Make a Pant Sloper from a Skirt Sloper!
Making a pant sloper can be quite complicated, but if you’ve already made your skirt sloper, then you’re halfway there! A sloper is a basic pattern block that is used to create any other style and in this video, I’ll show you how to turn a skirt sloper into a pant sloper, then how to draft an angled pocket, and how to sew up the pants with a pocket opening-no elastic waist and no zipper!

Yes please let's do a bodice sloper now!
This closure seems not just easier than a zipper, but more comfortable, smoother, and more adjustable. Another great video. Others say this all the time, but I’ve been making garments for 62 years and I learn things every time I watch you. Thank you!
I’m in for the bodice sloper! This pant sloper was easy to understand. A great way to make a pair of dress pants with no zipper. Also love the waistband treatment using the selvage.

Looking forward to the bodice tutorial.
I used to have pants and skirts with a pocket opening 40 years ago, and it's so comfortable! Thank you Catherine for bringing them back to life, this sloper with that opening is definitely my next project❤
I can’t watch enough about pattern drafting. Thanks so much for adding to my knowledge base! ❤
You are such a good instructor. I hope your students know how lucky they are to have you as their teacher. I haven't made a sloper yet, but it is on my to do list. Thank you.
I just rewatched the video from 9 months ago. Now I see it's easy-peasy! I bought a similar material last fall and I've been stalling on using it. I have found the right pattern here and I'm going to make it myself. Thank you Catherine, so much!!! ❤
Hi Catherine, I finally found the greatest V neck T Shirt that was shaped for the Body. Vintage of course! No gaping at the back neck or bunching under the arms. It has four seams! Two side seams and one in the middle and back of the bodice. Challenge to use this process of body shaping on a loose fitted T Shirt! Love You!
Love your new pants, especially the salvage trim! So cute and versatile, too! I really enjoyed learning to make the pant sloper! You are a gifted teacher!! Thank you!🌹
I love the sound of sharp scissors cutting fabric!
Slopers are game changers! I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone sewist who is frustrated at spending a fortune on ill-fitting commercial patterns 👍
You have a new fan…. My kitten became fascinated watching your video with me.😊
Your lighting is fine, I am able to see what you are doing. This is fascinating knowledge. I appreciate you sharing your experience.
I would love a bodice sloper! I've been trying but haven't had much success on my own. Adding ease is my issue. I look for your newest video every day. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us!
gee woman, you know your stuff! what a ride! thank you! now I know what to aspire to!
This is the best and easiest to understand video on making a sloper that I’ve watched. It’s been years, decades, since I made any clothes. I was charting a pant pattern and needed help. I was just about ready to make a pair of trousers out of an old sheet that had seem better days. Thank you. I have more confidence now. The outfits that I made 25 years ago are so well made. Cheers.
Congrats on 90K, sister! Woooooot!

