    I love your content Dave, long time fan! I found this video a little bit too fast and not enough time to breathe between long/fast sentences… Personally I wouldn’t mind a slightly longer video with slower pacing, but I might be the minority! I am a Canon C70 owner, so appreciate and enjoy the content. A bit of subjective feedback and a question: maybe slow down pacing a bit and let your content “breathe”. I think the SFX edit stuff has a shelf life and will quickly date, your content is strong and you don’t need to do it. And a question: what happened to Indy Mogul?

    Nice to see you back, Dave! Enjoyed your conversation with Tyler Stalman a few weeks ago, too. For my personal taste, I thought the pacing on this vid was a bit too pressured. My ears needed a break by the end. But man, that's just me. You do your thing. I'm also a C70 owner/user, but I've got a more recent copy bought new in December, and the screen is definitely sturdier now. Still not as good as the R5 or R, though. I have to say, too, that I'm personally not that bothered by the S35 sensor. I thought I would be before I bought it, but I've gotten quite used to it, actually. In some ways, it's kind of nice that it gives me two focal lengths on my EF primes depending on which EF-RF adapter I use. I don't often need to shoot super wide angle, though. I do wish it had physical knobs for audio inputs 3/4 - that's annoying to me.

    I struggle a bunch with the face tracking in studio, but I chalk it up to low-ish light and shooting below f2.8 at 800. I don't remember stressing about auto focus with my 80D however, with the same lenses and lights. Still, I love the camera and wanna start playing with the Raw update, even though I probably have no practical reason to use it. Glad you're back.

    I bought 4 c70s over the last five months. Before buying the c70s I heard people complain about the lcd being flimsy and I rented a c70 and a bmpcc 6K pro and experienced the flimsy lcd first hand. I was really worried about it but when I got all four of my c70s they all had stiffer lcds that felt reinforced like the repaired one you described. I’m suspecting this may have been an issue near launch that Canon has since resolved on new c70s.

    I rented C70 for a project and yes, display durability made me sad. But I was surprised that canon added raw recording format and I can say that the image quality in raw is amazing. Especially dinamic range. Maybe C70 is more of an entry level cinema line, there for having FF EF lenses is actually good for me as a beginner filmmaker. And buying RF is more of a future proof investment as one day you will switch to C70 II with FF sensor 😁 I was surprised tho that it has no touch screen. VERY SURPRISED. And that you can't click to focus. 🤷🏼 Thanks for the video. 🙏🏼❤️

    Thank you for all these clear, concise points, good and bad on the C70. I'm still shooting with a C100 M2 because I just don't like the lack of EVF, and some of the feed back about the overall 4k image quality from users. The C100 gives awesome HD footage because of the downsizing from the 4K sensor - c'mon Canon why couldn't the C70 have a least a 6K sensor?!. I also agree - very hard to go back once you've had built-in ND's. A lot of great 4k cameras on the market right now - hard choices!

    The build quality issue I major for me as well. Having a rugged body just makes me feel a lot more comfortable using a camera in harsher environments. Apart from that it makes an investment in a camera system much more valuable if you can assume to use it for a long time. I'm feeling the same about my Canon R6 as well. Once you have handled a tank like a old 5D or even a R5 it's hard to go back 🥲

    I'm not quite there to buy a C70 but have been weighing some ideas since the R5C is going to be widely available by the time I start buying equipment. I think it would be great for real experienced film makers to do a side by side to know what we lose with the R5C as opposed to the C70 and what we gain. Clearly the R5C is also a reasonable stills camera as well so that's understood. The C70 is more video focused though.

    Dude, I'm super surprised at how cheaply made it is! I wanted the C70 to be a C100 Mark III and in a lot of ways it is and it's better. But the one thing I can't get over is that body. I really wish it was more reminiscent of the C100 shape, that body to me is still the best Cinema body. I love the fact that you can rotate the handle all around, the size of it as it's not monstrous (considering it's an EF mount Cinema camera), and just the overall ergonomics of it. I kind of hate that the C70 is a bigger SLR shape. But I understand the appeal, and it's much more manageable compared to the C300 Mark III and it truly is a monster of a camera! Side note, I have always loved your delivery no matter the length and speed of your videos! I like the pacing of this video and I think it's great for this particular subject.

