I watched this and all the other old, "original" Japanese anime when I was a child living in Japan around 1971 (my mother is from Nagano). Minashigo Hatchi, Hakushon Daimou, Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro, and shows like Kamen Rider and Ultraman, and more. When we moved to the states I was teased in grade school when I brought all of my anime theme song 45 records to show and tell. I was lucky in the 80's we had a Japanese video shop locally where I could rent VHS tapes bootlegged or brought from Japan. Now I'm 47 and I still watch anime. When I wear my anime t-shirts, I get super pissed when people (mostly kids) point at my shirt and ask me, "Do you know what that is on your shirt?" B**ch, I've been watching anime for 45 f***ing years, you don't even know the half of it." I don't actually say that, but I want to.

That's all very interesting. I've played collected quite a few older anime themes & played them to my Japanese friends to see if the knew them, some of the really old ones they didn't know, but most of the ones from the 1980s onward they remembered, & one of them was impressed I had the theme to Dr Slump, which she never expected to hear outside Japan!

@@anirudhsukigakirei9397 Actually, several European countries did show shojo before Sailor Moon. In fact, Sally was shown in France and Italy. It was just America that seemed to ignore the market.

I'm honestly surprised this wasn't one of those 60s anime that made it to America alongside Astroboy, Kimba, Gigantor and Speed Racer. It seems tailor made for western tastes of the time and there's nothing really "Japanese" about it. Did they think that a show aimed at girls wouldn't sell?

@@anirudhsukigakirei9397 Actually, several European countries did show shojo before Sailor Moon. In fact, Sally was shown in France and Italy. It was just America that seemed to ignore the market. In fact I can't think of an American TV cartoon with a female protagonist (excluding Disney and Betty Boop) before Josie and the Pussycats and Penelope Pitstop. Apparently Princess Knight almost came over here in the early 70s but NBC said no because of the gender bender themes, though it did get shown on some local stations.