I absolutely love your videos because you actually show the process of drafting and sewing. It really helps.i remember having a pair of pants with the side opening. I have forgotten all about that…such a great idea. I’m in LOVE with selvedge idea to the front, So so cute. You are so clever. I would live to take a class from you
Wow, Catherine I sure learned a lot today. Never heard of a sloper(my spell check didn't either) LOL I loved my dress pants back many years ago with that kind of opening, so nice, neat and comfy. And the pattern making was so interesting and you did a wonderful job of explaining it. I'm never too old to learn. (71) Thank you
I love the opening of the trousers hiding in the pocket. I think I have a thrifted 1950's pajamas pattern that does this technique.
Catherine, I adore how beautifully you explained this pants sloper. I’ve always had problems understanding how to make a sloper from written directions only. You made this so darned simple! ❤
I so wished I had had a sewing teacher like you at school, instead I made loads of mistakes at home - thankfully on old sheets and fabric donated to me from family. My great grandmother was a tailoress and my great great Uncle worked on Saville Row which is, I think, where my love of fabric and sewing comes from. Unfortunately they were both well past showing an enthusiastic teenager what to do, but I make do and now learn the proper way to do it from you, thank you
I recall doing that pocket closure on a pair of pants on a pattern from the 60's. a great alternative to a zipper/button opening! Actually I think I still have that pattern..... haha Thanks for a great video - wonderful to see how to make a pair of pants from a skirt.
The pants turned out great! You are so good at what you do and make everything look so easy thanks!
An elastic waist pants sloper would be very useful for me.
This was great! Yes! A bodice sloper would be excellent!
❤❤❤ this so much. From start to finish, just fantastic. I’ve been searching for this very thing and you have provided. Thank you.
I used to have a pair of pants with that pocket opening. I really liked that pair because it made getting in and out of it an easy job. No zipper to fuss with. A top sloper would be nice.❤
Amazing video and tutorial Catherine! You empower people and I feel able to do all the things from this video. Next... draft my skirt sloper to then try my first pants! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Yes, please, let's do a bodice sloper! ❤
You are such a treasure trove of ideas. Thanks. I should consult my Helen Joseph's book more.
You are a great teacher. I really love the way you show and explain everything.
Absolutely do a bodice sloper, thank you for a great video again Catherine. Take care from the UK x
Thanks! This was excellent. You simplify everything. Of course, a top sloper tutorial would be welcomed.
I just helped my student make these pants using a vintage 80’s vogue pattern. She added some style lines down the front and back and went for a deconstructed look. They are so cute.
Hahahaha, I have that book as well, I should be all set. My problem is fitting myself. I can do this very well for other people, but have a problem when it comes to myself. I’ve learned a lot from you.
A bodice sloper would be great. Thanks.
I have a pair of high quality summer pants I bought 3 years ago from MAX [Australia) and they open like that. With a bit of tweaking, they are a good way to make size-flexible pants. I also have a couple vintage skirts with the same closure and I’ve started using making all my skirts using a similar side closure where the fabric wraps over the pocket and hides it. It’s so much easier to make than a traditional skirt!

I just watched the bodice sloper video and loved it. Can’t wait to try this one. And- awesome pocket reinforcement and zipless opening!! You’re so good about teaching new skills!🥰
I have owned both pants and skirts with that type of opening. Your pants look comfortable and good on you. Thank you.
Thank you for this. And you make it look like something that I could do. I love the zipperless opening. I forgot there was such an opening.
Yay, my Monday Catherine fix. And it just happens that I found the skirt sloper video over the past weekend. Ps. I just remembered - I have a pattern with those exact pocket style.

Would you mind sharing the pattern name and number if it’s convenient? I would love to try sewing up a pair of pants like these but I’m a beginner so making a sloper and my own pattern adds another layer of complexity. Thank you in advance! 😊
I have already made skirt sloper so I will try the pant sloper too. Yes please for a bodice sloper.
Very good tutorial on making a pants slopper. Thank you.
Awesome job! I love the pocket closure. I may have to try a pant sloper. Thank you for this wonderful instructional video.
Love the pants! I have had pants with that side pocket opening and like them a lot! You are right though, I don’t see them very often now.
Catherine... are you a mind reader? You blow my mind girl... I have just made a Sloper for pants (the master is still on my cutting board) using the directions from a book I have had for a number of years (Make your own patterns - Rene Bergh). My goal has been to re-create a pattern with my measurements for pants with the 'pocket' opening like a pair of pants I still have (but can no longer wear). Thank you for all the special details for this pocket opening. My saved pants are made of a crepe fabric with a front pleat instead of a dart. They were such a favorite because the fit was so comfortable, and the drape of the fabric was so flattering. I can't wait to move on with this. Your pants are lovely. (I ran into you on another site one day a while back. I do follow you and your incredible garment creations.) LOL... I just went to my closet, grabbed those pants... and I can still get them on. I am stunned. Time has changed my waistline but this particular pair of pants has a little elastic in the back so there is 'forgiveness' for the years.
Oh my goodness! Those are ADORABLE! I LOVE THEM! AND I already have the PERFECT fabric for a pair of my own! 😊 heh heh heh! It was meant to be!
Careful, your long experience and expertise is showing! 😉😊

