Fyi it really isn't because MC is dense. FOR LN readers who know his background, he does have a legitimate reason. Spoiler His trusted childhood friend turned out to only used him for his $ and would talk bad about him behind his back. Due to this experience, he lost "faith" in ppl that he hasn't personally spent time with. Worse still, the experience shook his self-confidence so much so that even when he knows the ppl (her) around him are good ppl, he still can't bring himself to call them an equal (as in his own opinion, he is inferior) Aka he has trust isues & inferiority complex.
