Magpul PMAG 12 review: My Gen 5 Glock 26 hates them

I put some Pmag 12's in my Gen 5 Glock 26. Things didn't go as planned.

Someone may have already suggested this, so forgive me if so. Rather than writing these mags off and making a declarative statement that some folks might take for gospel why not go to Magpul and work with them to resolve the issue? This is what helps make the industry get better. Just a thought. Great respect for you and your service.

Lyle, I appreciate the input. I called Magpul, and they stated that they have seen it before in certain instances and attributed it to tolerance stacking. They advised I should file down one corner of the magazine body and then bend the slide lock tab on my gun. They were nice about it and offered to replace the magazines if the DIY mods didn't work. That said, I still won't have confidence in them enough to carry them and it appears the entire body is probably due for a redesign.

@@lylecaudill1446 I'm not going to complain, brother. I had a mag that would drop free from Glock once out of the box (deformed polymer) and Glock told me "we don't state anywhere that our mags will absolutely drop free" and refused to do anything at all 🙄😂 But yeah, I'm not real pumped to trust my life to some home filed magazines.

I, too, called them about these mags. I bought them after seeing a similar vid about these mags not working with gen 5 g26 models. So, I knew what I was getting into. They're fine for range practice, if you're shooting slow. However, the very first double-tap drill I ran, failure to feed/slide locked back with 10 rounds left in the mag. I contacted Magpul and they replaced the mag, but the same issue happened again. At this point its a definite design flaw for gen 5's. I believe it's due to the dual slide release interfering with the magazine? Anyway, I told the rep at magpul that it should Really be redesigned because I LOVE the mags themselves, just wish they would work reliably for self defense situations

I have a Gen 5 and Gen 4, in the Gen 4 they work just fine with no issues with 250 rounds in so far, however the Gen 5 locks open about every 4-5 rounds. I would tend to agree the ambi slide stop has a great influence on the function of this mag. Hope there is a redesign in the near future as I really like the Pmags.

Glad that I caught this video. I had a Glock 26gen4 and had bought two of the g12 Magpul magazines and they worked good in it, disclaimer here, I didn't shoot many rounds through them and never carried the 26 with them in it. I ended up trading the gen4 and regretted it shortly afterwards. I just picked up a gen5 26 ,so thanks for the heads up. I'll just get the plus two extensions. 👍👍

Thanks for the review Jay, and heads up of course. My experience is that I decided to Frankenstein my 19 into a 45 and ended up getting a PMAG 17 for only about 15 bucks. I suppose, largely based on them working perfectly in my AR. So while I should have done my homework before purchasing, I then realized some of the early PMAG 17's were problematic. Did more research, and checked the lot number that specified the manufacturer date, and apparently mine were okay....supposedly. BUT, to your point re: detrimental consequences when one really doesn't need them, I've since gotten a Glock 17 factory mag carry purposes. Ironically, haven't had any problems whatsoever with the PMAG 17.....eats up 115, 124, and 147 Gr. just fine, never a hiccup. It will, however, remain a range mag. Thanks again.....look forward to your next videos. We appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experiences.

Good video and thanks for sharing some important info. I prefer the unmodified 10 round Glock magazines because, for concealment purposes, the butt of the gun doesn't stick out so much. I do use original G17 magazines as my spares, and I have never had any problems using them in my G26. After watching this, I checked out my (Glock) magazines, and sure enough there was virtually no wiggle room for the bullets. If I buy off brand replacement magazines, I will be aware of how snug the ammo fits. Well done.

Great vid about your magpul issue. I noticed the same wobble with any extended mag I used so a friend offered a solution and it seemed to work, I pick up a grip frame insert from pierce grips, it fills the space or cavity in the heel of the grip body allowing a more snug fit. Might help.

**The issue I have may be specific to the Gen 5 model. As you know, the slide release on this model is ambidextrous and designed slightly differently than earlier models. The spring for the slide catch and overall tension is also different than earlier models. It seems some people are getting these to work on earlier models without issue, but my Gen 5 hates. these.mags.

I was actually going to suggest something specific to the Gen 5. I have a Gen 3 and have run over 2,000 rounds through 3 Pmags and have zero FTF or FTEs. It's my go to carry mag. I also clean the mags every 500 rounds so maybe that has helped, but I'm 100% satisfied with the Pmags. Just my experience.

I have one of these for a gen 4 26. I had a few falures to return to battery early on. I think the springs are very stiff and they slowed down the slide velocity from increased pressure. I cycled the spring a bunch with a mag loader and I havent had any problems since. Never any problems associated with slide lock.

