    A massive thank you for sharing this inexpensive, potentially life saving DIY ingenuity. Your passion for achieving excellence as a custodian to these beautiful creatures is exceptional and comes across in all your work. A few minutes ago, a repurposed plastic lysol wipe container was just discovered by three hangry Opheodrys aestivus and it made their day! Waxworms and BSFL. Being arboreal and in a huge vivarium creates an analogous scenario that Cham keepers face,, for which you have the perfect answer - free of charge. Thank you for sharing all of your herp wisdom and doing so with an infectious delivery - Andrew

    As an added comment: Many of our feeder insects climb, but some, like Black Soldier Fly Larva, can’t. Once the chameleon gets used to you using the same feeder run cup every time they will actually start looking for food in it. Then even bugs that don’t climb will be readily eaten as well.

    I'm looking at options for my male veiled chameleon. I've got him in a free range setup currently, so I'd like to avoid feeders jumping out of the container and being loose in my bedroom. Hence why I've been hesitant about these open-type feeder containers. Is jumping an issue at all?

    Is it okay if I used a piece of curtain as climbing surface? They climb on it so I think its okay

  • @ChameleonAcademy

    @ChameleonAcademy

    3 жыл бұрын

    The first question would be why not use branches? Chameleons are designed for branches and curtains are not designed for the inside of a chameleon cage. Although chameleons can physically climb on curtains they aren’t something that goes into a chameleon cage.

    What do you think of using a large enclosure 24 x 24 x 48, to house a baby veiled chameleon? And using a feeder cup to feed until they are at least juveniles.

  • @ChameleonAcademy

    @ChameleonAcademy

    4 жыл бұрын

    Angus Paul 24x24x48 is perfect for a baby veiled chameleon. I am a huge proponent of large cages for small chameleons. They do much better and you are able to create much better gradients. And the feeder run cup is the perfect tool the ensure that food doesn’t hide.

    Question, I’ve heard that the exoskeletons of mealworms make the chameleon sick. Is this true

  • @ChameleonAcademy

    @ChameleonAcademy

    5 жыл бұрын

    Mealworms are not considered as nutritious as other feeder insects, but they are a good insect to rotate in every now and then for variety. The concern going around the community about mealworms causing impaction comes from 1) feeding too many mealworms (they are not a good staple feeder insect) and 2) too low of temperatures for your chameleon species (all different, remember) to properly digest. So, the answer is no, the chitin of the mealworm exoskeleton, when fed appropriately, will not make your chameleon sick. But the community has run into instances where the chitin has created complications with chameleons because the husbandry was not perfect. So, although I will make sure the truth is known that eating mealworms is not bad for your chameleons, mealworms do not have enough nutritional value to justify the effort needed to realign the negative community beliefs.

    Jeremy Foster you can use the same feeder as their tongues are pretty long. Just make a network of small branches that go close to where the insects run up. You can also just use smaller jugs to make the feeder, but I prefer the small branch network method.