Wow ty for sharing, So many advanced techniques. Yes I'd love to see the bodice sloper.
Catherine, this was awesome! I made a skirt one time with that type of opening. I loved it. Going back to make a skirt sloper & then on to pants. Yay! And yes on the bodice sloper.
I just finished making my skirt sloper. The instructions were very easy to follow. I also have a pattern making book that makes me tired trying to read it. lol. I look forward to making my pants sloper next and comparing it to another one I made months ago.
Yes bodice sloper! And explanation of how to use it
Love the pants! You really are a great teacher!
Yes please I would love to see a bodice sloper. Thanks for a great video!
This looks so incredibly easy! And it’s much easier to draft and fit a skirt sloper than a pants sloper. My favorite non-zipper or elastic waist pants pattern is by Stretch and Sew. It’s their Comfort Pants pattern and they use this same method. I never knew how they did it, and you’ve shown me.
Yes would love to learn how to do a bodice. The pants are so cute.
As a beginner I find this process so fascinating. I think I’ll watch it again. Thanks for another great video Catherine. ❤
I love it!! I have just been on the verge of asking for a pant sloper. I can hardly wait for a bodice sloper. Obviously, I am not an average size in many ways and have always been intimidated at the idea of altering patterns. Thanks so much. chris
Love, love this. Skirt sloped and pants sloper in my queue. Bodice sloper would be great. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
I already cut out slacks with the intention to do a pocket closure! So I'm glad you did this video so I can review the technique. I used to make all my skirts and pants this way many years ago. Tired of the front fly.
Some excellent tipa and tricks clearly explained as ever! Thank you!
I like the idea of the open pocket. Haven‘t seen that one yet. Will definitely try though.
Hi Catherine, yes please to a top sloper. Could you include bust adjustments - I’m a 32 G (I blame my mother🙃) and it’s virtually impossible to get a nice fit. I really appreciate your clear, simplified videos. Many thanks 💕
So great! You make it so easy to follow! And now I just have to find time to sit down and d it ! Love your channel
Thanks for this, I love your videos. I'd love the bodice sloper tutorial. I would also like something in depth about this pocket in this, I have never seen that before and struggling to understand how it works. Thankyou x
Oh my god...what a great idea! Needed that for a pant pattern that i want...
Jean from Canterbury England loved the video more please
Excellence education. Explained very well ❤. Yes for bodice sloper
Thank you so much for sharing the info on making a pants sloper, I have had a horrible time finding a pattern that fits in pants, I feel I have spent a small fortune only to be disappointed by commercial patterns and the fit. I will definitely be trying this idea! And yes please on the bodice sloper😊
These look great. I love the use of the selvage in the waistband. I would also use the selvage on the hems of the pant legs. Either with the selvage at the very bottom or as part of the hem seam like you've done at the waist band.
Wow, that seemed easy enough. The closure is amazing. When you don't want elastic but also don't want to do a zipper. I like it a lot. Thanks for teaching us so many new tricks and tips each week.
Great tutorial, good editing, so very accessible
Yes, please on the bodice sloper! Please!

Yes, please, for the bodice sloper. I have tried soooo many times before and failed miserably, lol
that pant opening was cool, gotta try it!
Thank you thank you. I will use this information often !
Love this video. So much good stuff Really like the opening and such a good way of doing a pair of pants. Now i have to go and do the skirt sloper as the first thing. And yes definitely do a bodice sloper!!! Thank you!

Cute pants. I had a pair of pants with the same opening and I think a skirt, that was a long time ago. I would love to see you do a bodice sloppier.
Loved this pair of pant; could you make the next one in a lighter color. And I would love to see the blouse sloper. Love your program; I get so much out of it.

Very impressive, but not surprised, that you usedba Sharpie to draw all the lines and didn't mess up any! I would have had scratchouts all over the place! You are so talented and an excellent teacher!
Hi Catherine I've wanted to make a sloper for skirt and pants and bodice for years and you are an awesome teacher! But I find this so daunting. I'm posting my sadness here in case there are others who find it a bit much as it seems everyone "gets it" so quickly. If I was in a class with you I'm sure you'd be able to coach me as I'm not sure why I'm so challenged with this. Maybe you have had students like this? If so, why does it overwhelm me? Weaving I can do...sewing....just can't seem to manage ...and it is better for me to know how to sew :).
WOW! I learned a lot! Thanks ❤
One of my favorite pair light wool lined dress pants had this type of opening. I still have them though they are too small. Wish I could upsize them somehow.
Love this!
really impressive methods thanks

Another great video. You are a gift to us, Catherine. You think of everything (double tack where the pocket meets the pants, for example) and I always learn so much every time. Pants are on my wish list now! I also love your choice of fabric every time, and this one is no exception. May I ask where you bought it?
