This tune for Mairi's Wedding was composed by John Bannerman (d.1938) to his own Gaelic text. The English words were written by Hugh Roberton (d.1952).

That's my middle name given to me by my Scottish parents and while I still lived in Scotland. (Now a Canadian!) It is now the name of my fourth child...Mairi Rathy! Great Gaeilic name.

Congratulations, you are my fellow Ulster Scot. They used to call themselves Scots Irish. Quite a few of the USA founding fathers were also 'Scots Irish'.

The third line of the chorus is “Arm and arm and row and row”. Slightly puzzling but there it is.

Should read "row in row" Similarly "shillings" should read "shielings" i.e. hamlet/village.

I remember year ago my uncle sang this but with a verse " my mother said if i would play with the gypsies in the wood" is this right or did he make it up ?

  • @EquineRose-Rosie-

I am guessing he made it up, as I have not seen any version of this song with that verse, nor do I see where that lyric could fit in, though I am curious which part of the song he put that lyric in, would you mind sharing that? However, there is a song called 'My Mother Said I never should' which has a lyric almost exactly like that, perhaps he had sung a bit of that? Here is that song if you wish to listen :D kzread.info/dash/bejne/laR1zbqneM_In7g.html

It is often sung by the Irish folk groups, the "Chieftans" sang it and then did it with Van Hallen, not my favourite rendition. But then a lot of the Irish songs are sung by Scottish groups. But it is originally form the Hebrides. It was translated by Sir Hugh Roberton into English form Scottish gaelic. It is a beautiful song none the less
