Hey Grant I am trying to get back into Blender after a year hiatus... more tutorials like this on basic modelling are always good for me!

I really enjoyed this tutorial. Thanks Grant! It was perfect for a relative newcomer to Blender with some familiarity with the interface and Object and Edit modes. I was able to follow along pretty well and completed what I’ll call Barrel 1, which is one mesh object with two materials applied to it. It’s nice to work on a short exercise as a break from longer projects - like CG Boost’s Blender Fundamentals course - to bring a project through to a nice end result. I’ll be working on the more complex Barrel 2, which will set up my first proper foray into sculpting. Thanks again Grant.

Cool video. I recently started sculpting this type of 3D models. I chose low poly precisely because it is easier to make and looks delicious. Thanks to this video, I was really able Learn the basics throughout the video. Yes, of course, copying an action is not self-taught, but if you do this project day after day, you can see how easy it is to confuse combinations. And yes, I didn’t say at the beginning, I have almost 0 experience in blender. But I think if you surrender to your fantasies and sculpt and study the action from your own experience, I think you can achieve a lot. I think after several such “sessions” to make games for the arsenal of assets for one game that we plan to develop with my friend during this year. We'll at least give it a try, thanks author. Good luck everyone :3

*deletes default cube* Argh, what is this sudden pain in my chest? ^^ I really like this one. Especially when you build upon it in a later tutorial, the sculpting one. This shows, that nothing is a dead end and you can build up on everything. Im maybe more into the 3D printable stuff, but this is such a good workflow. As a beginner, you usually dont know where to start and many others on youtube would be, after 2 mins run time, already at the "that is our barrel here" stage. You take your time and this is super helpful

Grant, I haven't done anything 3D related in about 10 years. Life took over and I could no longer enjoy my hobby. Finally back to being able to chill and model stuff again. Your video is the first I came across and it has really helped jog my memory on shortcuts and the basics! Thank you so much! A few problem came up, first is aligning the sprouting face after extruding the top of the barrel, I think it's just skill issue tho. The other problem seems to be a doubles problem the same that another user had here, so I ended up using the non separated model. Last one is in the brace, alt + left click doesn't work and only select few faces, I don't know what causes it, it worked fine on the wooden part but not the metal braces, I ended up manually selecting the faces that wasn't selected. Anyone has a solution? Edit: The doubles problem is solved using the merging by distance option, but I haven't found the solution to the loop selection. I noticed that the loop wouldn't select the faces with vertex bevel on them, the work around I found rather than manually selecting is just using ctrl +, but that's it.

It would be good if you can show us how to make a isometric Room for a begginer

Hey can I get some assistance? at 4:44 when you scale your barriers it doesn't connect with the main barrel part. Mine does and it just doesn't let me edit it good.

Might be a bit late answer however I will explain for anyone who wonders that. I think you forgot to extrude first. Press "E" on your keyboard to extrude, then press "S" for scale mode. Now you can "Shift+Z" to exclude scaling from Z axis.

14:03 I don't see the options to assign, select or deselect even though I have faces selected. Anyway thank you for the tutorial

at 7:44 when i bevel the edge and delete the faces it only creates that triangle shape on the inside and not on the outside of the barrel, not sure how to fix it!

When I try to make the notch, the bevel only touches the outer side of the barrel, so the notch doesnt go all the way through

Asking for help. The bevel tool just doesnt seem to work right(in mutlible occasions). I tried to check proplems with normals, if verticies are doubled and used all Transform. Nothing helped and I tried remaking it suddenly the bevel worked, after folowing along on the next step the bevel didnt work again. Did I press something on accident? With workarounds I made my barrel quite happy with it. But it would be nice to use the techniques from the video.

doubles means one vertex on top of another. go to edit mode and press m to merge

The sculpting video will demand the pre-emptive warning of: "This will be and look much better if you have a pad" :P

at 7:47 Im found trouble to bevel it, as in the video his bevel goes down but mine doesn't

I think the colouring part is better to just use UV and then get a colour grid, as you need to import a texture for roblox studio for it to work

Is anybody having an issue with bevels only happening in 2D? Instead of getting a nice v cut in the mesh/wood of the barrel, I just get a 2D hold in the top. I think I'm in all the right modes that Grant uses in the video.