I haven't had a single issue with 12,15, 17, or 27 round pmags in any of my glocks, gen 3 and 4 Glock 26's. gen 3 and 4 Glock 19's, gen 3 and 4 Glock 17's. I just haven't had any problems and I shoot the heck out of all six pistols as I shoot a lot with my four kids at our back forty outdoor range. Is this a Gen 5 type problem? I am glad you had the sense to test and understand your equipment to mitigate any issues. We can all learn from that.

I think those were in the magpul mags. Not sure if it's partly because they are not metal lined and don't feed as cleanly? Second range visit I put the magpul mags aside and only use Glock mags. 200 rnds speer lawman, no problems. 50 rnds of the 115grn Blazer Brass, one failure on the last rnd of a well used 1992 gen2 glock mag. I hear that pinky pressure on mags that stick out can be a problem. Third range visit I did 100 more Speer Lawman in Glock mags, no problem. 50 Blazer Brass 115grn, my brother had 1 failure w/ the 17 rnd Gen2 mag. (pinky pressure?) Conclusions so far: I think w/ full power loads ( not soft loaded plinking range fodder) I'm good to go. I've only experienced failures w/ the softer Blazer Brass 115grn. And only in my old Gen2 17rnd mag I had w/ me and the magpul mags, but I'm not 100% certain. It seems to trend that way. So after a few more hundred full power Speer Lawman, I should try the magpuls again w/ speer lawman and then Blazer Brass to see what happens. It's now on my to-do list.

I own a glock 26. I shoot my g26 just like my glock 19. So I'm going ask some questions. But before that I have some things to get out of the way: I personally never understood why anyone needs that extra pinky extension unless it was a drawer gun, and maybe if you wore a hoodie/winter coat. Range day I like having extra mags regardless of quality. If anything I like garbage quality mags because that means I get reps in. So I use pmags, clear plastic mags, and some extended mags. But for serious defensive use I stick with oem. Drawing the gun I can also see the use of at least the pinky extension, but I never understood the whole "better control of the gun" argument. I get the same groupings if not better with my g26 as my g19 without any extended baseplates or mag sleeves, just the base 10 round mags. Now for those questions.. The whole point of the gun is that it's easier to conceal. So why get a +2 extension and make the gun print more? At the rate you're going, I think you should use a glock 19 mag. It gets a whole +5 rounds. And if you're using a g19 mag and destroying the concealability, then why not just use a glock 19? If you're using a +2 extension, you're basically just running a regular compact handgun. If you want that "extra 'control' of the gun that the pinky extension gives you" then just run a glock 19.

  • @danielspofford3696

I’m guessing here but I’d say he dies it because the plus two does not print nearly as much as a 19 mag and still gives you a couple extra rounds while still being extremely concealable.

Alfredo Bodden these mags are made as 12 rounds and the baseplate is the same size as a standard Glock mag but the design is not the same as glocks... the come off easier but they don’t have the tabs on the side like Glock mags do.

Magpul has stated they are not meant for use with the gen-5 G26 because of this specific issue.

Magpul says this 12 round magazines is for the Gen 3 & 4. Not the Gen 5. Mine work flawlessly in Gen 3/4 G26’s.

I’ve had same problems with them trying to feed 2 rounds in at once I guess a double feed anyway I’m not a fan of any PMAGS seems like the only people that like them are people who own them !

I use their rifle mags on duty without hesitation. Their Glock mags just don't seem to be up to the standard of factory mags.

J Helmsing yes, AR15 PMAGS are the real deal as I have several with a combined thousands of rounds through them that work extremely well. Interesting nobody can make a Glock mag that’s as reliable a Glock mag, seems like somebody would have figured out a way to do this by now considering how long glock has been a popular pistol.

I own a gen 5 g26 and three of these 12 rd pmags. No issues yet and it does get fired every sunday at my favorite range and I carry it in warmer weather. All of my factory 26 mags have OEM factory plus 2 baseplates on them and to be honest, the pmags wobble less than the factory ones. It may be a QC issue and I just got lucky.

Good info, thanks for sharing. Too bad your's didn't work well. I'm not a fan of torture testing guns or equipment but this mag was so inexpensive I went ahead and beat one up (video link below if interested). I left the mag loaded in my truck on a hot summer day then took it to the range and threw it, stomped on it and ran it over with my truck. I was surprised it held up so well and it's still running perfectly through about 400 rounds in my Gen 3. Torture Test Video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3Wty85-dpqtiqQ.html
