Make a Large Vinyl Wall Decal - How to Cut Larger Than Mat on a Cricut!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Get the free unicorn decals (two variations!) (Design # 138) at jennifermaker.com/large-wall-...
I love decorating the walls in my house. I’ve been known to paint them with murals and cover them with photos. But now that I have a cutting machine, it’s SO easy to create my own wall decor with vinyl! But here’s the thing - I like to make wall decor that is BIGGER than will fit on a standard 12″ x 12″ cutting mat. At first it might seem impossible, but you CAN totally do it and I’m going to show you how to make these large wall decals and larger-than-mat projects.
MATERIALS LIST (contains my affiliate links):
• Removable vinyl, preferably in rolls (I used the Cricut brand -- one roll each of Cream, Caribbean Blue amzn.to/2ThyXAC , Sunshine Yellow amzn.to/2WiOl1E , Flamingo Pink amzn.to/2S8ulzn , and white, plus two rolls of Grape amzn.to/2TgJcFB )
• A 24" long cutting mat (if you don't have one, you can use a 12" cutting mat and cut the design into smaller sections) amzn.to/2MAaBzF
• Transfer tape (I used three rolls of Cricut transfer tape) amzn.to/2CS14j8
• Painter's tape
• Weeding tool
• Scissors
• Craft knife or X-acto knife amzn.to/2G3Es24
• A way to cut your vinyl (I used the amazing Cricut) - see jennifermaker.com/cricut-cutt...
• My free SVG/DXF/PDF cut files/patterns (Design # 138) (available in my free resource library-get the password at the bottom of this post)
UPDATES/CHANGES: Check for any updates, changes, or additional videos for this project at jennifermaker.com/updates
First, let’s consider the type of walls that work best - these large vinyl decals are going to work best on smooth walls. You’ll find it a challenge if you have textured walls. For this tutorial, I had Greg paint a 4′ x 4′ board with an interior flat paint, exactly the same stuff most of us have on our walls. And I put large, 3-foot square vinyl decoration on it. Also be sure your wall is clean and free of dust.
Next, the vinyl! It’s important that you use removable vinyl on your walls - if you don’t, then when you go to remove your large wall decal because it’s time to move or you want to refresh your look, you might accidentally take some drywall off with it. But if you use removable vinyl, you won’t have any issues removing it. Cricut says it’s removable for up to two years, no doubt because adhesives do break down over time. So keep that in mind, especially if you’re a renter.
And what about the mat? You CAN use a standard 12″x12″ mat to do this if that’s all you have, but if you can get a 12″x24″ mat - it’ll mean less work for you! I used a 12″ x 24″ cutting mat. In fact, I used two so I could get the next mat ready while the other one was cutting.
Finally, you need to consider the design. Not all designs will translate well to the wall - you’ll want to start with a high-quality SVG, not a PNG or other lower resolution image. For this tutorial, I drew a couple of cute unicorns. They’re sized at 10″ in the file, but you can scale them up to whatever size you want (I went to 31″ high). Now as 31″ high is too big to all fit on one mat, you need to separate it into mat-sized pieces and then join it after you cut it.
STEP 1: GET A DESIGN YOU CAN SCALE UP AND PREPARE IT FOR CUTTING
STEP 2: PREPARE AND CUT YOUR VINYL
STEP 3: WEED YOUR VINYL FOR YOUR WALL DECAL
STEP 4: ASSEMBLE AND LAYER YOUR DESIGN
STEP 5: APPLY YOUR TRANSFER TAPE
STEP 6: PUT YOUR LARGE DECAL ON YOUR WALL
So I’m hoping you now see how to make large projects that are bigger than your cutting mat. It’s not difficult to do - you just need to separate whatever you want to make into mat-sized pieces and then put them together again after you cut them out.

Jennifer, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I recently had someone else I follow offer a video on how to avoid the top mistakes people make with their Cricut. It was a one hour sales pitch for the “Master” class being sold for over $200. A big waste of time. It did, however, give me an even greater appreciation for your hard work on the in depth videos you produce. Thank you for sharing your time, talent, and insights at no charge. This video in particular was SO much clearer and easier than another one I already watched. Breaking it into the large mats is key. I’ll be investing in large mats for a large stenciling project that’s been on my “some day” list for a couple of years. Thanks again for all you do to help us at home crafters.

Great video, buy I would like to see something made with card stock. It would be nice to see how you take the card stock off the mats, how you tape them together to look seamless. I can see how vinyl is easy because it's adhesive, but a video with card stock and the types of glues and tapes to use would be helpful. And how to stand them up. Again, great video, I wish I had your videos when I first got my machine.

Great video, but I cringe at how much vinyl and transfer tape you waste! I hope you just spread everything out so much because it was faster for the video, but you could have moved a lot of those pieces much closer together to save on your materials. That stuff is expensive!

Same here, when she was saying to "spread things out" I was like what??? you mean smash them in together so you can have huge chunks leftover you can use for the small bits of things later on, right? RIGHT?! I'll be honest, with my Midwestern penny pinching ways I purposely offset my materials by 1/8ths of an inch both down and to the right so I don't have the 1/4 inch waste the Cricut forces on you... I mean I got 4 extra ornament blanks out of my acetate by doing that!

Thank you Jennifer for another great video. One of the things I have found is that if you have a wrinkle near the edge of your vinyl you can gently work it out using your scraper. Another thing is that sometimes to get the vinyl from my 24” mat it is easiest to “drop” your mat- start pulling your vinyl away from the mat, then quickly drop (while holding mat in one hand and vinyl in the other) your hands while gently spreading the pieces apart. I have also found that sometimes I have to scrap the back of a design before peeling it off. Sometimes I will turn the design over to the back- after placing it on transfer tape- and peeling away the backer paper. Probably everyone that has had a Cricut for a while knows these tricks.

I so appreciate this tutorial - your step-by-step-step instructions were a big help! Also made me feel less of a klutz when I saw you getting wrinkles and creases when you were placing the vinyl down so a big thank you as well for showing us the real rather than the ideal. Just a note, I don’t recall where I saw it but thanks to another tutorial, I started using kid’s snap bands to keep my vinyl and wrapping paper rolls closed - I can get them at the dollar store and I can see them easier after getting the vinyl and am now ready to put it away. It has been much easier than rubber bands for me.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful tutorial. It’s great to see the potential mistakes that could happen. It’s also great to see how the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape when putting it on, glad to know it’s not just me. Beautiful project, thank you again for all of the knowledge that you share. I recommend you to several others in need.

Jennifer, your videos had inspired me to reconnect with Cricut. I have one of the Pre-explore early models and liked it. But I couldn’t afford the time then. Then I retired and saw some of your videos. My husband was getting interested in 3-d printer/cnc routing/and laser machines. He found out how similar the programs were and got interested as well. Thanks for the inspiration.

I agree with all of these other comments that I am reading.... I appreciate that you showed that you still need patience and perseverance no matter your experience level in creating these projects, as well as talking about how to keep from making the mistakes that can make even basic projects harder (like how to keep things from sticking together, and using painters tape like an extra hand, etc.) I'm about to start some bigger projects, and this is going to make the process quite a bit easier. Thank you.
