I wanted to give my laptop a whole new look, so I gave my PC a makeover! Steampunk was my inspiration for this, and I tried to make it as elegant and antique-looking as I could. Thank you so much for watching, and don't forget to subscribe for more awesome creative projects!
The end result of the computer probably does not qualify as steampunk, but it's inspired by all those awesome steampunk things out there. It's more like a rustic, wooden laptop with gold parts.
Material list:
2 rolls of vinyl - 8 $ each
2 metal pipes - 3$ each
Two component epoxy glue - 10$
Gold paint
Clear coat spray - 8$
Music:
Main song:
Artist: Approaching Nirvana

Outro song:

To all the people asking how to see the keyboard: The keys are still visible, they are extruded on they keyboard! If you don't want to do this step, that's not a problem, because it needs some guts and patience :)

Jak Lounds they use scissor switches which are deliberately made easy to take off so you can buy new aftermarket keys if yours gets bent/broken etc, they even use metal rods in parts like the tab and spacebar keys, one exception I would make is the new apple macbook and air line up as they have flush keys which could be tricky to put back in.

not only guts and patience, but careful planning and BRAINS to analyze why this should be done. even if it's extruded, it won't be that helpful. what i can suggest is take a picture first of the signs/symbols then apply letter transfers. then apply a fixative if this will prove effective. or you can paint on it with a good trusty small brush tip then apply a coating of clear lacquer/fixative.. (be sure this type won't damage the plastic as other brands melts plastics, probably model kit grades are safe i.e. tamiya) . (sakura brush .001 or whatever) some keyboards have double symbols or functions and it will be troublesome even for people who used to type. liked your video. keep up the work

True story: years ago after watching the movie Hackers (Were we ever so young?) I spray-painted my old PS2 keyboard. I then spent the next 4 years having every friend who didn't know how to touch type draw back in horror after reaching to type something on my computer, because I never bothered to mark the keys. The moral of the story: Do what you like with your hardware. It's yours.

The epic awesome movie Hackers came out in 1995, its not years ago anymore, its officially decades ago... How old do we feel now? :) I would have used a gold candy paint that is transluscent for the gold effect but should still have visible key markings under it.

I don't know why some people are dogging this. I think it is creative, and the vinyl wood pattern turned out really well, the gold pipe on the edge is a small detail but it adds to the look. Sure, painting the keyboard gold might have been a step too far, but it's all personal preference. Would I have done it? No. But that's because I use a few keyboards a day and I can't remember the layouts by feel for all of them. This is what she wanted, and she took her time and the painted keys turned out well, this laptop will be used by her daily so she is bound to know the layout by feel. Maybe she can do a part two where she paints the numbers, letters and symbols back on in a different font style to give it more appeal to someone that won't be using it all the time.

Matt Olstad theres no need to paint the assigned keys. I have the same laptop and the letters and numbers are actually raised so you can still see and feel them. She isnt going in blind. Even on a bad eyesight day she will be able to see the letters

That's pretty cool. Super nerds don't really need to see what the keys are as they can touch type. Back in the day I stuck smiley face stickers onto each key of my computer so that my brother wouldn't constantly be on it. It solved the issue right away :D

Looks great, did this to a few of my laptops. Some tips on applying vinyl. Spray some soapy water on the surface before laying the Vinyl down and then squeegee the air bubbles out. The layer of soapy water will let you slide the vinyl in place and get rid of the bubbles before the adhesive dries. Also, you can use a hair dryer to soften the Vinyl so it moulds better around corners.
