Mahogany Half Fretless Banjo - Cumberland Gap

Eden and I just finished building this Mahogany and ebony half fretless banjo!
This banjo sports a 12 inch pot with a rolled brass ring and brass hardware. It has a curved scoop with mahogany and ebony pinstriping down the side of the fret board. This was a fun banjo to build and even more fun to play!
Here's a little Cumberland Gap.

This is exactly why chosen ears are drawn to the banjo, where it shakes off its unfair reputation and whispers so melodic.

Beautiful banjo - and one of the most beautiful banjo performances I've heard. Very intimate. Very subtle.

Beautiful. I'm just getting started learning with my brand new Deering Goodtime 12". I haven't even had a lesson yet, just watching videos, and trying stuff, building up dexterity. Years of Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu, and Ironwork has left me with not much dexterity, but I'm stoked seeing the little improvements here and there. So, I can't even do bum ditty in steady rhythm, and strike the string I intend to with regularity, and I want to buy more banjos! I want a fretless, one with wider fretboard for my sausage fingers, an old timey with nylon strings, one with a resonator dish, and now I find out there is a half fretless banjo?!!! That thing is just beautiful. Made with love and pride.

I am into banjo playing and listening say a week or so. Not sure how I did not see this all these 50 years. don't see the point of half fretless but the sound was addictive. Bravo!

Became a subscriber. My Weymann 1917 pot and the brackets looks so much like yours. The neck is beautiful. I like my low notes and your higher notes. Nice tone. Ozark Mountains? ... you got your work cut out for you ... so to speak. Lot’s of good players there, I’m sure. By golly. Thanks for the tune. Needed it during West Indian Carnival sounds for a week.

I like to hear the pukka- pukka stuff once and a while. It is more pleasant than the do- wacka stuff.

I found your tab of this song online and it is so much fun to play. I have a question though; How do you get your middle string to sound so good? When I tune way down to the suggested tuning, it doesn't sound very good. I'm playing on a pretty nice banjo (Enoch Tradesman)

There is a lot more involved in the sound of a banjo than just what kind of tone ring it has. Believe me I had to learn the hard way and it was an expensive education. This guy has a lot more expertise in the matter as he is a part of a truly living tradition.

The Ozark Banjo Co. by Lukas & Eden Pool no kidding! It has such a warm/dark sound for steel on brass.

I wish I still had it around the house, unfortunately not many people order half-fretless. It's a commitment.
