Makai Kingdom - Full Review 【PS2】

Ойындар

ヾ(^∇^)
Revisiting this good old game was a fun experience I had... At the same time damn stressful with all the grinding in the game for weeks! It took me a while to get a 100% run in the game, all the more make a video out of it! But it's worth it in the end.
ヾ(^∇^) - "Preserving the memories I had with the game"
Before this game goes away to obscurity, I end up making 4 different videos of the game to have a complete archive of the game. Since all of the videos about Makai Kingdom are too messy in a way, I end up compiling and making a review of it all. Hopefully, you guys might enjoy it!

I'm really glad you like the videos I made in the past, especially the Metal Slug one. It's one of my favorite games before, and I do plan on covering most of it (even those infamous ones like Metal Slug 3D, Metal Slug Infinity, and Metal Slug Attack). Although for now, I guess I'd be delaying a bit longer on my videos. Unfortunately, my external hard drive suddenly died. I had to redo some of the files I made in the past to recover the loss. But I still plan on uploading a new video soon this month, hopefully, you might enjoy an old ps1 game I'll be reviewing on :)

@K1PM Really love this video. Just discovered your channel through this, and I love your JRPG videos. (Also Pinoy ka diba? Ako din!) I tried finding a way to contact you on your about page, but it seems writing a comment is the best way. Wanted to talk about a possible JRPG project, any way to contact you directly? Look forward to hearing back. And if not, great work on the video. The new Makai (Prinny vol 2) on Switch is awesome.

Thanks! It took me a while to finish this video, but I'm glad you guys seem to like it! I wanted to preserve this hidden gem, especially since it's not that well-known compared to the main titles (Disgaea series) Sorry about the 'About Page' thing, I kinda forgot to update on that part. Not exactly sure which contact details I should leave. Whether it'll be on a separate e-mail or a discord channel of my own. But I'll be sure to set it up, once I managed to get some extra free time! (I'll be sure to notify you about it!) I really appreciate the possible JRPG project you mentioned, but tbh I probably don't do collaborations for now. I kinda don't have to experience it that much, nor how to work on it. I'd probably just be awkward about it. I usually do work alone on every project, while trying to ask for opinions on what I've made from time to time. But if you got any suggestions and opinions, I really appreciate it!

@@michaelchua7427 Sorry for the late response. I've been having hardware problems lately, it sucks my new desktop keeps crashing. Keep getting a lot of blue screens recently, even while trying to reply on this message. Probably a hardware problem on the memory, or because of the recent system updates on my drivers. (Keep getting like "ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"). Had to pause on my current project because of this

You didn’t mentions this but I have to ask, does the game has randomized (or procedurally generated) dungeons/areas maps? Or an endless (ancient cave/tower) mode? I’m interested in jrpgs but I can’t find one for the ps2 that has this particular detail. Great review by the way!

  • @K1PM

oh damn.. I completely forgot about that part, damn my bad. Thanks for the heads up on it, no wonder there seemed to be something missing. The dungeon levels are a bit of a mixed batch. Let's say it's somewhat around 30% stages within the chapters are fixed. While the rest, are procedurally generated set of the fixed parts of a stage. It's not completely randomized in a way, but at least those stages aren't broken in a way. Kind of like a jigsaw puzzle if you will. Some pieces would fit together, but the content of it is rather different in a strange kind of way. It doesn't have an endless mode, but it does have a 10~100 level floor dungeon, that's based on a character's wish. Usually, that lasts around 1~1.5hrs of play in my experience. What kind of jrpg are you looking for? more of a traditional turn-based kind, dungeon crawler, or something unique? I suggest you could try checking out Dark Cloud 2 if you're looking for something more unique! The style of it is a bit off. But some of the game's mechanics and minigames are really unique! I'd love to create a video about it, but I'm still kinda working on a different one for now (Legend of Mana). EDIT: I end up fixing some of my sentences in there, and explained them much more clearer. I was a bit sleepy at the time on my first reply

I've been thinking about what you said about the jrpg along with that particular detail thing for the PS2 (I even asked my brother about the past ones we've played)... I think there's not that much with that kind of particular detail for the PS2. I remember some but aren't all on the PS2 such as Lufia 2 (SNES), Torneko The Last Hope (PS1), Chocobo's Dungeon 2 (PS1), Digimon World 2 (PS1), Dark Cloud 2 (PS2), Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (DS), and Recettear (PC-steam)... Those are the ones I remember so far, then again those are on different platforms. Hopefully, the ones I mentioned might interest you in trying it out :)

@@K1PM thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated. I’m looking for a more traditional jrpg (even dungeon crawler)and not roguelikes because I already know there aren’t that many on the ps2/ps1 besides the ones you mentioned. The “ancient cave” term actually comes from lufia 2 and that’s why I asked you about a game that has 100 floor dungeon for ps2 but I guess there aren’t any besides this one :(

@@Kurowuf oh dang, I thought you're alright with roguelike games with a jrpg kind of setting when you mentioned the procedurally generated dungeons. unfortunately yeah, kinda seems pretty rare to have that kind. I did actually noticed when you mentioned the "ancient cave", it reminded me of Lufia 2 :) But yeah, it's really rare to find one on the PS2. Most PS2 games I've experienced were primarily action-oriented or fighting kind of games. (despite I do love playing other genres, like Patapon) Hopefully you'll find one though on the long-run :)

Keep in mind I haven't played those others except Disgaea, Disgaea 1 2 and 4 5 are on PC btw the rest of the games on the list I haven't really researched enough. EDIT: Trinity Universe was part of Atelier another fun JRPG's series I suggest checking out. I personally haven't been able to get into them, but I wanna so badly.

It's one of my top favorites for the PS2. And especially not a single review I've seen talked about the important and unique aspects of the game. Like the camera idea function on crafting, and that fish raising mini-game that I really like. I wanted to not only just make a review just for the heck out of it... but rather create a kind of archive on what were old games about. Especially those childhood games of mine that were already left forgotten by many.

My problem with makai Kingdom is the story plus the characters that are very mediocre, the game is basically a grindfest where the Gameplay is above the story, disgaea and phantom Brave at least have a good story and characters plus a good Gameplay while makai only has one of those traits imo.

This game was so far ahead of its time, it's crazy to think of how shallow SRPGS are these days compared to this. What happened?

  • @K1PM

    @K1PM

    Жыл бұрын

Complacency at its worst. A lot of the devs usually ends up becoming too complacent with their works. Just like the same thing what happened with Square Enix's Harvestella, or the new Valkyrie Profile they made, Valkyrie Elysium. It sucks how they tried to copy other games, yet failed to live it up to their name.
