Magnum's Master of Color Photography

Harry Gruyaert has been one of my favorite color photographers for a long time. His life and work really makes you love color photography, but also helps you to decide when to think outside of the box and when to stay in.

Happened to me too. Don't upgrade OS during an edit. I lost all my peripherals, Wacom etc when I went from El Cap to Sierra. A ton of lost money. Wacom was extremely cruel, not upgrading drivers.

I upgraded to Catalina and suddenly Final Cut started crashing during longer rendering. It was extremely annoying since I had to render the final version like 5 times. And it take quite some time on my Macbook pro 2012 😀

I learned a lot from your analysis of Gruyaert's photos. I've been a painter for 50+ years and have just recently renewed my interest in photography. Your comments about limiting choices spoke to me. I decided 10 years ago to severely limit the material choices in my paintings...the same size and format 4.5' X 6.5" same palette Pelikan Opaque Watercolors. This decision came after watching a documentary about an 80-year-old Japanese sushi master, "Jiro Dreams of Sushi". He gained mastery through the repetition of the same sushi dishes. Now people come from all over the world to eat at his little store-front restaurant. Limiting your choices can become a powerful means to achieve mastery.

Great video! I had never heard of him before, but totally loved the color photos you showed. And I like that he doesn't do only one thing. Like you I have struggled to find a style; people are interesting to photograph, but I love landscapes, night photography has its own artistry, and then there's the excitement of city life. I've never been able to settle on one and only one style, and now I don't feel like I have to. Also like you, I wanted to be a garbageman when I grew up. Then our garbagemen let me ride on the outside of the garbage truck. OMG, it stank soooooo badly!! That totally cured my desire to be a garbageman!

  • @aboutphotography

    @aboutphotography

Haha so in the end good for me it didn’t work out with the garbage truck 😂 Night and astro photography are little too technical for me. Like I have to relearn it every time and I always forget it later. Also with making exposures over night (sometimes like 300-600 frames) the trial and error can be time consuming 😂 I am happy you enjoyed the video. Looking forward to see you around!

One of my favourite photographers. Happy to have discovered your wonderful channel. I actually think the music and images along with your narration work very well together. I also completely understand your dilemma about Colour vs Black & White and the complications sometimes when using digital cameras. I often wonder whether I'd be better off going back to film but then I'd probably miss the convenience of the digital workflow. I have recently been reviewing my images from the past 30 years and when I look at my work when I was using film cameras I feel nostalgic but I can't imagine setting up a darkroom again!

Thank you! I am happy you like it! I am also often thinking about film. But I would let it develop a study or photography shop. But then, isn't it the part of the magic to develop it yourself. It is on my wishlist but it will probably take while before I do that. I think in the end you are probably able to see the scene and realise if that would be better black and white or color. But can you actually master both at once? hmm.. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for showing the photography works of Harry Gruyaert - Boy was I wrong being born in a digital era in which I am 64, and I miss shooting film. I love in what you said in your closing Comment as you said: " Focus on thing but slowly, and surely, and maybe you just like me maybe will realize that sometimes will last is more. And Harry did it the simple logic way in seeing color. Is not the fancy cameras that they photo companies are offering with all the bells, and whistles, as it is your creative mind to create an image, and it is also in what you have to create, and record an Image. I do not have the Super Gear, and I am not going to spend $$$$$ thousands of Dollars, Yen, Euros Pounds for a lens or a camera that I already have, and more that can do with it. Why do people cannot see that? Thank You - You made my day.

I'm starting to do a photography course for beginners (just finishing the pilot group) and I'm compiling a list of good sources of information to give the participants. I just wrote that it's hard to recommend any KZread-channels since they're mainly marketing materials for the commercial pro photographers and their view/sub based personal economy. Then I remembered seeing a video on Fan Ho that I really appreciated. Luckily I found it and I started to look at your other videos. Now I have a channel I can happily recommend. You do beautiful work with these. Your amount of subscribers is for some reason missing a zero or two, but I'm sure with time that will change. Thanks for the hard work! Can anyone recommend some photography channels of similar quality?

