Major Triads: How to Be Advanced
Музыка
Here's how you can use a major triad to stand in for any other type of chord (minor, diminished, whatever). For me, that's extremely useful when I'm sampling and I design something cool around a recording of a major chord, but then as a result I'm forced to play major chords exclusively, because I'm married to the sample. Even then, I can still get through any chord progression by transposing the major chord up or down some number of half steps and sticking the right bass note under it. In this video I explain exactly how that's possible, and to illustrate, I'll take you through my arrangement of the Stevie Wonder song "Isn't She Lovely" using only major triads and a bassline. For a nice little chart I made about how to turn a major triad into any other type of chord, see below. Drone footage filmed by John Marty.

USE THE TABLE BELOW TO CREATE ANY CHORD WITH JUST A MAJOR TRIAD AND A SINGLE BASS NOTE
-Put your bass note on the root of whatever chord you're trying to make. (So if you're trying to create F# minor, put your bass note on a low F#.)
-Find the specific chord quality you're looking for from the table below.
-Stick a major triad above or below your bass note according to what the chart says. (For example, the chart says "+3 half steps" next to the entry on minor chords. So to create F# minor, stick a major triad 3 half steps above your bass note, which is rooted on F#. Three half steps above F# is A, so if you play an A major triad over an F# bass note, you'll be creating a minor chord [strictly speaking it's a minor 7 chord].)

maj7, maj9: +0 half steps, or +7 half steps
maj7#11: +2 half steps

As someone that has been "hacking" music theory all my life (and refusing to learn things properly) I loved this video!
This is the kind of functional exercise I think people should use who think reharmonization is cool but don’t want to mess with tonal theory. Also democratizes vertical harmony (or counter point) writing in a cool way people could pick up when using different voices in their arrangements. I love that. Very very good content.
This is amazing. I'm just getting into theory so it's still too advanced for me, but it's blowing my mind and inspiring me. Previously I'd just feel baffled and frustrated and exposed as a sub-remedial musician.
love this shit. please do more

super useful! brain grew watching this - i’ve always been pissed off at synths that will take a chord and then just stupidly let you play the exact same chord chromatically on the keyboard, but now i see that it’s not so stupid, and I can actually do something with that by adding bass. plus i always would be putting in different chords into a sampler but now i see i can get away with just one sometimes and do cool stuff with it love the final version of isnt she lovely #TPPLOA

you freaking wizard. I just downloaded loads of patches today for the OP-1 and so many were major chord patches and I just tossed them. Now, deep down I knew this, but I didn't know it until you unlocked this from the brain vessel. So you're a wizard.

Wow I didn’t realize as much about theory into I saw this. Seriously you’re extremely talented and smart to think through all this

You're attacking tough concepts with a guerilla, IDGAF attitude. It is wonderful.
Great work! I intuitively play the guitar not knowing (I don't know the name of the notes), because I hear what you are talking about in how I play and how I know how the notes harmonize.
More of this please. I need more music theory fuckery.
Actually, when you're missing some altered notes, which are melodic intervals anyway, you can play that note as a fill on the upper octave on the bass like a fill, it will sound natural and musical.
Have you ever considered doing the Meris Polymoon? I have one and i can't begin to understand it. I'm devouring your content and learning so much, but that pedal has millions of possibilities.... thanks for such great content

I use the Bill Evans move as a basic non JaZZ Dude. The III chord over the One Chord. So over C its E Minor E G B D tp give you a major 9 chord. Over A Minor C E G B for an A Minor 9. The III chord kinda sucks as you get and F a b9 but depends you can make the G a G# and go a tritone. Great channel. I'll have to look at your six half steps move as I play II V I's over every key and the trick sounds "wrong" especially the III chord. Does that mean as you say go to F# if in C and playing the E Minor? Like a G 3rd inversion? So it's an E with G B D F# Always love your videos

The six half-steps trick will definitely sound weird, but it should only sound about as weird as an altered dominant chord, like a dominant 7 flat-5 or something. For that reason it probably works best when it's being used on some type of V chord. As for your question, let's start with a ii-V-I in the key of C. Normally that would be Dm7, G7, Cmaj7. If you wanted to do the six-half-step chord sub I talk about in this video for the G7 chord, you would play Db over G, turning the progression into this: Dm7, Db/G, Cmaj7. The Db/G will be dissonant for sure, because it's basically a G7b5b9. But dominant7 flat5 flat9 chords do exist in the world and if you voice it right, and voice the Cmaj7 afterward right, it will sound cool.
This intro sounds really interesting, but all I can hear is your fucking OJ videos because you have a very particular tone and cadence and I shared your Tropicana videos with everyone I know and watched with them to make sure they watched your TPPOJLA videos.
