King Narasimha Pallava was a very proficient wrestler and one of his titles was "Maamallaa" - Great wrestler. He was a very big patron of this then port town, and some say the place was named Maamallapuram in his honour.

Pallavas made seven pagodas,out which only one available. Remaining six under the sea due encroachment of the sea. Swimming is banned due to current in the sea..
