I had the good fortune to listen to him from 1954 - 58 when I was studying in BHU as chemical engineering student and he was Principal of Music College. I was engineering student and music school used to start at 6pm with a Bhajan fromPanditji .We four engineering students enrolled as students primarily to listen to him and other programs as eminent musician s used to come because of him.I had good luck to listen to him at other places also.,

I envy your luck

I was unlucky to be born to late to listen to this legend. But lucky to listen to this quality of hindustani classical because of my father's interest and taste in music

This great rendition from Panditji was in Prayag Sangeet Samiti Hall during a Music Conference at Allahabad most probably during the year 1959 or 1960. I was listeningn to this performance live in the hall with my late mother who was a student and disciple of Panditji in BHU Music College where my mother was during BA Music. This was a mesmerizing performance by Panditji assisted by his favourite blind disciple Shri Bhatt. After the performance my mother went up to the stage to meet her guru. Panditji immediately recognised her and hugging her started crying with overflowing emotions as she reminded him of her grandfather Mahamana Malaviyaji. The memory of this immortal devine performance is firmly etched in my memory.पंडित जी की पावन स्मृति को कोटि -कोटि नमन और प्रणाम!!!

Even after decades of listening to this great rendition of Surdasji's bhajan, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes! Such is the depth of devotion (bhakti) displayed by Panditji here!

पंडितजी की याद तो बचपन से ही साथ है। 7वें दशक में आकाशवाणी पर सुबह एक प्रोग्राम आता था "ब्रजमाधुरी " के नाम से। बस जिस सुबह पंडित जी का गाया ये भजन आ जाता था बस वो सुबह तो क्या दिन बन जाता था। खटिया में सोये सोये सुन ने का आनन्द ही कुछ और ही होता था।

While teaching this, my Hindi teacher said that it could also be interpreted as "Maine hi makhan khayo" :)

Your teacher was absolutely wrong.Bal Krishna was caught red handed butter on his lips and he was defending himself. A defending fellow can't say " Maine hi makhan khayo ".

Absolutely that is the right version. A word play on mai nahi and maine hi 😊 by the great poet surdas. The lord subtly declares that he has only eaten the butter while trying to cloak it with the antithetical argument that he hasn’t. There is a great philosophy revealed through this subtle declaration that the commentators have expressed. Fools should stop commenting on every random thing they see on youtube about which they don’t have an iota of understanding

Last line !!! I just laugh with a tears in my eyes ! That much we love Krishna and of course the presentation of panditji. That's power of music of pnaditji and persona of Krishna and worship of surdas made us both laugh and cry together !!!

मैंने 1961 में पंडितजी को बनारस में माँ आनंदमयी आश्रम में एक समारोह में सुना था. प्रत्यक्ष देखा था और सुना था.कितना मदहोश कर देने वाले गायन था. 60 साल से यह आवाज, वह सूरत दिमाग़ में घूमती रहती है.

My mother Sudha Gupta has learnt music from pt ji during her college days at women's college BHU. Her father lt sri birendra gupta was then university engineer.He served BHU for over three decades.

Aaj. Panditji ka yeh bhajan sun ke bachpan me kho gaye. All India Radio par subah ek programme aata tha Brij Madhuri. Jisme jis din Panditji ke iss bhajan ka prasarn hota tha Wo subah. Safal ho jati thi. Khatiya me pade pade sunne ka anand aaj bhi dil me basa hai.. Dhanyawad

I had heard this with my grand-father 50 yrs ago.I heard this classical bhajan again yesterday with same interest.Panditji is at his best.Wonderful voice.Same holiness.Pious person.

One of the most beautiful immortal song Bhajan of late Pandit Omkar Nath Thakur of those days, when hearing such melodies was possible in Music conferences only where few privileged people used to get this opportunity to listen to such unforgettable melody of voice and singing. When internet, mobile, TV and other modern methods of entertainments were not even heard of and even Radio was not that common.
