Make a Flemish Twist Bow String - NO JIG
In this week’s video Clay Hayes shows how To make a Flemish twist bow string for a longbow or recurve bow without using a string jig.
Flemish twist strings are the most common, and possibly the best bow string in the traditional archery world. They’re easy to make and relatively inexpensive. This string will be made with 14 strands of fastflight plus bowstring material. This, in combination with a .030 halo serving, will fit a Bohnning Classic nock very well.
If you're using a different nock, you may need to adjust the number of strands and or the size of the serving you're using to get a proper nock fit. The folks at 3Riversarchery.com can help get you set up with the right combination of materials.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: bowhunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

You an alright guy Cliff. No agendas, simply sharing and helping us teachable newcomers 👍
wow. Just made two strings after watching your tutorial. Outstanding delivery, at the right pace and with all required detail -but nothing that loses the viewer. Subscribed and thank you for the time you've invested sharing your skill. Well done!
The best tutorial for tying strings ever. Thank you, Clay.

I agree. I have always made endless loop strings. Now I am going to attempt a Flemish👍
i always wondered how to turn my reverse strings into a double looped bowstring. what a simple step I never realized. Something so simple can be so life changing…Thank you so much good sir!
Thanks to you clay, I was able to make a string for my horsebow, I just doubled the loop lenght and it was perfect, thank you so much!
If i could like this tenfold i would do so! I usually am not a very handy one but i was able to make my own string first time due to this awesome tutorial. You are the Man clay. Cheers!
Thanks a lot Sir , just made a flemish twist without a jig , after a failed first attempt. Thanks to your video.

Wow, endlich mal jemand der es ganz genau im Detail zeigt. Ein großes Dankeschön dafür und bitte mehr von solchen Videos.
this is hands down by far the best bow string making video on the internet!!!!
It's been awhile since I've made a bowstring, great refresher course. This is going in my favorites for future reference. Thanks for the video!
I just made my first takedown bow and made my string using the fabulous tutorial in this video. Thank you so much for the content. I'm sure ill be making strings for all my friends now.
Thanks Clay for passing on all the knowledge. I started knapping this year and well, here I am! I also have found the pleasure of working with some Osage. Can't wait to try making my own white wood bow.
After messing up on the second bow string I ever made this morning, I started scouring you tube for another video to watch that would hopefully get me out of this situation. And for the first time I think I understand exactly what is going on, so well done Clay. Your tutorial on what is quite a tricky business has to be as clear as it could ever be.
Amazing. Without a doubt the best string building tutorial I've ever seen. Thanks Sir! 😎
Amazing bow string making techniques, looks really achievable, and simple to setup with no complicated tools. I liked the various knot techniques, and it's good you talk slow and go through it slowly. Excellent presentation, keep up the good work. I feel more confident about making my own bow string, and knock serving. Thank you for sharing with the world.
I’ve just started building my own strings for a crossbow, seen many vids. This is so far the best explanation AND no jig. 👍🏽

It’s great to be versatile because you might be in a situation where you can’t get your hands on a jig , ie if your out hunting on a trip somewhere , how ever at home a jig can make things just a bit easier to make what ever size string you want as well , I have one and I love it but Clays method is just as good and does the same thing at the end of the day. Jigs definitely have there place when needed. 👍
I just made my first ever string for my Fred bear recurve watching your video! Thanks for such a great video, I also have some dried staves ordered to try my first shot at making a whole bow using your videos, hopefully it’ll work out for me just as well
Great video Mr.Hayes!Been bowhunting for most of my 62 years and always learn something, thanks!

You bet
Clay, you just shortened the string making process by at least 3 fold. Your first step , like I use , is the best time saver , compared to using the jig process. Thanks for being who you are!!!
I have always made a shot piece of string to wrap over and pull the end through. You have just educated me to a better way. Thank you Clay. Very good video. Please* keep them coming simple minds like mine need them.
I really needed this. I've been working on a self-bow for myself, and I'm gonna be building some board-bows for my 5 and 3 yr old daughter, and not having commercially available strings for a 3 yr old with a 15" draw length has me wanting to pull my hair out, and then I figured, well, sh*t, I bet I could MAKE a string. Thank you Clay!
Wow great clear tutorial one of the best how tos I’ve seen , you are a great instructor!
Good day bro, thank you for helping me to understand a little bit about making my own bow string. I've tryed several folks, nothing. Until you. Thank you again, I'm going to go make my string for my bow. Enjoy your day.
Brilliant, Making stuff like this is a skill learned, therapeutic and a sense of accomplishment.. I remember when I learned to serve my first center on my bows, I was so happy that it looked just like the ones I bought, and more importantly I didn't have to worry about buying strings anymore..

Clay, the first double loop twisted string I made was made watching your first video on this subject. It is also what got me started using mono fish line serving. This video is even better. Thank you for sharing!

Hey man, it’s a snowy day over here in Minnesota. Just refinished one of my flatbows and laced on a deerskin grip and strike plate. Strings making has had a way of making me edgy. Your video was watched, watched again and enjoyed . Clay , thank you for the class on string making, I’ll be calling 3 rivers archery soon here for goodies.
This tutorial is by far the best one i have come across. Unfortunetely my flatbow just exploded so it's gonna be a while before i'll need this video again. Definitely saving it tho
Thank you Clay. I had forgotten how to do this. Good refresher course.
That was the first full explanation to sink in. I got it, thanks. I have made cordage from a variety of materials. No bowline though. I have a nice stand of hickory and Elm saplings. I am, with your inspiration, going to try my hand at green bow building. I make a lot of twisted canes and know how important it is to cure the poles before debarking. This will be good practice.
Thanks Clay. I've learned alot through your videos, and I've been wanting to know more on how to make a flemish string. I'll start practicing your technique this weekend.
That was fascinating! I have been building selfbows for a few years but have never learned to make a string. Now I have a very good understanding of it, thank you! Great channel!

