Make and Paint Your Own Limewash!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
How to mix and apply your own limewash paint with only 3 simple ingredients!
Want to try your hand at achieving a stylish, modern/contemporary interior wall finish that designers and decorators can’t get enough of? Look no further! Limewash paint (though technically extremely old) is making a major comeback. Don’t believe us? Open any social media app. and scroll for a few minutes. You can’t miss it.
The only problem is, limewash can be extremely difficult to get your hands on. Trust us, we tried. That’s why instead of throwing in the towel, we decided to make our own- with the help of our good friends at DAP and their Hydrated Lime Powder! Luckily, you can too with a few simple ingredients that are easily attainable. Oh, and don’t worry about this being too difficult, or technical. We’re doing this ‘Refresh’ style. You won’t need a PHD in chemistry to achieve this look 🤓.
The only things you’ll need to make your own DIY limewash paint are as follows: Hydrated Lime powder, pigment (for color), and Alum salts (to bind the lime and pigment). That’s it. Really. It’s as easy as that.
Think you’ll give it a go? We’d love to know how it turns out, so please let us know in the comments below!

Honestly you saved my a bunch of money... I tried to purchase another brand from home depot and the container broke during delivery. Then months later i saw this video. Limewash can be made by mixing regular hydrated lime water and salt. Lime/water mixed at 20/80% and pay $20 instead of $300...😂 i didnt use pigment so i skipped the alum salts. This worked very well on an old brick house from the 40's
Okay, so I’ve been limewash/limeplaster obsessed for two years. Seriously I love the look of old French country and wanted something that also deterred bugs. I tadalaket my bathroom even… BUT…! If you have kids or a farm… eh… this isn’t a good choice. You can’t wash your walls. It’s hard to upkeep because of that. I honestly just ended up buying scrubbable eggshell white paint, adding strong coffee to it and then using that as a lime-ish look and it’s soooo much better.

You can add tallow to make it washable/waterproof . Coffee grounds will eventually get moldy…
Can it be used over paint? I'm looking for a heakthier alternative to a fresh coat of paint.
Can this used on Sheetrock ?
What level of drywall should the thing be muddled to before hand if im doing brand new ceiling drywall!

You’re going to want it almost perfect. Same as you’d want for paint.
I love the look. Can I use it on drywall, and is there a way to seal it?

Vaspari makes a primer that can go over common "latex" paint. It's a proprietary mix of probably lime, acrylic as a binder, and silica as a filler. You can limewash over that primer.
Is Alum Salts actually Posassium Alum? Because I am in Germany trying to do the language thing! 😵💫
I noticed the lime wash is kind of fragile, in other words, it scratch easy, do you know if there is a component to add to make thew lime wash stronger to scratch? I tried sealer used for imperial plaster instead to mix with water the lime wash and it's better but still not enough. Thank you in advance for your answer!

you can add a sealer to it. (A matte sealer would look best)

Skim milk. The casein in the milk has a chemical reaction with the lime to form a strong binder
I’ve tried this and it keeps coming out a lot lighter in color, not sure how to remedy this

The use the same thing when naturally dying with plants to fabric! I've used Alum many times, but you should definitely being doing it with a mask and ventilated. It's not safe to breath in.
Which pigments did you use

They used black diamond from Amazon, I'm not sure if it's a good choice for limewash since it's mica which is sparkly.
What kind of primer did you use?

Any primer should work just fine 👍
🎉
How many grams of pigment per sachet? And how many grams of salt did you use? thanks!

We can’t remember (re. grams/sachet) exactly- but we ended up using a ton of pigment, and not getting exactly the colour we expected to. Our advice would be to get much more pigment than you think you’ll need and do a lot of testing to make sure you like the color before applying it to the wall. We added roughly the same amount of alum salt as we did pigment, but it was far from an exact science (things usually aren’t, for us 😂). You can find more exactly recipes online if you look a little, but we found its relatively fool proof 👍

Thanks for not overcomplicating it 😊just what I need
Hilarious😂🤣
Am I hearing this correctly or am I not hearing this correctly?? Four parts lime powder to one part water... In what world would that ratio create a watery paint and not a chunky pile of slightly damp like powder??
😂😂😂
Just get on with it. Don’t try to be funny bc u r not funny
