Make a Nickel Iron Battery or Edison battery

Ғылым және технология

Here you can at home make a Nickel Iron battery or better known like Edison battery.
The Nickel Iron battery is made from nickel oxyhdroxide as active material on nickel foam current collector. The negative electrode is made from iron or iron powder as active material on iron plate or on stainless steel.
NOTE: Is better to use nickel oxyhydroxide from Nickel-metal hydride batteries for better performance. And also to make nickel oxyhydroxide at home can be difficult and you will not end up with good performance!
The electrolyte is 6 mol KOH

Nickel iron batteries would be great for powering homes. it doesn't matter that they would be large,as they would be static and could be in a shed or even in the ground. There are nickel iron batteries that are 100 yrs old and still more than 80%.. they are also relatively very green. Thanks for a very clear and concise video.

if the reduction potential of iron 2 to iron is minus 0.44 then would the reverse, the oxidation (iron to iron ii as in this case) potential be plus 0.44?

hi cayrex2, many videos I've watched on your channel, but I'm still confused, what batteries are easily made with material that is easily obtainable as well and is equivalent to lead acid battery mf on your sample video?

Yes I have many videos, because many people want to watch on diffrend types of batteries. Easy to make and have the performance of the lead acid battery? This depends what is for you easy. Some ZnHCF battery, zinc ion hybride capacitor, nickel zinc, iron air battery,.... you have many tech that can be better that lead acid battery

@@cayrex can you tell me what the binding agent you have used with the iron powder please?

  • @cayrex

    @cayrex

    4 жыл бұрын

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 in basic you can use what do you want for the binding agent. SBR + CMC, PVA + PVP I use the second binder. 85 to 90% active material (iron powder) 5 to 10% conductive material and around 5 % of binder (3%PVA and 2% PVP) If you use a binder which is waterproof then also use some binder which will be water based binder like CMC or PVP with the combination of waterproof binder. In this system the electrolyte will easy to get into the active material. You can also try only PVA or other waterproof binder but you will need much more time for electrolyte to soak into the active material.

@@cayrex thanks for your reply, and the info. I've been looking for details on the construction of early Edison batteries for a while, how it was done in the 1930's as some 90 year old batteries are still in usable condition. Have you ever tried the tube type construction with the iron powder packed into the tube? If I do anything on my channel I'd like to mention you and show a couple of clips from your videos if that's ok.

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 tube design is also really good. In this case you need a iron tubes. On this iron tubes you make a small holes that the electrolyte can go inside the tube. But the iron tube you can fill with iron powder to get more capacity. Wow,... mention me on your channel? This is so cool

You can also just some some pieces of nickel for the positive and iron or zinc for the negative. it works. I got 260mA of current briefly out of a tiny piece only a inch or so long dipped into a container spaced apart and like 8mm wide at about 1.2 to 1.8 volts depending on if iron or zinc is used. You can even use two pieces of nickel instead of one nickel and one iron. that also works. Only need to repeatedly charge and discharge the nickel oxide layers dozens to a hundred or so times to gradually build up the layers You can even used alternative electrolyte of potassium carbonate instead! it just doesn't have as much capacity.

Hey brother, do you want to help fight the great reset by joining our open source hardware production? We need to produce NiFe in a small scale workshop, the method needs to be documentable and made as simple as possible for reproduction by a lay person. Wiki documents, video's, drawings and BOM/Sourcing information must be put together, marketed and put into an enterprise format so it can be reproduced quickly around the world, freely by individuals and small communities. It's either that or transhumanist hell on earth awaits us all!

Wow, very interesting. I am here because God gave me a dream of a nickel battery, that was not something I had heard of before, my husband laughed that I didn't know but the point was my dream was from God on something he showed me, proving God does this. This is my second battery related dream. That said, I want to encourage you, trust in the Lord. If you want to know the best way to plan for hard times, it's to read scripture, pray, and LISTEN to God's direction with a pure heart able to hear when others can't. God is real, God is only good, whatever battle your privy to, it's spiritual. Be spiritually ready. Stay on God's side no matter what and God will bless you as you do his will. I know the main need for batteries/energy in my dreams is spiritual connection to God. I wanted to share that. You sound like you have a very pure heart. Read John 3:16 & 17

Sir, you didn't make a nickel-iron battery in this video. You just took a positive electrode from an already-existing NiMH battery, and stuck it in some KOH opposite a bunch of iron powder, and ran it for 12 minutes. All you did was discharge an already-charged cathode against a glob of iron powder. You didn't make your (+) electrode, you didn't properly make the (-) paste either, and you didn't recharge your own 'battery', at least not here. It would be great if you could show everyone how to make an Edison battery! (which is the title to your video)
