It’s a refreshing change to listen to an American presenter, who uses what you’ve got on hand! The explanation of how to use the matting was easy & simple to understand, even for a new to have a go gardener! My sincere thanks 😊🤞

Thank you! 😃 I think you're right, sometimes KZreadrs tend to present "new and shiny", when really, we could take a look at what already have first! My channel is all about keeping things real. Thanks for watching!

If you don't want to pay for capillary mat there are actually lots of fabrics that work. If the fabric is thick enough and absorbs water it will work. Fabrics like car washing dollar store cloths, cotton jogging fleece fabric and such also work. To test the fabric just dip one end in some water and wait to see if the fabric not in the water becomes wet as it wicks from the container over a bit of time.

I have some of the Gardeners Supply trays too and they are great , but I agree on the flexibility for mixed seeds in one tray. Did not know you could get the mat alone to make your own - great idea! I have the same raised cookie racks, so may do it the same way you did. Love your videos - you are very relatable - good luck building your channel following - I look forward to seeing more from you!

This is a late comment, but this video was very helpful as I was wondering how to go out of town during the seedling season. I did some more research after watching your video and realized I can use old wool blankets, which I already have, as capillary mats.

That Covid baking kick finally paying off. Dragged the cooling racks out of storage and now using them in an auto-waterer. I have them set up in storage boxes with heating mats and growlights. One thing to watch for is leaving it so long that the tap roots have grown directly into the capillary matting.

Just use some empty plastic containers like for yogurt or sour cream(wider the better), and cut them to size....all you need is 5 ....two on each side and one in the middle.

Hello I made mine using tray and wired tray with pvc pipe inbetween to add strenght. I added my capillary mat but didn't cut the edge of the wired tray. Instead, I simply cut 2 strips of capillary mat that I put at 1/3and 2/3 in-between the wire and the mat and let them tangle in the reservoir...these strips suck the water and soak the mat. Very easy and clean.

Thanks so much for the video. I reuse all kinds of things too, such as the clear salad/lettuce boxes are my go to for sowing seeds; one nested in the other with the top one perforated to drink the water from the one below. I got the wicking fabric this year b/c we are going away for 4 days and I don't want to rely on someone to under or overwater the seedlings. I can do that by myself. ;) But I was trying to figure out how tall or how far out of the water to prop the fabric holder. This is very helpful video, I know it's old video but any thoughts on how many days you can get away if you have an inch of water?

  • @HarmonyHillsHomeandGarden

It's been a while since I used this method, but if I remember correctly, an inch of water lasts 4-5 days. Good luck!

Hi Jenny great video, just setting this up as going on holiday, problem brought mats from wilko about 15x 10 inches 5 mats, I will have to put one partly in the water underlapping? Or overlapping? The next mat, that is the question 😮

Great ideas for using what you've got! How much water do you put in your trays (to the top?) and how long does it last? I'm going to be away for 9 days and don't want my seedlings to die! :-)

Each tray holds about 1/2 gallon of water. it takes up to a week for them to dry out, while the seedlings are all young yet.

:-) Your idea might work great! I understand that craft store felt, or old woolen sweaters both would work for the wicking mat. Or 100% cotton, I think. Good luck!

Honestly I don't recall -this was a couple years ago. If memory serves, I filled the tray full for a 3-day period. But if your plants are larger with more roots, they'll take up more water, etc.
