Fun fact, the reason people who are starving for a bit smell like nail polish remover is that they're literally exhaling it. Their body is in a state of ketosis, which means that the person is breathing out ketones... which includes acetone. Acetone in very small concentrations also smells like pears. From experience, this means that the person starving has a horrible sweet taste in their mouth that they can't wash out.

@@asquirreltv i mean it would, but I think he'd just say that ace people are lying about not feeling it at all. though how he would square the whole affair with his exaltation of celibacy would be fascinating. like on one hand ace people's inherent ability to abstain would be a praiseworthy thing to him, right, but if it's not an effort then how would he square that, like either he denies it, but then he would have to square his denial of ace ppls own words with the fact of their supposed purity and power due to perceived celibacy and if he doesn't deny being ace as real then what does that make ace ppl, i guess semi divine or something like that, it depends on how much his feelings on celibacy rely on it being a struggle.

This reminds me of the attitude of conservative Christians who preach celibacy. It's only virtuous if you're actively resisting temptation. If lack of attraction is your natural inclination, then that doesn't count, and in fact, they will harshly judge you for doing other things with your life. That's because celibacy only applies to extramarital relations. Once you're married, you're supposed to have as much of it as possible for the purpose of procreation, and anyone who does otherwise is sinful.

More context on the shitty Holocaust quote: suicide is a considered a sin in Judaism. It's a bad enough sin that groups of Jews, when faced with a situation where suicide is the only possible course of action, will go out of their way to kill each other rather than themselves. So in addition to being wrong and offensive, the quote is also incredibly sacrilegious.

I... wonder if he was thinking of the Balinese nobility? When the British invaded, the aristocrats of Bali responded by committing extravagant, ritualized mass suicide in front of the British soldiery - what reminded me of this is a specific description of one group who danced, singing, off the edge of a cliff in full view of the advancing British. The thing is, that was a specific cultural element of Bali's nobility, not a strategic move. Their goal wasn't to arouse sympathy, it was to deny their conquerors any sense of victory and die with their own dignity intact. The idea that such a display should be done as some kind of "pragmatic" diplomatic ploy is deeply, deeply perverse. Of course, I don't know where Bali is relative to India, and thus whether Gandhi would have ever heard of the ritual suicides - much less whether he would have cared or whether he'd have found some reason to dismiss them.

To answer the one question about the cliff quote, yeah, he thought he was throwing himself off the cliff, so to speak, hence starving himself and letting himself become a target. It's still fucked up to demand of others, but choosing to, for example, self immolate when your death is certain otherwise has a long history as a form of protest in India.

This was an episode I've been interested in hearing, because despite being in my forties, the ONLY thing I knew about Gandhi was his writing on pacifism. So, this is all new information for me, and I'm always grateful to be educated. Even when it's awful. The thing about cutting off the hair. I'm assuming long hair was the norm for young girls there, which makes cutting their hair off the equivalent of making them wear a Scarlet A on their chests. That book was supposed to be fiction. :(

So around 20:20 when you raise the point of gandhi being racist to black people and thought indians were "on the same level" as white people, I'd like to clarify something you guys missed: you specifically brought up how Gandhi said that indians are more like white europeans because according to him, they're both part of the ar**n race (like h*tler would say). When he says that, he does specifically mean upper caste indians like him. There's this casteist factoid that right wing hindu extremists often bring up and it follows the same logic of racism: they believe that upper caste people are genetically closer to white people but black people and non-upper caste (dalit, bahujan, and adivasi) people are not. Gandhi, when he "fought for the rights" of untouchables in India did not fight for their liberation from casteism. He wanted them to literally find acceptance in cleaning the sh*t of upper caste people. He was racist and casteist and has always wanted social elevation for upper caste men like himself
