MAKE HALO GREAT AGAIN! - Ray Gun Retrospective

Halo has been suffering an identity crisis for the last decade. In that crisis it left behind core aspects of the series that set it apart from the crowd, in favor of mechanics that turned it into just another first person shooter. Today, I'll be talking (perhaps too passionately) about why Sprint, and by extension, Enhanced Mobility, don't belong in Halo games ... but I'll also be discussing ways the fun of fast paced modern combat could be introduced to the series in a way that keeps the core formula intact.
This isn't a video game channel, I know. But I'm passionate about this for some reason and at the end of the day, that's why I made my channel in the first place. To talk about things I think are funny or to talk about things I care a lot about. I hope that at least a fraction of you gain something out of this, even if you're not into Halo.

  • @RobertSmith-ow5kf

    @RobertSmith-ow5kf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Joseph Stalin I never said sprint makes halo unfair, I am just saying that the quote perfectly describes halo. Now, the question of whether or not sprint and advanced movement belongs in halo is a different question. Much like ray gun, I full heartedly agree that for halo specifically these mechanics do not belong in the game. I am not going to say why as the video does an excellent job of explaining this already.

  • @petegfp5887

    @Joseph Stalin Sprint allows you to bail from the action after making a mistake. Movement is more meaningful when you don't have the ability to just press a button and take off. Theres a reason they still haven't added sprint to CS:GO. If they did, the play style would be totally different.

    This is what I’ve been saying about CoD Infinite Warfare for years. Maybe not for the multiplayer, but the campaign and the gameplay mechanics there would have done very well if it was straight up not labeled Call of Duty. Instead, it got review bombed and the reveal trailer is the most disliked video on KZread because people were justifiably tired of CoD being seated in the future, and all that game did was push harder in that direction.

    This is correct to some extent. Dark Souls 2 is a deviation from 1 and 3 is a deviation from 2 with callbacks to 1 and Bloodborne. Every Dark Souls game is rather unique, they re not even close to being afraid of experimenting with the mainline.

    @@jasonmarcus1683 its much more satisfying making it out alive by weaving and dodging around obstacles, timing aggressive moves perfect, looking straight down, turning a corner, popping a nade at your feet with no sheilds and jumping away just in time as the enemy pushes in, than it is to click the left stick, mash a button up a wall, and thrust away. The abilities not only make survivability easier, but also make chasing or predicting enemy movements frustrating, and timing grenades near impossible. Luck .. isnt fun or rewarding. At least not to me. I like earning my streaks. Am I the only one that stood up and clapped when Chris started talking about getting laser beamed by hyper accurate weapons? God that is my biggest issue. Halo 3 BR is king. Even Bungie understood this in Reach when they added bloom. As awful as bloom is it made since why it was there.

    See my problem is even now on Halo 3 PC on small maps like BlackOut? Guardian? Guess what? Youre going to get beamed across the map by what? A BR. No escaping it. Matter fact, bloom doesnt even allow you to be accurate at a long distance because the bullets are more inaccurate the bigger it is across a distance.

Finally started playing Halo 5 and it felt like a breath air of fresh air. I was able to move and counter. The multiplayer actually felt fun. Don't know why people would wax nostalgic about moving like a turtle piloting a hovercraft.

    As someone whos last halo game was 4, and that was my least played halo game, seeing Halo 5s multiplayer and all this shit actually makes my jaw drop at what they have done to this beloved franchise... I am at a loss for words and its honestly sad to see a formula that worked so well and was so fun to be essentially scrapped and replaced by something that is so common and found in almost every other mainstream shooter these days. god damn this is depressing, it honestly doesnt even look anything like halo anymore.

    343 did a poll 5 years ago during the launch of Halo 5 regarding sprint. 89% preferred sprint and 11% didn't like sprint. I grew up playing Halo without sprint. Once sprint came to reach, for me, there was nothing going back. I greatly prefer it with sprint. In Halo 2 and 3s multiplayer, the vast majority of gunfights feel like they boil down who got the jump on the other player with a battle rifle. Unless you have a power weapon your only real option in this situation is to turn around to shoot back, maybe chuck a grenade and sluggishly jump away hoping they miss or you can get behind cover. With sprint, you can actually react. You can move behind cover or to a vantage point, and get into a better position to actually get the kill. You will still most likely die, especially in 5 where your shields don't recover while sprinting. But you have a much better chance as opposed to just trying to slow jump away while your shields get dwindled down from a br you don't have time to react to. To each their own, I know this simple feature drastically changes the game and quite a few of you aren't as big of a fan of it as I am. At least Halo MCC has an active player base on both Xbox and PC, and there will be a custom games browser in infinite with the option to turn sprint off so hopefully there will be a population of player who can play without sprint

    When doom eternal came out some people were upset that it was "just an arena shooter" as if arena shooters were inherently icky lepers to be avoided. This hits the nail on the head tbh; I love some of the more recent fps( siege is one of my favorite games) but there's something about arena shooters that can't be replaced by anything else. Everyone who got to play the original halo trilogy with some friends knows this, there's just a level of fun there with the maps, the randon weapons and the sandbox aspect of the gamecan't be found anywhere else.

    Doom Eternal and Halo are completely different shooters. Constant, fast movement is paramount in Doom Eternal. Halo is about realistic skills like tactical decision making and aim. Doom Eternal has no reloading, low ammo capacity, no crouching, situational melee attacks, a small jump and double jump, you carry all of your weapons at all times, a long range extremely fast dash that makes Halo 5's thrust feel like nothing more than a camera trick, etc. etc. Why are you talking about Halo like it's the same kind of "arena shooter" than Doom Eternal is?