    Great video, I think you nailed it. I purchased the C70 at launch, but ended up parting ways with it after my Red arrived. It’s a great camera, but as you noted, the build quality does not feel up to the $5500 price point. Also the images lacks resolution. I’ve come to believe that 6K is the perfect balance. Not being overly detailed whilst still offering some flexibility in post. I did a comparison some time ago on my channel looking at both the Canon C70 vs the Sony FX6. FYI: I think at present the best Canon hybrid is the Eos R3. Internal 6K RAW, best in class ISO performance… besting my FX6 and A7S3. And dynamic range that is on par with the C70’s DGO sensor. Canon knocked it out of the park with the R3.

    Odd I haven’t had the purple fringing issues with mine using the adapter, and considering my primary use for it is as a gimbal cam, the screen has been surprisingly sturdy - though I know of this danger and try to keep it in mind when having to flip it around all the time. My main gimbal lens is the 24-105 f4 L mk2, but I’m looking into a few other options so maybe the fringing will show up there. I’m not discounting your points, just haven’t had the same issues in my specific use case. That said, the canon speed booster is a must have for using this cam, and I have been annoyed from the start that new RF lenses are pretty much pointless for the price point since it’s a super 35 cam. I do believe we will be seeing RFs lenses in the near future though, and that only makes more sense as they further reduce their EF support.

    I could live with most of these problems (maybe not the poor quality LCD) but my main reason for not buying it is the mini XLR ports. I'm a full time filmmaker focused on ENG and corporate videos, so everything I do is based on interview. I use the Sennheiser AVX system for audio and I love how the receivers sit in the port on my C200 once plugged in. Mounting them on a rig and using adapters to mini ports is just too finicky for fast turnaround projects. I guess the C300 mk III would be the most logical upgrade from my C200 but it's _a lot_ more expensive than the C70 for almost the same performance, and I'd rather invest in the RF system than get a new EF-S mount camera.

    Everyone talks about how flimsy the screen is, and I’m looking at how cavalierly you’re flicking it in the opening moments of this video, and I dunno, either I got a good one or I’m not as hard on my cameras as everyone else. The screen is fine, it feels sturdy, the overall build of the C70 feels fine to me. Again, I’m not too hard on my equipment so maybe that’s what makes a difference, but I just had to say something since this runs counter to my experience. 🤷🏾‍♂️😅

    Has anyone had their C70 built in mic stop working? This happened to me a few days ago and the problem isn't anything obvious. I have it in normal recording with the built in mic set to on and the volume turned all the way up. I get nothing on the volume reader and when I bring the clips into post it's nothing but white noise. I'm not sure maybe this is a common issue with the camera? I tried resetting all my setting and it still doesn't work. The Line and Mic outputs still work fine.

I just wish canon would make their own version of the 18-35 f1.8 which is a beast and one of the best lenses ever made but as of today the af is slow and no IS compared to the 15-35.

    Dont know why people describe the C70 as a “workhorse”. The build quality is awful, and they said at the start it had weather sealing (it really really doesn’t). Long time canon user and I'm very frustrated with the C70. Feel like I made a purchase mistake. Got this a week ago and I am disappointed to say the least. The C300 MKIII is wonderful to work with but the C70 is just not holding up to be the camera I expected. I wish canon would make a firmware update with the focus tracking. Very frustrating how the button set up is as around the camera as well. I thought about going with the FX6 for low light and tracking features, but stuck with Canon due to experience with Canon Eco system. Agree it should have a 8K sensor for this price, plus the LCD is really a junk move for Canon. The hand strap gets in the way of changing cards and you have to remove it so you don't accidentally have your palm pressed against function buttons. Maybe I need more time with it, but feel like Canon dropped the ball for this price.

  • @connormccaskill

    @connormccaskill

    Жыл бұрын

    Well it’s an acquired taste to be honest. Try reconfiguring the button layout how you prefer and consider getting a monitor if you’re not satisfied with the LCD. Canon tried something new with the C70 and they may not try it again. It’s a cinema camera trapped in a 1DX body without the hybrid features at all. I personally have grown to love it but it’s not a traditional camera to say the least.
