The surname of Marati is ``Naika`` and they speak a common tribal dialect Marati which does not have any script and different from marathi language.
The ‘Marati’ community is distributed in the Hosdurg and Kasaragod Taluks of Kasaragode Dist. of Kerala. Their counter parts in Karnataka are found in Dakshina Kannada Dist, which is situated in the adjoining part of Kasaragod district. Before 1956, the whole area was known with a single name, ‘ South Canara’ under Madras State.
