Did you see how Paterno showed class by still giving the kicker a pat on the butt to encourage him? He was one of my favorite coaches way back when. In the 70s Iowa scheduled tough non-conference teams instead of patsies at Iowa City to pad their record.

Part of the reason was due to not being eligible to go to a bowl game unless you won the Big 10. Prior to 1975 only the Big 10 Champion could go to a bowl game. Starting in 1975 other Big 10 teams could go to bowl games but in general it was only 2 or 3 schools that got bids(including the Big 10 champion)

This was one of the weaker PSU teams of the 1970s and 80s, but it's still amazing that Iowa won considering how bad Iowa was between Evy and Fry.

Yes, pretty crazy for Iowa to win there on the road, even with a weaker PSU team

Wow! This was a shock. So glad you had the videotape to share. This is incredible footage. I remember the highlights that day. Of course, I never expected Iowa to win. I didn't even know it was on TV. Was it national broadcast?

I'm not sure if it was national or not, maybe someone else has some info on that. It could have been regional, since it had their announcers

Those were great days before Coach Paterno got dragged into that scandal. I feel so sorry for him. Wished he had gotten out before all that crap happened at Penn State. He deserved better.

He did seem like a great coach, but it seems he didn't take action when he found out what was going on

@@brionhurley Lifelong Pennsylvanian here. The Attorney General of this state publicly said Paterno did what he was supposed to do. Additionally, I invite everyone to keep an open mind about the entire story because let me tell you, NO STATE has a more corrupt judiciary than Pennsylvania. Mark Prendergrast's (spelling?) book is worthy reading.
