Forget about the DIY filter. The tank looks awesome. I just love hair grass in aquariums. Adding those rocks made it so cool.

If you happen to have everything on hand, this is pretty cool. If you have to buy everything, there are less expensive small cannister filters currently on the market.

Yes, I totally agree with you, But, My place is only a small town. I cant buy the little filter for my fishtank. For that reason, I have to reuse everything I can find near where I live, Sometimes DYIng something will be more expensive than what we can buy. but it really is not crucial because DIY is also my interest.

Great video. I've been thinking about how I want to design a canister filter for my betta's tank, and in my head I was going to put the submersible pump inside the aquarium itself and have the canister inline with the output. I'm going to redesign that with the pump inside the canister instead, as you did. This way there's much less in the aquarium itself, and it looks cleaner. Also, to those wondering about the power supply and voltage regulator (blue chip with the numbers), you could easily do this more simply with a 5v cellphone charger (no longer adjustable), or by using a pump with variable flow dial. They did this so they can adjust the flow rate manually by changing how much power the pump is given.

Thanks for your comment. This is the filter with small version from big filter of fish tank.Because I can't found the pump mini have the adjustment function . So, I have to use control voltage module.

This is a good idea if you want to taylor a filter to suit your particular needs. As for those internal filters others are talking about. The ones I had were always breaking down.

This was an awesome vid. There are many bones one could pick, and they are true: if this leaks, it'll siphon the tank... The silicon will crack over time, I could just buy another type of filter for cheaper, etc., But I don't think those, legitimate as they may be, were the point of the video. This diy project crosses my line of diminishing returns too, by far! I don't have the electrical items, the drill and bit, nor the knowledge OR TIME, just lying around to make this efficient for ME. Nor am I a diy fanatic. But for the masses of people who do, this sharing is a creative idea. The possibilities are limitless. Even an Applied Science teacher would love this! Regardless of purpose or choice, this was super interesting. Thank you.

Additionally, most of the small/nano filters that can be commercially obtained/"PNP", do not provide the quality of filtration which can be manipulated in a DIY construction like this. In a DIY project like this, we can control the amount and type of physical media, carbon/charcoal as well as biological media as we see fit. Just the ceramic pieces he used, compared to any small Tetra, Eheim, Fluval, Aqueon (etc.) Internal or External HOB filter, will provide EXPONENTIALLY greater supporting beneficial bacteria colonies. Again, depends on your purpose, ...and if you have the resources...and necessity is the mother of ingenuity, right? And see, people are sharing links now and have offered insight beyond the education of this video. We might not have agreed with this DIY project nor been inspired to replicate it, but it has indeed triggered growth in our aquarium hobby and a dialogue. Not only is that a "win", but further evidence of a brilliant and influential video. Cheers! Now I'm gonna change water and maintain all my store bought filters haha. And maybe one day look back to this vid for inspiration. "Over and Out."

Been building DIY aquarium safe filters and accessories for 38 years now. Hot Glue doesn't get brittle and if done correctly doesn't leak either. Give this guy his chops, he just built a mini canister which you can't buy in this size for less than an Azoo turtle canister. and it has adjustable speed on the motor. So show me a canister filter with a brushless DC pump motor with variable speed?

I don't care about companies, I care about experience. I used Red Devil brand 100% silicone (just make sure it doesn't have mold and mildew inhibitors) to seal all of my tanks, and they're doing fine for a couple of years now and not killing anything to the best of my experience. Just because someone recommends something over the internet/youtube because they had good experience with it doesn't mean it's the only product that will work.

Anyone know where I can get one in the US? I'm modifying this project into a nano tank chiller using a spare Ice Probe I have. There isn't any room for it in my tank so an external solution is the only choice.

shouldn't the water pump sit at the bottom on the container so it actually sucks the water down to the bottom where the media is? This set up looks like the water goes from the tank to the top of the container then back out. It doesn't seem like it pulls water through the media. Someone let me know if I'm wrong because I also plan on making one
