Half lap joints are a popular way to join two pieces of wood together and can be used on a number of woodworking projects. One way to cut half lap joints is on a table saw. George Vondriska takes you step-by-step on how to create a simple jig for cutting half lap joints on a table saw. The jig allows you to safely run your wood pieces vertically across the table saw to cut accurate half lap joints.

This was great! I built a jig to cut raised panels, but never thought ( until I saw this video) that my jig will work for cutting half lap joints. I even used a holdie downie thingie. Much better than trying to use a dado blade or making many multiple cuts with a combination blade and a sled. Thanks!!!!
As per what I understand, this jig would allow me to make tenons, raised panels and half lap joints WITHOUT taking away the parting knife, thus keeping an critical safety device in place I appreciate this a lot.
I needed this in the shop today. I ended up making many passes on the flat side without a dado stack which took quite a while. I'm going to try making this jig this next weekend. Thanks for the idea!
"Holdie Downie Thingie". I love it.
Going to add one of those to the shop. Thanks George.
Thank you for the easy to follow and understand video. This will come in handy and make things much safer.
thank you for yours videos.
This looks like what I need. Thank you! I'm going to make this jig today. ^5
Thank you, a really useful jig. On my to do list.
Can someone post actually using the jig? I made one but would like to see it in motion visually.
Wow, great tip!!
great vid... like toggle clamp...keeps simple. this. seems to.be very safe.
This jig worked great for creating the half-lap, but boy my (cheap) table saw did NOT like making that vertical cut with so much blade exposed into the end grain. Definitely do it in multiple passes. Also, the first time I messed up and didn't attach a long bit and the wood kept cocking to the side as I pushed it through the saw. That little detail was very important!
He's a handy little doll collector isn't he?
Nice vid, but you should have continued a little bit to show exactly how to set it up to get perfect halflaps and how to use it safely.

Thanks much for the plan! It will be really essential for us. What strength of toggle clamp should be used?
Thanks. .. very good rip ...8÷]
Where do I buy those clamps what are they called. I am new and have no many tools and carpentry stuffs
Nice jig but...i may be a newbie woodworker but why wouldn't you just lay the stock flat on the table saw and use a dado stack??

With a miter sled of course

I agree. However, use this method if you don't have a dado stack..or if you're like me and too lazy to change your blades

+Robert Kaylor it depends i used to hate changing blades but I had a project that called for using the dado blade, and with the wrenches that come with your saw its quicker

+Ben Redelings I wondered this exact same thing. I was thinking just a regular saw blade and just make several passes real quick and clean it up with a chisel or hand plane. I did like the video though! I haven't made any nice jig's like this yet.
Holdy downy thingy
How do us get flat plywood mine is always Bowes

Higher grade plywood maybe? I get the birch stuff from HD and use it for all my jigs. Works well enough.
The main reason numerous people did not complete the woodworking building is because of the incorrect plan.
