Mahua - Madhuca indica खजुराहो
In rural India, Mahua is a lifeline for poor people.
Scientific Name: Madhuca indica
Family: Sapotaceae
Description: Large deciduous tree reaching a height up to 20m with a rounded crown and straight trunk. Leaves large broadly elliptic 12-20cm long. Flowers small, whitish scented, in dense clusters near the end of the branches. Fruits ovoid, 4-5 cm long, greenish, fleshy; seeds 1-2, 1.5- 3.5 cm long.
Growth and Flowering: It is a fairly fast growing tree. The leaves fall off in February-March and new light green leaves emerge after the appearance of flowers in March-April. Fruits ripen in June-July.
Uses: It is used for timber, flowers and fruits. The fleshy petals are eaten as raw or cooked and country spirit is made from flowers which are a favorite drink of tribal people in tropical and subtropical India. The oil extracted from seeds is used in cooking, soap making and manufacture of margarine. The tree has many medicinal uses. Mahua cake is used as manure; it has pesticidal properties.
