Make a Root Cellar - Part I

In this video, the founder of Aanandaa Permaculture Project, Manisha Lath Gupta shares her experience of making a root cellar as a part of her sustainable house. Root cellars are popular in western countries with temperate climates. When the external temperature is below freezing, a root cellar provides the perfect weather to store produce to tide over the winter months. With high humidity levels, these cellars created a refrigerator-like environment for storage.
However, in tropical and sub tropical climates like where Aanandaa is located, a root cellar behaves quite differently. IT helps to create an ambient temperature which is more stable, and does not fluctuate as much as the external atmospheric temperature.
A root cellar can be lit or dark. In our cellar we have one section which is dry & lit, while the other is dark & humid. Both sections serve different purposes and help to store different types of harvests. While the dry & lit section is good for grains, cereals, pulses and onions/garlic, the dark is important for root crops, vegetables, and fruits. Also jams, pickles, preserves and chutneys are stored in this environment.

    Wonderful! I love the earth floors. In North America, they are either concrete (awful) or pebble stones (yay, but not practical for cleaning). Earth floors and the way they can be dampened if needed is a wonderful idea. Earth bricks are often used to naturally give cheeses a consistent humidity. They absorb excess moisture, and they release moisture into the air if it's dry. I can't wait for the next episodes on this topic. Thank you!

    @@farmaanandaa Manisha, you need to eat a little more of that awesome food that you are growing; I hate to sound like your mommy but you need to eat up girl! 🙂 On a serious note, I hope you have done some solid termite control during and post construction, and have it as a planned/scheduled annual (pre-monsoon) activity. Them termite are great in your homestead but equally nasty in/around your home. And I don't believe they sell insurance for that kinda stuff in India. And thanks for making some English content after a while.

    @74osho hehe I am probably at my heaviest these days. It's the wretched heat that makes me look malnourished. When you build with lime you get the dual advantage of long lasting construction and termite treatment. So no worries on that account

    I have been considering an A/C room cellar which could also maintain a constant temperature throughout the year. Would be cost effective with fully renewable energy self sufficiency.

    Thanks a lot Manishaji for wonderful and very informative video. You had mentioned that North East corner is cooler and so you chose to make cellar in that direction. Can you throw some more light as to how it is more cooler and convinient than other directions? Also, the North East corner is also the North East of your farm? Or is it North East of your house?

    Its the northeast of the house. Sun shines from the south side through most of the day, and then becomes really strong during the afternoon when it is in the west. That is how the north east corner is usually coolest.

    I recently watched some videos by Anita Lath Ji, and I must say, that her understanding of the subject is truly commendable and insightful. Thank you for shedding light on the benefits of lime and stone construction in building a cellar. You also highlighted the importance of considering temperature fluctuations, air circulation, and moisture in storage practices.👏🏻👏🏻 I do have a few suggestions that may be of help: 1) The sound quality in the video was quite poor (captions helped me, but not everyone would use them). 2) Given that Chandigarh is located in seismic zone 4, making it highly prone to earthquakes, it's essential to have protective measures in place to prevent jars from falling and breaking during tremors. This can potentially prevent the loss of essential supplies. 3) Some items, such as open-pollinated seeds, and others on your selling portal seem to be highly-priced. I would kindly request periodic price rationalization so that more people can benefit from your offerings, Anita Ji. Wishing you all the best and looking forward to seeing more of your knowledge and expertise being shared with people in any way possible! ✌🏼
