Your message was very timely and thanks! Btw, if you like this Generative music technique, well, the new video that I'm almost finished editing will give you yet another powerful technique for creating generative ambient music. In this new video that will most likely be uploaded tomorrow, we get a similar result but we use a whole chain of MIDI FX. Thats so nice to hear! Tbh, I didn't even know follow actions could do this until it just "happened" one day. I wanted to explore Follow Actions bc I knew that Live 11 updated the section with extra features so I wanted to play around and learn more. I knew that part of Generative Music was to set conditions and allow for the computer to randomly select from a set of choices. So I had two ideas in my mind and then I sat down and the technique just went into full bloom! I'm glad I was able to share it with you all and I'd like to do another tutorial on it after I've had the chance to play around with it some more. Thanks for the continued support!!!

Thank you for the great comment! If you recently started Ableton only a few weeks ago and you were able to follow along when I recorded the audio and MIDI into their own Audio and MIDI tracks and didn't get confused, then you are certainly on your way to Ableton glory my friend! It appears you're ableton adventure is off to a great start, I'm sure this was meant for you!! I think you may also like my "Generative Ambient Music technique with MIDI FX" video I just uploaded as it gives a similar technique but using MIDI FX. You are on your way to greatness!!

YESSSSS!!! Such a powerful technique that almost never gets used. In fact, I think the Follow Actions panel is hidden by default. Ableton is just so damn nice!!! 🤟🏼😎🤓☺️🤤

I will be making another tut exploring a similar Generative music technique that involves MIDI fx. Homework: see if you can go crazy adding MIDI fx to achieve a similar result. Tbh, there very similar. However, I've found (for me) that the Follow Actions can allow you to customize the output greater to your personal needs. This is bc you can set the dual follow action controls to restrict it to what it will play next. for instance, if we're jammin in Dorian, the sound comes from the 6 and the b7. so if you prefer it every time it plays the 6 in the scale it play the next (the b7) then you can really hone in on the dorian mode feel. Tbh, I'm almost going to use follow actions more now bc this may give me even better results. in any event, always good to explore with as many options as possible. Sometimes great music just wants to come out one way on a particular day! sorry for the delay in responding my friend, Brilliant question!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

This is great,really interesting.i have used and understand the majority of the techniques here but it's the magical missing 5% and a great approach that's refreshing and new.just as an aside,I guess you are aware of Paulxstretch? If not you'll love it.keep up the good work.

Ahh yes, the magical missing 5%! I know what you mean... You can be working on something in Ableton and nothing sounds good or particularly interesting, and then all of a sudden you turn one knob or add something and then all of a sudden MAGIC happens and its like the music is coming to life. I actually didn't know the technique would work so well especially with just a simple sine wave which shows just how powerful these techniques can be. Or you could just use random and scale with a string of midi notes and an arpeggiator

yes sir! in fact, watch me do it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nIqBz5aCfseqepM.html . So you may ask, why do it here with follow actions? Well, the way I've come to now view it is you do it when you know after certain notes, you want to then hit other notes right afterward. So you'll set the probabilities in the follow actions to play the next clip with more probability when you know you want to (lets say) go to the b7 from the 6 if you're in dorian to capture that dorian feel. I don't use this technique all the time but its cool and fun. thanks for watching!!

I just have a single clip playing a single note, then use the "random" midi effect with a "scale" midi effect after it to have it spit out what notes I want instead of completely random ones. Whats more, you can then take the midi output of that track, link it to another midi track, then record the output as midi tracks.

Indeed interesting information, thank you for sharing this. Of course, there are several tutorials covering "follow actions" ( e.g. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mG2ovNabiamTcZs.html&ab_channel=dBsInstitute )and on how to create generative music in Ableton (it's not Eurorack, but still interesting possibilities). Be sure to connect a midi controller to Ableton in combination with VCV Rack or one of the synths: then you can go crazy in modular/generative music! ---- And yes, this IS fun ;)
