Make a Low Buck $ Pick Up Truck Bed Dolly for Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota and Nissan trucks

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you ever need to remove the bed of a pick up truck, you need a place to safely put it. This dolly is inexpensive to make and is very sturdy and mobile. No special tools or materials, just stuff available at Home Depot, Harbor Freight or Northern Tool.
The dolly measures 45"x54"x26" (including the wheels).
Be sure to measure the width and length of your truck bed and look underneath to make sure there are no special considerations to look out for. This will work well for both short and long bed truck beds.
I built this dolly or truck bed cart to help me out with my project. It's a 1995 Chevy Cheyenne 1/2 ton pick up that I plan to ls swap with a 5.3, lower, add rear disc brakes, rebuild the complete suspension and steering AND swap in a 5.3 engine/transmission from a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. I added a link to facebook, where I started a site just for exchanging information about this swap in the 1988-1998 Chevy trucks.
WE GOT SOME LAURENCEVILLE GARAGE SWAG AND DECALS!!

Thanks for posting this, Andy! We used your dolly pattern for a '58 Chevy Apache and it worked fantastic.

I actually built this to serve as my CAB dolly as I wanted the cab to be as high as possible off the ground for doing bodywork e.g. welding in new cab corners but still fit into the garage. My configuration ended up being 39"X57"X27.5" - built on 5" casters. But in the interim (since I don't have the cab off yet) it is serving as a work service for dent removal on the box sides, welding, sanding etc. It is also serving duty for hanging the fenders off of to work on them. And at some point it will also serve as bed dolly. A multi-purpose configuration - lovin' it. Thanks!

Glad you found it helpful. I've since added a piece of plywood to the top and added larger wheels to one side. I have used it for way more now than I expected. The wheels on the side allow me to store it in the garage and take up less space.

I followed your suggestions on making it a total height of 26 inches and it is a great height :) I made it from scrap pressure treated wood that was about 12 years old. :) I gave the old treated lumber another purpose LOL The dolly measurements I used was 46"x65"x26". I used it on my 1985 C10 truck bed but didn't use casters because the bed and dolly are both going to be outside since I do not have a garage :( If you wanted to go up to 30 inches I believe that would be the highest height anyone should go for this project. Later, on after you have to repurpose the dolly it could be ideally altered and changed into a workbench by adding a metal countertop (1/8" sheet of steel ). Thank you for the idea :)

You're welcome, thanks for the kind words. I ended up cutting a piece of 3/4" plywood for the top to use as a rolling workbench. My wife has been cutting and painting a lot of wood trim pieces for a closet project she is working on and it worked great for that. I ended up with the height I used simply by cutting the wood I had into 4 equal pieces. That's just how it worked out.

I have the long bed of same truck. Should I make the length 5 feet?

You can, but it is not necessary. The bed is not that heavy.

I finished the frame yesterday before sundown. I couldn't find a wood chisel. But the little storage wheels I used a 5/16 big bolt and did it directly to frame. Can I do that as well with the main casters? Bolt it directly on? Or is the 2x6 base w carriage bolt necessary for strength? I was about to skip the base and bolt it directly w a 5/16 bolt & lock not. Will it be same strength? This was my 1st wood project EVER 😂 Thanks for the video

@@laurencevillegarageBTW I made the length 6 feet long, 3.5 feet wide. Seems sturdy or do I need to add a center support and wheel? My Gaylords tonneau cover is super heavy. 4 people kind of struggle.. maybe time for a new lighter one.

Sure, you can make it 5 feet. That won’t hurt anything. The best investment will be in good casters. Don’t get crappy ones. I got mine at Northern tool, I think the set of four was around $75 or so . My wheels are 4 inches in diameter, and they work well. However, 5 inch or even 6 inch wheels would roll easier. The frame will support the weight. I can’t remember if I mentioned it in the video, but I added a piece of plywood to the top, making it a bit of a deck or, moving workbench. Comes in really handy for other projects as well.

@@cybergrindin I used a 2 x 6 and cut four pieces that were basically square. Mounted those into the corners you can use lag bolts to hold the caster on. Or, without using a chisel, you can just find a large drillbit say about 1 inch and drill a hole about, a quarter of an inch deep this will allow you to drill a hole through that and counter sink the head of that bolt so that you can attach your caster and then put your lock washers and nuts on. That’s what I did.

IT looks like it might be too short in height.

Not at all, the casters are about 7.5" tall added to the wood, total height was about 26". Any higher might have made it a bit top heavy and harder to push around and see where I'm pushing it. I was able to push it around the garage easily by myself. Would I really change anything about it if I did it again? No, it works great. Don't cheap out on good casters. Minimum of 5" to go over cracks and irregularities in the concrete of my garage. Thanks for the comment.