Excellent! They’re not hard to make.
The way you do this is so much more simple and practical than a lot of other methods I've seen here on KZread. A lot of them have a bunch of measuring and counting twists and just a bunch of extra stuff that made the process seem complicated to me. This video made it clear to me. Thanks for the great content!
Great video. I like this way of making a bow string. Thank you so much Clay.
That was Awesome!! made it look easy clay.. you walked through it very nicely and your explanation made it simple to follow along! Thank you!!
WOW. That was excellent! Thanks for showing us this.

Wow, you even made that look like Art Work. Thanks for the lesson that even us beginners can understand.
Thank you for making this video!
This approach to the "2nd loop" is new one for me. Will give it a try.
Thanks Clay, with your channel I learned so much! I am at the tillering process, I needed a string and boom I find your video! Getting ready to hunt wild turkey soon, I am so stoked haha!
Awesome video. Thanks for the great work.
Great video like usual! Always learn a lot from them! Thanks !
Thank you. Just what I needed right now. Love your channel btw.
Just built my first string tonight on my first attempt. Very well explained, thank you!!

Awesome 👏
Just made my first bow string by following this tutorial. It came out pretty well and works a charm! My work on the final weave after getting the length dialed in with the bowyer's knot leaves a bit to be desired, looking a little untidy, but the whole thing works fine and I'm very happy with my first attempt. Thanks so much for a super clear demonstration Clay!

Great Demo and explanation
you deserve a Nobel prize for this video
Holy cow! Great video!!
Kay so after a dreadful two days of trying I was not only able to salvage the string from the first on that I thought was no good but turned around and made another, I truly was humbled by this experience, thankyou for this video, this knowledge will stay with me now, I had to break quite a few eggs, but I got two omelets out of it
Clay makes it look so easy, well let me tell you it's not that easy. He does explain the whole process very well, I just had to watch this video several times and do some trial-and-error attempts before I got it right. Well, at least I think I'm doing it correctly. Thank you for the information and for your excellent tutelage.
CLAY every thing is simple when you know how like your vids i know nothing about bows
Just made my first string using your video Clay. Thank you sir!

Thank You. Very helpful.
Thanks very much for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks Clay :)
Thanks for this TOP lesson !
Thanks Clay, I love it! This method takes out the headache of getting the reverse twist just right. I like to use one color for strings. So what I will do is color code the ends before weaving in the bottom loop. Not that its necessary but I over simplify things.

bowman321123 what type of string is that in the video
Great tutorial!
Explained Well!
Watching this reminded me of one of those previous string making vids that you done, must be over a year ago now. In that instance you, like here, laid in the top loop and spliced in the lower one..except you applied the flemish twist over the entire length. Initially copied that example but adapted it to suit me. Although applying the flemish twist through the whole length uses more material and results in a heavier string, it offers a good robust string (I have one on one of my 55# bows made with B50 for a year now). The thing I do differently to you is that I use the conventional "rope splice" loops for both ends as I found it neater and easier to get the exact length..I then serve over the spliced area, just for belt and braces approach and it's tidy. When I made that string I used to use a wire clothes hanger bent around my door handle leading across the room to a small hobby vice on my desk!
Keep up the good work, you simplify things that would be complicated with worse videography, your camera angles and lighting are great, you clearly explain what your doing effectively.
Fantastic You make it looks so easy.
I've saved this for future.. I will attempt this asap.. Thank you! :)
Thank you. My bowstring is served now.
Very good explanation. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing😊
Hello from Bulgaria :) I don`t usually like videos, bot I do like this one :))
Hell yeah!.... thanks Clay
As always great video
It’s been a while since I’ve made a string. Great video. I’ve always just left the timber hitch on one end, but I think I’ll give two lops a try
Well done!
Very useful video. Thank you, keep up great work!
Awesome! I’m filing this away for down the road when I begin to make my own strings! I am hoping to one day get into self bows. I plan on cutting a few staves this spring and putting them up to season while I learn as much as I can with me factory made bow this year. Next year I hope to make my first bow. However I will attempt my first string this year. Thanks for the help and the inspiration.

Halfway through my first self bow. String materiel ordered. Thanks for the great reference videos. Im hoping for a Traditional Bowyers Handbook for my birthday or Christmas. If not, I'll order it on 12/26!!!
Hi Clay. I'm about to take some Rowan to make a stave with my son to make a simple selfbow and I had been thinking forward to stringmaking so this is really timely, thanks. Obviously there's craft and learning here but at least I understand all the steps involved in terms of weaving lines for integrity under extreme tension. I had wondered how this feat was achieved and I love the simple but effective tying innovations that have evolved to solve these problems. Thanks for sharing!
This is great! Thank you so much!
Awesome 🤘
Now I gotta order the materials, thanks brother
Fantastic Video!! Well done!
thank you Clay. You brought important skills to archers like me, even though your accent is a little bit hard to understand for me.Greetings from Germany......

Perfect, got it straight away, other tutorials over complicate it. Thanks mate!
Great video and very informative, but once again I was admiring the bow. Reflexed and the limbs arrow straight, not a bit of deflex. Good job on the string, amazing job on the bow.
