Buying a 100% polyester summer dress was a huge mistake. And it wasn't cheap! It didn't breathe at all, the design supposed summer but the fabric made me sweat like hell. I even got skin irritation from it. Now I always check the fabric, and sadly almost all dresses are made from polyester 😑

I had the same experience. I am 1,80 m and have 60 kg. Sooo, I understand what you mean. But, I had no problems with Asos/tall section.

lalagonegaga. Agreed. I usually can’t watch most fashion youtubers- it’s all flashy music and editing. Justine is giving us quality fashion knowledge. Truly a channel of substance.

After a career in ballet, I became a photo stylist BIG difference between what you see on television as in " I am a fashion stylist" phooey! A photo stylist is a person who makes the clothes look good, in photographs​, we put clamps on the back of the clothes, rip seams open(so the clothes fit), glue things down, pin things up...you name it we do it/destroy it and reinvent it. BUT guess what I shop online and think again if you think I haven't made a mistake or three...and I really really should know better.

In addition to items that have impossible care instructions are items where the care doesn't quite match the style and fabric. Those are red signs to me. Why is a casual, unadorned, cotton sweater dry clean only? I feel like a lot of companies are moving towards more "delicate" care to cover for poorly made items. So if you wash that sweater and it falls apart, they can say it was dry clean only and it's your fault.

That has been a "policy" in some retail stores (especially smaller ones, boutique style collections) too. They could not get away with that with large online retailers or catalogue senders (like Otto Versand in Germany). And I noticed that H & M and chains like that usually have a reasonable policy regarding the care instructions. - If it is dryclean it is either your risk or that of the drycleaner if something goes wrong with the garment.

From recent personal experience, Zoe Hongs channel and research, I came to the conclusion that even high end brands simply stick approximate things on the care instructions. And if they could get away with it they'd stick "dry clean only" on everything, because then they don't have to spend the time (read money) to ACTUALLY check how to care for the fabric - you know, actually taking yards of the fabric and cleaning them in different ways to check which is best. I love cashmere but was always wary of buying anything in it because of the added cost of dry clean. Turns out dry cleaning is actually horrible for cashmere and what I should have been doing was buying a washing liquid for cashmere and hand washing it. I'm in the process of learning about different types of fabric now and I'm only using the labels as suggestions.

I have bought furniture on-line successfully but I have never been intrepid enough to take a chance with clothes. This video actually made it looks possible to give it a try. Really liked your post; vr good points. Tx!

What bothers me the most about online shopping (or before that I would sometimes shop from catalogs like Lands End) is the deception in the photos. I learned that the items the models are wearing are usually pinned in the back so they look more flattering and fitted.

And they almost always use models of one body type. I want to see how clothes are going to fit my curvier figure. I find myself gravitating towards items that have a larger model in the few shops that have them.

Or just the poses theyre in - like cinching with there hands/arms to make a garment look more tailored. I hate that - I gotta go over all the pictures with a magnifying glass to find the truth!

@@jehold2010ify Back in the old days, LL Bean used to use their employees as models. It was great because you could see how clothes looked on real people. Now everyone is literally a foot taller than me and weighs even less. Sigh... I did see a LOT of plus size models on Everlane recently, so there is hope! I'm not plus size, not super skinny... just normal. Where are my people?????

Hi Justine! I work in the fashion industry in NY . Very often when companies order the samples for the photo shoot from the factory, they make the samples 2 " longer because they know the clothes will be photographed on models who are taller than their average customers. They want the proportions in the photos to appear like they will on average customers. So one more reason to check the garment lengths if you are tall!

Justine, you should NEVER pay to return an item that arrived damaged no matter what website you ordered it from! I have an online vintage site and it is definitely every company's responsibility to pack and ship every item they send in order to get it to the customer safely and in its original state. Next time contact the company and have them send a replacement or refund. :)

About the umbrella though, no reputable company wouldn't accept a return, for free, for a defective item. It should be outside of their normal return policy and generally speaking with something like an umbrella they just ship you a new one and tell you to trash it. If a company doesn't fix the issue with a defective item, I don't shop with them anymore. It doesn't say much about standing behind their product.

Reading my mind, this definitely should supersede the return policy. I would go one step further and open a dispute with my credit card company because of the item being broken.

These are great tips, Justine. I wish our sizing was an uniform as it is in the EU. In the US, the sizing is ALL over the place and you really never know unless you study the size chart or are familiar with a brand. Erin xo

Justine - EU consumer law means that the Umbrella Company is obligated to pay for the return because the item was faulty. It is not an ordinary return.

