Majority of Irish people ‘do not trust the Government’ - CSO
Less than half of people in Ireland trust the Government, a new survey has found.
The study from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) finds more than eight-in-10 respondents (83%) reported they trust 'most people'.
Political parties had the lowest levels of trust with approximately one-in-four people reporting they trust them.
Seven-in-10 people say they trust the Gardaí and close to half (47%) report they trust the news media.
Psychotherapist Stella O'Malley told Newstalk Breakfast people's attitudes have changed due to social media.
"I think the lack of faith people have in the Government and in the institutions is quite revealing," she said.
"It is reflected when you speak to people - you realise there's been a kind of distinct change in our attitudes."
Ms O'Malley said she believes people are confusing curated content on platforms like TikTok for news.
"When I work with young people, they're getting their news from TikTok, and it's very curated," she said.
"That's not actually the news, I might say, because I'm of a different generation and they're like, 'Oh no I saw it on TikTok'.
"Arguably in the last 10 years there's been a big shift maybe with Donald Trump and the 'fake news' era.
"At the same time social media arrived and started producing content which is very news-focused but wrapped up in entertainment."
Ms O'Malley said the COVID-19 pandemic also saw another paradigm shift where people "started to significantly lose trust in what the Government were saying, what the news outlets were saying... and seeing it more as opinion".
"I think that has really shaped people's attitudes".
She said different rules and approaches by various countries meant "news is depending on who is delivering it".
"It was destabilising for people who wanted a solid ground that they could just look to the governmental institutions... for definitive facts," she said.
"It feels like that solid ground has been destabilised".

Both of them are completely of touch, why would anyone trust the government when the whole country is in the worst state its been in in my lifetime anyway.

@ronancullen1398 really, tell that to the current generation who themselves have to emigrate or the bundling in of refugees into towns without any communication or the way the HSE is run. The lack of housing, tent cities. The 80s led into the prosperity of the 90s, the damage done by this government could mess this country up forever.

Their pass actions speak for themselves, but I can understand why you're being biased, You have to keep your boss/ourGov happy at the cost of the truth, Shameful really 😕
Ok newstalk, if we want to talk numbers…put up up stats showing what politicians and there partners/wives own multiple rented properties…then, tell us they are not in it for themselves
Left wing radio ..... Newstalk completely out of touch with Irish people
Shane is so gullible what a plonker. 🤣😅🤣
One of the main reasons people so not trust the government is due to the appalling health service that we have in Ireland. We need a real health service and not one run by insurance companies.

Don't forget the tyrannical madness from March 2020 on.....
If one accepts the postulation that the politicians in general are well intentioned and they genuinely act in the best interests of the people one can only conclude, based on the current state of the public institutions that they are totally incompetent.
Another balanced argument from news talk 😂😂😂😂😂
It's hardly a suprise. Misled people on the implications of the family and care referenda when they actually had legal advice from the attorney general's office to the contrary while at the same time insisting they want to tackle 'misinformation'. Pursue policies of increased immigration levels when polls show the public overwhelmingly want less (3.5% population increase in 2023 here would be among the biggest population increases in a country on record). They often lie saying we need huge more and more immigration for job vacancies when Ireland, in fact, had the lowest in the entire EU at the end of 2023. They made a mess of the asylum system to the point where we're seen as the land of milk and honey to economic migrants abusing the asylum system. Despite Georgia and Algeria being 2 of the most common countries of origin of asylum seekers here in 2023, we had a rejection rate of just 19% compared to an EU average rejection rate of ~50%. Meanwhile big businesses are making shed loads of cash from housing asylum seekers. They pushed through the EU migration and asylum pact without any substantial public debate or engagement. They're trying to push through anti-democratic anti-free speech hate speech laws which could be used as a weapon to shut down criticisms on government policies and positions and has been a disaster in every other country they've been implemented in. The housing situation continues to deteriorate. The health system continues to deteriorate. Varadkar leaked confidential GP documents undermining government negotiations, they continue to pander to foreign investment funds at the expense of Irish citizens. There's also rampant corruption. - Varadkar broke rules by campaigning outside polling stations for the referenda, a Fine Gael candidate Marian Agrios extorted developers for personal gain, Paschal Donohue didn't declare election expenses and Fine Gael's Phil Hogan broke every Covid rule in existence and thought he was above the law. There's a long list of other controversies too - Katherine Zappone, Dara Calleary etc etc. You'd have to be utterly insane to trust them based on all of the above. They don't care what people want.

Apologies, but the Irish government is not benign. Mary Lou Macdonald is able to stand up and criticize the two major parties because they will not fix housing and Healthcare. The current Taoiseach is standing there using his statistics to say the economy and housing are not so bad. That isn't a benign situation. Young Irish people are going abroad as a result of benign.

I wouldn't expect anything else from a political correspondant and someone someone whose occupation depends on government looking after them. Majority of politicians line thier own pockets and look after themselves. And that goes right down to local level
