's important in the CARS section so check them out in our Strategies playlist!

Hey so I realized those things you mentioned we should be writing down are actually the things i highlight. So couldnt the highlights in my passage serve as my flowchart?

  • @InformingFutureDoctors

    @InformingFutureDoctors

    2 жыл бұрын

I am fine if you highlight the basic sciences, but I'd heavily recommend writing the relationships. The point of writing them is to organize them because the MCAT purposefully hides them and convolutes them. So highlighting their presentation of a relationship is like highlighting a trap!

For this method, do u recommend reading the questions of the passage first? Or doing the flowchart with the whole passage and then answering?

@@InformingFutureDoctors Can you please share when you do highlight....what is your method? Does it not take up time allotted to answer the passage? Also, have you ever summarized the content at the end of each passage? Is it a good strategy?
