Major Duolingo English Update July 2024 | Good Change or Bad Change?
Subscore Update: July 2024
Starting July 1st, 2024, the Duolingo English Test will include individual subscores for speaking, writing, reading, and listening, along with integrated subscores for literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production.
Research in applied linguistics shows that integrated subscores best reflect real-world language use, which often involves using multiple skills simultaneously, especially in academic settings. By combining individual and integrated subscores, institutions and admissions offices get a comprehensive view of a test taker's English proficiency.
Individual subscores are calculated based on test performance. The average of these subscores, rounded to the nearest 5, will be the overall score. Each integrated subscore is the average of the two individual subscores that make it up. For instance, the literacy subscore is an average of the reading and writing subscores.
Note that integrated subscores from before July 1st, 2024, are not directly comparable to those after the update, and converting old scores to the new format is not possible.
