For a first go at it, that yo yo is super responsive, as far as I can tell. You've convinced me to try and make my own. Great work by the way.

I used my Axminster AWVSWL1200( it's the same as the Laguna 1847). A great lathe although quite expensive for a beginner! I would suggest starting out with a "Mini Lathe", that is what I did and it served me well. Most models will be fine. Good luck, Alex.

My mom, who is in her early 70's now, was a real whiz with a yo-yo when she was a kid. Maybe I will make her one out of a nice piece of something pretty. Thanks for the idea of the screw chuck, Alex.

I use a 3" hole saw to cut blanks for yoyos. I then put both halves on the pen mandrel with a washer in the middle. This makes it so the shaft goes all the way through, but I like the fact that I can see both halves at the same time to make sure they look the same. I use a popsicle stick for the spacing of the string. I want to try to make one with a ball bearing next. Great first Yo Yo. I love the small simple projects that are good for my beginning students. (pen, top, yo yo, wand)

If you adjust where one half of the yoyo sits on the axle, there seems to be no way to ensure the rod will be in as far on one side as on the other, if that makes sense. I'm not sure if it would be enough to throw it off balance or not. I suppose you could measure it out before sticking the axle in. This video is very inspirational, I plan to use the biggest hole saw we have, use the positive parts of the cuts, and just deal with having a hole all the way through in the center. I can plug the ends of the holes on the outside with wood and sand them, maybe? Btw, I bet reenactors would love these. They're always looking for a period accurate way to have fun. Thanks!

Have you ever tried to make the tops of 1960 era. They were wood but had a hard nylon point to turn on, you wound them up by starting the string at the smallest diameter and kept winding up until you ran out of string. You also threw it something like a yo-yo but with a timed flick of the wrist to send it through the air with the small point down so that it would land on it and continue to spin.