I ponder whether great photogs like Mr Gruyaert, Saul Leiter etc ever regretted moving from film, where they used those tools to produce/enjoy such magnificent work, to digital. Great stuff. I really wanted to be a taxi driver when I was a kid, owing to seeing Kermit the Frog drive a taxi in Muppets Take Manhattan. It had to be a yellow taxi though. I really enjoyed that. A great breakdown of his images and a little history about the man himself. Your explanation as to the different ways he uses colour in his images was excellent, and the highlight to me. I enjoyed the visually inventive editing and everything flowed very nicely. My only criticism would be that sometimes you went a little too far in playing with the subtitles - mainly when you rotated them. it was a bit jarring and tricky to read, though it looked cool. I'd keep the subtitles simple except for when you really want to draw attention to a key statement and then punch with them. But apart from that your style just seems to be getting better and better, and your earnestness and love for photography always comes across so well. Thank you for the links in the description too! I've got Harry Gruyaert's East / West collection, I think I'll have another look at them this lunchtime. All the best!

I am also thinking about dedicating a whole video to color principles since I find it not only interesting but also important. However I feel like my current knowledge is not deep enough right now. But I got a few books about this topic to study it more deeply and then I will probably do it.

Very interesting content, well made. In German I call myself "Buntfotograf" (hard to translate, maybe "gaudy color photographer", but it doesn't work as well, connotations are different) - whenever I go B&W, I think "Heck, I should colorize this …" (I actually did once, using Photoshop, and it was a lot of work), and only on few occasions I really like a B&W image I've taken. Harry Gruyaert is a master, and now I have a face to put to some of the pictures I've actually seen before but had no idea. As a side-note: HCB, one of the founders of Magnum, had studied painting (and returned to drawing after his photography career), so he had an arts background too - I wonder why HG was controversial …

I always thought BW looks more artistic which is funny since reportage used to be all in BW and color film was not used that much. Now when everything is in color BW seems to be more appealing. But you definitely lose something when you leave colors out.

@@aboutphotography I admire well made B&W photography (Ansel Adams, anyone? ;-)), but I'm primarily drawn to color. The funny thing is: I'm a fan of B&W infrared photography (thinking about it - this is where I actually enjoy shooting B&W), and there I don't miss colors at all! Maybe I should have a new look on B&W and color …

As always, a strong video showcasing an interesting artist and his images. I look forward to each one. A small suggestion-the volume of your music track overwhelms your voice and makes it hard to focus on what you’re saying. Consider recording the music at a significantly lower level. Good stuff, though.

The only other photographer that I am aware of who is "color concious" in this style of photography, is Alex Webb. Can you recommend some others I should look into which are similar to Webb or Gruyaert?

I was actually just checking my notes and I had the Alex Webb there as well. I am not sure why it didn't make it to the final script. His has th most similar style. Other than that a big coloraturas photographer is Steve Mccurry. I have recently found on the instagram Dimitry Stepanenko @dmitstep. Check him out. I like his work a lot!

The pursuit of a personal style makes me anxious. I look at portfolios of fellow photographers and find a pattern, a style, an easily recognizable something that makes me say: "yes, this a classic photo of his/her". But how can I commit to a single style when I like to experiment, try different things and shuffle the deck once in a while? I will probably never find my uniqueness, my personal style, but at least I won't preclude anything from my range of experiences.

  • @aboutphotography

One way I like to overcome this is simply by the volume of shot. I just try to shoot a lot and then I find like like 2/3/5 types of shots. I do not limit myself by certain style so I do not skip on shooting something just because I feel like it is nit my style. Even if I try to shoot color, I will photograph a scene which feels better BW. If that makes sense 😊

Very few photographers can make colour work in a photograph, Haas was one of them along with Leiter, possibly Eggleston, and defintley Gruyaert. There is no theory behind it but the way they saw the world. The irony is that now lamented Kodachrome, featured strongly in their photography. And they sold that lemon ' digital ' to us and we bought it.
