    Bro, u had an alk swing. That's the only thing that wipes out corals over a wide range like that. Get your params dialed in with your doser rock solid then add some leathers,gsp, a Duncan some zoas if u can keep them happy move up

    Sorry to hear that bro. But i got the same experiences as yours, alk unstable, ranging 6-14, up and down without me adding anything. Turns out higher ca and mg caused buffering instability in our system that causes alk to fluctuates(i read somewhere in r2r). Little that i know the salinity that i checked using refractometer was not calibrated, and when i checked with the calibration solution, it registered as 1.030! Easy fix was to dilute our saltwater salinity to 1.026 with few cycles of waterchanges. Lessons learnt. Simple fix with cheap calibration solution that cause expensive coral dying! Oh btw, nutrients fluctuation wouldnt cause euphylia to die easily. Alk swing will do that!

  • @inventoryking

    In my opinion high nitrates and phosphates are more likely to cause algae rather than coral death. Of course once you have algae, the numbers will be low with the algae using it all up. With problems, ICP tests provide not only a "check" on your testing calibrations but also for other elements you do not check for normally.

    It shouldn't be the phosphate, I had phosphate above 1 at some point, yes, 1.0+. It was beyond what Hanna can measure. I have lowered it to 0.3+ for some time and now it's at 0.13ish. Except delicate SPS, everything was happy including monti.

    I would definitely recommend doing regular ICP tests (I do them quarterly, along with th trident testing daily and I manually test ALK, Phosphate and Nitrate once a week). The 50 bucks to send off some tests to get detailed lab analysis of your tank is worth it when the ramifications are losing thousands of dollars in coral. THe ICP test also will give you details on trace elements you may not have considered like Potassium. And if I were a betting man I would guess you were using Reef Crystals salt that has an 11 DKH and when the salt was high your Alkalinity was also high. Sorry for your loss and hope this helps with future corals.

    Hi you spoke about your salt and what i found was with Redsea salt the higher your salinity is the higher the KH will be .I found the sweet spot for Redsea salt is 1025 with a KH about 9 . Calcium about 420 to 440. Phosphates and nitrates as long as it’s stable you should not have and issue . Get stability in your tank and add cheap corals and monitor from there on. This is a life time hobby . I see to many reefers as fast they get in they get out . I always say add 1 to 2 corals every month then add a lot at 1 time . I’m in South Africa and do maintenance and setups of reef tanks . I even go as far as to quarantine my corals to make sure they have no pest at all . Perfect example 1 of my clients added some corals to his tank that had fluke on them and killed off all his fish . Corals all survived fish we tried everything just did not make it . Good luck to you and take it slow and don’t rush . You will get back stronger 💪.

I've had salinity levels from 1.020-1.028 over the years too with no side effects. I've had nitrate and phosphate spikes due to my chaeto going bad in my algae reactor but nothing has wiped my corals out like this!!? How long did everything take to die off? I think there's something more sinister going on there man..

  • @madlos123
    @madlos1232 жыл бұрын

    Either there's some chemical that got into the tank or leaching or there's something wrong with the salt your using. Malev's Reef had salt issues where his potassium was very low and he was loosing corals until he did an ICP test. Its probably best to do ICP test. I had salinity at 1.028 or 1.029 before (20 gal) using regular Instant Ocean and all my corals were fine for many months then I lowered it down back to normal once I knew the results. (I was testing if higher salinity helps with coral growth). I had nitrates of 40 ppm and phosphates at 0.5 ppm to 1 ppm with no issues. I had 15 dkh and 500 ppm calcium for a while when using Reef Crystals but I found that if your levels are that high you need higher nitrates and phosphates so that your corals do not shrink. Yet none of my corals died.

    I'm curious where your magnesium and pH sit. Your phosphate and salinity didn't sound horrible to me. Also temperature and lighting (do you have a par meter?) can be a factor here. Those scolys are southern GBR where they can experience temperature into the 60's. I see others have mentioned a bad batch of salt, but, as easy as it would be to just point the finger at the salt, I would be very sceptical of that. I'm sorry this happened to you, these animals are very fragile. I've had losses, but nothing like this. My heart hurts for you, and I sincerely hope you figure out the real source of your trouble. @@erasetoys1489 I think in this hobby it does not matter your gonna loose an animal. Hermit crabs eat each other for shells even if you add extra shells. Hermit crabs kill snails you want for cleaning. Fish kill each other because of territories and this develops fin rot which is a disease that kills all the fish. This is not for an everyday person to own. I own one of these and I am fighting daily to keep everyone happy and alive. Its hard to do it.

    i had similar situtaion but worst, i spent 2 days away, came back to all my fish with ich, on a 125g, lost half of live stock on those 2 days, due to all my fish with ich i couldnt catch them all i ended up taking every coral out of my tank and dosing with what the store owner said it was copper, turned out it was a medic aid to get rid of worms, so all my corals died 5 acros green bubble tip and couple sps, to then find out i didnt need to remove them cuz it wasnt copper, and they died cuz no lfs wanted to keep them for me, so while i thought i was treating ich i didnt cuz they sold me the wrong thing, i lost tangs royal gramma 6 year old clownfish that was 4 inches anthies coral beauties, just insane, my gonipora survived after i put it back in the tank and my pikachu also recuperating i cant tell, my monti died, now im sitting with a gonipora pikachu and one of those sps that grow like montis, 2 domino damsels(glad they still alive cuz they were my first fish) 1 clownfish who i think is gonna be dead tomorrow when i wake up, and my 3 chromies glad as well, cuz its hard to get chromies to not die when you first add them in, so here am i, starting over again, just waiting the ich out kill who is gonna kill and see from there, im not giving up tho for sure

    PO4 didn't do in your tank. It's just like you said --> STABILITY that's what did your tank in, rather INSTABILITY. I'm having the same issues before I started dosing Kalk, now I'm having nutrient instability and the culprit seems to be PO4! So next I plan on starting an algae reactor and adding phyto and copepods for biodiversity. Hang in there as this is such an amazing hobby! In my own research I found that kalk will aid in precipitating certain unwanteds like PO4 out of the water column, but to completely remove it you must vacuum your sand bed. Also, calcium will read high and is offset by certain heavy metals like Aluminum so I would send out an ICP test. Not sure if it offsets Mg, or Alk, but Ca it will.

    Your phos levels had zero to do with why your coral died. It will lean towards algae growth is all, mine are over 1.0 on phos. Nitrate is about 10. I am betting your salinity was to high. High alk will take out coral's.

    Let me just give you one piece of advice. Dont ever, EVER buy and put in so many new corals all at once. You are still learning and a few months is not enough to judge whether or not you are ready for thousands of $ worth of sensitive corals. Yes they look pretty when you put them in, that goes downhill real fast. I can tell by your coralline algae, your tank is still rather new. My rocks are literally pink from it and they are only two years old. Patience is a hard lesson in reefing, and if you dont have money to burn just go back to freshwater and stick with fish only.

    This is so common these days. Buy thousands and thousands dollars worth of equipment , kill everything and get out of the hobby. This hobby has become more about equipment keeping rather then healthy fish and corals. Back in the days people were keeping beautiful tanks without all these garbage equipments that will wipe out a tank. People definitely didn't get dummer so it must be all these complicated machines that you don't need is making it harder and harder for the average hobbyist to succeed.