+Justine Leconte officiel The company who sends the package is normally liable for damages under transportation. The Umbrella Company chose that shipping service, not you, so they have to live with the risk involved. If you send a relative to the storage facility to collect the package - you have to live with the risk of that relative breaking it on the way home. The law basically looks at who should carry the risk, and places it on the person with the most control. Naturally, the stores don't want to inform you of all these things. People knowing their rights is expensive! ;) I don't know the nitty gritty details, but the eu consumer law is the same throughout the EU. We also use it in Norway, even though we are not a full member. The idea that the sender is responsible for shipping is pretty international, I believe. Sometimes the online stores can get a refund from the post office, but this is not your responsibility.

I was wondering the same thing because all online stores I shop on have a free return policy for damaged and broken items. Of course I'm based in the US, but I feel like all other companies should have the same policy. In fact, they don't even ask for the item back, they'll just send you a new one

Justine Leconte officiel if you bought the item as a consumer (B2C), you do not carry the risk during transport and you are entitled to amendment or new delivery, as the item does not possess the qualities you bought the with. This is why your return will not fall under withdrawal but rather under garanty claim. As you yourself run an online shop, i can recommend checking out this blog shopbetreiber-blog.de (I work for this company auditing online shops) so you can find out more about legal regulations for selling (and buying) online. Hope this info helps!

Also the company is responsible of packagig yor item in the way of preventing damage to it in transport. when you get a damaget parcell you should allways take pictures for to send to the company, they may use them later to get their refund from the post. As a consumer you have no way of knowing when the parcell or the item was damaged .

I went through most of the mistakes you mentioned, but I gave up ordering clothes online altogether. No unified measures, bad cuts, no lining and if there is you wish there is not as it is tight, pulling, hanging out; fabrics are predominantly synthetic (summer dress, tunic, beach top,.... made out of polyester!!!). And that endless price game where you have 30% or 40% discount and some plastic, sleeveless dress with elastic around the waist (just an example!) went from $147 to "only" $88 is just brain insult. Thanks but no thanks. Not even if it is for $1. Smart shopping became difficult in the last 10 years. But the better we are informed, the less of that crap will be on the market (or I am too optimistic?!).

When I'm really in doubt about the size,I usually get one size bigger and... if needed.. I take to a seamstress to adjust it properly... (mainly if the garment comes from a place where women are smaller in general... like Asian countries) Better have more fabric to work with.... 😊

Sometimes the fabric is ok in composition, but it's not obvious how dense it is. That what often makes the difference for me.

I love your videos! They are concise, organized, and educational!! My online shopping mistake is buying dresses online and not checking the return policy before buying.

Another mistake in terms of waste is not returning things that don't really like- postage can be expensive- but if you never wear it, it's all money wasted. For example, I ordered a dress from the UK for about €80. I was uncertain about it. It probably you have cost me €20 to post it back to the UK, I didn't want to pay €20, telling myself maybe I'll wear it with a jacket when the weather is nicer. I have never worn it after a year of being in my wardrobe.

Being a curvy petite myself, I get this. I have a bust and hips with a small waist. "Curvy" these day always seems to mean plus size, as if a petite can't have curves 😕. A good belt or tailoring it myself often seems to be the way to go

If you ordered online and you get something damaged immediately take some pictures, email them to the company and ask whether they want you to send the broken item back. Normally they don't want it back and they let you choose whether to give you a full refund or send you a new item at no additional expenses. Advantage by paying with credit card is in a worst case scenario you could withdraw the payment within a couple of weeks.

I think online shopping is great for finding interesting designs for a good price or getting things that are unavailable in an area we live in but I just adore the process of “going shopping “. It is like a cardio and therapy for me at the same time. Despite me preferring the traditional way I appreciate you sharing these awesome tips for the times I get less sentimental about shopping hehe.

@@lauren8627 Some people don't like to wear baggy clothes. I am very skinny myself, smallest size in most shops or even a not-existing even smaller size. Yes, as long as the clothes don't fall off, I *can* technically wear them. But I don't want to. I have a 100-pound hourglassshape. I want to freaking show it off! But no, everything nowadays is baggy and boxy even when it's technically my size. It's just frustrating and I only dare altering second-hand clothes myself, which I start to do out of frustration.

@@gittevandevelde2208 I have found a lot of vintage clothing that's sized for you! I used to be (decades ago) 102 pounds, and the vintage stuff fit me perfectly. We have gotten a LOT bigger as a nation in the VS. I'd look at who Scarlett Johansson wears. She's about your size. Het beste!

Hey Justine! I the case of your broken umbrella I would recommend you to definitly get in contact with the costumer service. Usually it does make a differnce if you just want to return something or if you've received a faulty item. It should be possible for you to get a new one, maybe without shipping the broken one back at all, if you provide them pictures.

