Magnific A.I. Detailer and Upscaler: Adding Realism To A.I. Images

You may have heard about "AI upscalers" where you can increase the size of an image and still retain the information. However, Magnific is a little different, in true form it is a detailer. It's slowly becoming popular in the generative world and I wanted to talk about it!
It takes your image and re-imagines it with the most photo-realistic detail as possible. I saw this being used in our community and wanted to try it for myself. I am not affiliated with them (I wish I was, I need more credits haha).
Although this requires a subscription starting at $40/month, I believe that this will be seen in the future in other applications, for a lower cost. Let's hope! You can also go the Stable Diffusion route and find detailers there.
In this video we take a look at look at the before/afters along with some of my preferred settings in order to achieve the best results. We’ll also define where it doesn’t work the best and what to do about it.
You can see it at magnific.ai

Magnific is charging for using things you can already do in Stable Diffusion (SDXL). They're likely using IMG2IMG to get improved details with denoise strength. They're then using an upscaler with further denoising to make it even clearer and larger. However, for the average "Joe," it's far too much legwork to try and get this done on their junky home PC. The near instant looking changes proves they're using an A6000 or better GPU. Their product is good for journeymen AI users, but not for professionals.

What I want to know upfront would be what is the maximum size for any image we would upload? I'm more interested in enhancing the detail of my images as their sample images demonstrated, than upscaling them. Because my photos are large enough already, it's the detail enhancement that interests me the most. Also, this appears to be an online app only. What I'd really like is either a standalone program i can download and use alongside Photoshop or, better yet, as a plug-in for Photoshop. Also, I'd want a permanent license instead of a subscription. I could see myself being willing to pay maybe $299 for that. That's about $100 over the price of Topaz Gigapixel, which does upscaling only. You know, come to think of it, the Only demo photos they're showing on the Magnific website are for the detail enhancement feature. We don't really know anything about how well Magnific upscales compared to Gigapixel or any others.

Unfortunately not like you would expect. However you can get one image going, and swap it out with another one and hit upscale before the first one is done.

The jobs in AI on the creative side could be creating imagery for people look for it who don't know how to do it. Mastering techniques and programs and coming up with offerings for people who are looking to fill a gap in the visual market. It's very open ended and could lead to a lot of new ideas that aren't thought of yet because it's so new.

You know, generative fill really surprised me. I didn't think they would have come out with a generational leap in tools so quick. So there's no telling! And with Adobe Firefly trying to be competitive, they may simply just make it user friendly and include a setting to be photo real in their generative results. Let's see! Things are changing so fast right?

  • @pratiknaikedu

That's a great idea and I will do that! In the meantime here's a general observation: Look at how each pixel in this image has been completely transformed, resulting in a significantly different and more detailed outcome with Magnific. This approach essentially recreates the entire image with enhanced details. In contrast, Topaz adopts a more conservative approach, aiming to retain the overall resemblance to the original image while eliminating any artifacts. It strategically fills in gaps where necessary but refrains from drastically altering the original content to the same extent. This distinction is the reason I categorize them as "detailer" and "upscaler," respectively. The former focuses on meticulous detail enhancement, while the latter prioritizes preserving the essence of the original image. I hope that helps in the meantime!

It does best with low res to higher res, you can use higher resolution images but it will cost more per generation. I wish there was a way to keep the resolution the same, while adding in the detail that I come to expect with it. A true detailer mode.