Merci, Justine! I shop online a lot & at one time or another have experienced all the things you discuss here. I once ordered a hat & was sent (after a LONG wait) a completely different hat. I called the customer service number, & it turned out that the company was run by two elderly women who were very sweet. They had run out of the style I ordered, so they sent me something they thought I’d like. It was frustrating, but I couldn’t really get mad at them. I returned the hat. I agree that consumers should be able to see all sides of a garment on the product page, & customer service contact info should be conspicuous & easy to use. Shipping costs are important too, because that’s where online shoppers can get “punished” for buying online rather than in a store. Good video, as always!

I’m just gonna leave a like for now cause it’s time to go to bed. Knowing you, watching this video tommorow would be a refresh for my brain, a good way to start the day :)

Thank you for this video. I have made many mistakes ordering online and I'm much more careful now. It helps me to put things I like in my cart and then go back for a very close read and look at fabric, measurements, etc. When I'm in doubt, I usually pass on it now; however, I just had a wonderful experience with a company. Great topic! I'm a short curvy girl, and I look long and hard at every item I purchase, especially online! I also tend to stick to brands I've actually worn, so I know most of their sizing quirks.

I wanted to buy a gorgeous Rag and Bone wool dress, it had a leather strip attached to the back as a design detail. I assumed it was faux leather so that I could at least dry clean the dress, but it was real leather so the care instructions said it had to be taken to a leather cleaner in order to clean it. The dress fit perfect, but I couldn't buy it because it would probably cost me $50 to clean it, and my dry cleaner takes a month for leather. It's so annoying how designers design only for the garment to sell, but never for long term care. If more people learn about fabrics and how to care for them they can demand better from the industry. How many garments have we all thrown away after washing it? The industry needs to be taxed for landfill waste from their poor choices.

About the leather - I wanted to clean my husband's leather jacket and took it to the salon where the professional told me the cleaning damages the leather and should be only done if there are visible stains. I usually clean it gently with water to brush the dust and dry it before storing after the cold season is over.. In your case, you should wash the dress by hand, avoiding the leather detail, it sounds like a bother but if you absolutely love the dress and it fits you, why not?

There's plenty of leather cleaning products at shoe stores. They are used for taking care of shoes, bags, belts, leather jackets, ets.

These tips are very helpful. The laundry facilities that I have at my apartments aren't very good but knowing these tips will help me to take care of my clothes and gives me confidence to purchase well made garments, since I now know how to take care of them.

Thanks Justine. I've had very little success with shopping online, so I hardly ever do it. My most recent shopping fail was from a vintage reproduction store. I bought three items, a top, a pair of trousers, and a skirt, and had to return them all because of sizing issues. What I've learned from your video is to check for more specific measurements and ask if they aren't listed rather than just clicking "buy". Hopefully in the future I'll have better luck.

It’s very rare you can order clothes that fit online! I’ve had so many mistakes! Mostly because I’m big busted but then if I order a size thinking it will fit then it’s way too big everywhere else! You can’t go wrong with handbags or jewelry online though

I've had great success with clothes purchased from the online company Roman Fashion Designers. The clothes I've bought are usually jersey material, which I like. Dresses and tops have all suited me and I can now look at an item and know if the colour, cut, will suit me, thanks to Justine! Some dresses, which I've loved, are in a flattering shape for my body, but I've seen they would be much too long on me. I've taken them (4 in different colours) and had them professionally shortened for very little cost, and I was aware I'd need to do this on purchasing. Jackets /blazers are great quality, or at least the ones I've purchased have been, and lined well.

Thank you. This is going to really help me better choose my new duvet cover. I want a crisp white cover similar to the actual duvet but easier to wash and just realized after listening to your video that the covers I saved in my amazon account might not work. I do t know. I hadn’t done my due diligence and I’m really grateful for all of these suggestions: measurements, pattern, washing instructions and material fiber make up. Now I need to figure out how to choose best fabric for my bed so it looks smart and luxurious at the same time but is easy to fluff and clean. I’m thinking that $19 microfiber one would make my hot flashes intolerable.

Oh Justine, I hear you. I have the opposite situation to you; I have a very short torso and very long legs and arms. So although I am only 170 cms I have to buy skirts and tops from Long Tall Sally. One lives and learns. :] One tip of my own when buying from a online shop new to you is to read independent reviews of the site before parting with any money or giving them your credit card details. I learned that one the hard way......

I love online shopping but on clothes or shoes I still prefer trying them on before buying ;) thank you, your videos are very usefull

Thank You for this. So many people must know these informations. I learned the hard way to ALWAYS check te fabric (not only when shopping online). It may look pretty on the picture but the clothes are not only to look.
