What an incredible effort! I wish audio reviews back in my day could have demonstrated what you showed me here! It's wonderful to see young people who CAN hear beautiful music with all its pitches and details appreciate this audio medium. I have a pair of MG-1s that I started restoring today. To be honest, I bought the kits from Magnepan a few months ago. Today I took the sock off my first speaker and started taking notes on how things are wired. Your videos will play a big part of my success.

Have you tried your kg4's next to a Maggie? If the answer is no, you'll never know how your Klipsch sound like.

Usually I don't pay much attention to KZread sound comparisons, since there is so much between the viewer and the speaker under test. But man, that rock track sure highlights how "boxy sounding" the Klipsch are compared to the Magnepans. Makes me even more excited for the LRS that I'm on the waiting list to receive.

I just found your channel. Have been a Maggie owner for about 20 years and have owned them longer than any other speakers I have ever had. My previous speakers were ones I built and used for about 14 years and ended up selling them for almost as much as the Maggie's cost. The Maggie's are better! They are highly modded MMGs on home made based and reinforced frames, with modded crossovers and fuse bypassed. They are biamped with a pair of home built transmission line subwoofers. About 12 years ago I found a pair of MG2s at Goodwill for $10. They were labeled as "room dividers" lol. The tweeters were blown so I rebuilt them and sold the pair for $325 on Craigslist. The early Maggie's are definitely darker sounding than the newer models with quasi-ribbon tweeters.

A couple points to mention. Your placement was stifling them - you could get a LOT more out of those speakers if you gave them room to breath. Also, I personally found that elevating them solves the standing issue with no particular loss in performance (in a carpeted bedroom). Anyway, thanks for the video, and for the rebuild tutorial, as I need to do mine as well. I'm still hoping to talk Magnepan into 3D printing some wire jigs! Finally, you're absolutely right about Maggies being demanding of amps. My Kyocera receiver runs them beautifully, but I'm looking forward to trying out an AB International amp after rebuild......some day when I have a spare room to rebuild them in.

Howdy youtuber! I have paused the video at the 3 min mark, excellent presentation. I started watching because I just purchased a pair of great condition Klipsch KG4 speakers, and wanted a decent review. At this point in the vid I'm feeling a bias coming. comparing a passive woofer to a powered one is a bit sups. That is quite the handicap, but I wanna see what happens.

Neat stuff. Thanks for sharing. I like to fix stuff too. If I ever find some magnepan's at an auction, and they need help, I've got a guideline.

At one time I owned a pair of Magnepan MGII's. You didn't need to sit to hear them properly. Fabulous speakers!

I bought a pair of old Magnepan SMG's off of craiglist a couple years ago. Ran out of my receiver into an ancient crown amp and it was the most incredible sound i have ever heard. Not much bass but it didnt matter. Never heard anything like it. After a couple weeks one quit working and i took the sock off and the wires on the mylar were corroded. Magnepan said they could repair them for me but i had to wait till Winter was over. Lost interest in the project and here your video pops up on my feed. They are in a closet upstairs. hmmm...

Go for it! Yeah, something I forgot to mention in my rebuild videos is that the 30NF adhesive cannot freeze so they won't ship it during the winter months since they're in Minnesota.

I listened to a setup at a shop in San Antonio. They had planar left and right channel, a planar center channel and I think a subwoofer. Been a few years. Anyway they had the first Jurassic Park playing. It was the scene in the rain when the T-Rex escapes. UN FREAKIN BELEIVABLE! It sounded like I was surrounded by rain. The clarity and "invisibility" of the speakers was beyond anything I'd heard before or since. Hoping I can scrape together the money to set up a system in my new house.

I know you released this a while ago... Hope you still have the Maggies. I agree the standard models always sounded dull and quite rightly would respond to a tweak of hf. I guess you know about the Magneplanar ribbons. Their ribbon is simply one of the finest tweeter/midrange units ever produced along with the Quad esl 57.( I've been in the industry for over 40 years and heard almost everything). Nothing better I know of.

quite a difference in sound, i think you exemplified it v well. i would argue that with sound reproduction, headroom is where it's at, not necessarily displacement... i suspect because of the ultra large diaphragms, these speakers start beaming at quite lower fqs than regular ones.. in a sense the high fqs get projected from the center of the panels so leaning them back would elevate 'the sweet spot', if the listener so chooses. my experience with large radiation sound sources: everything is a compromise, having large radiating surfaces does come with disadvantages... a few months ago we built a set of dipole arrays, 16 4" full range transducers, and while the efficiency is quite astonishing (+6dB every doubling of the speakers/mutual coupling) they are too directional for listening closer than let's say 30ft. we managed over 100dB above 80Hz at about 20ft with under 75W per channel (the arrays can take ~400W continuous and much higher peak).

I’ve been an audiophile since 1975 that’s over 40 years, when you connect up an old vintage MidFi equalizer in the signal path or a MidFi active crossover you’re reducing the quality of the signal path! If you do the test going straight out of the Marantz receiver in pre-mode to the amplifier it should definitely sound better than the way you’re doing it now! Also using inexpensive interconnect cables is also going to interfere with the signal quality, I’m familiar with Bob Carver Amplifiers. better interconnects will result in a better sounding result.

it wouldn't sound better since the given speakers lack in both the high and low ends... that was a great use of the EQ :} * also, no cable/wire can do the job of even a very limited EQ. but an EQ can compensate for the high frequencies loses in v long cables.

I agree with Kaplan adding a equalizer to your system is going to degrade your sound and your trying to improve the sound means the pre amp and the amp are not doing their job if u have a better amp u won’t need a equalizer but u still have a very nice system but if u want to improve the sound from your Maggie’s u should look into a Peachtree amp which has 400 watts going into 4ohm which the Maggie’s need also Maggie’s need to be tall I have the 2.7 model and at 6 feet tall they produce sound which u don’t need to sit in the middle to enjoy the sound that’s what Maggie’s so good they produce a wide sound stage more then any box speakers but u definitely need a sub to get those deep lows also don’t worry if u have too much power to the Maggie’s because they will handle any amount I was listening to the 3.6 model and he had 600 watts 4ohm going into them with no problem more watts is better

@@dmptcb Yep, re-equalising the eq that has already been done in the recording studio by the engineer with a cheap graphic equaliser is never a good idea as it introduces colouration to the original recording, also the subwoofer connected on the preamp outputs will be affected by the low frequency cut. The Maggies will play louder with the bass removed from their electrostatic drivers, however, having their bass present will allow the subwoofer to play at a lower frequency cut-off, therefore becoming sonically less intrusive as it will only be generating the lowest of notes. To me, the only eq/room correction device worth its salt was the Cello Audio Palette which had very subtle frequency controls and was built like a Swiss bank vault. It was more like a room tuning tool than it was an equaliser. The big drawbacks were it's cost and limited production run. This is just my opinion: to each their own.

In my experience, the pans don't need EQ or a sub. But cool.review man, great presentation.

Great A/B comparison. Now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I do not want Magneplanar speakers.

I would love to hear your take on the infamous, JBL 4311b studio monitors. I have the original pair that I got in 1978 and I have purchased four pair since then. I love the sound these reproduce. Not ‘all’ are fans, but, I am one. My hearing is lacking in the treble range from years of shooting firearms without protection, “not recommended”, but they still sound good to me. Sorry to be off topic, but I have a pair of Magnepan that I bought new in 90's from a dealer. The model is the MG12/QR. One of the speakers stoped working recently and I opened it to see if something was wrong. I'm confused about the connections at the bottom end. If I send you a pic can you tell me if something is not connected or maybe give me some tips about how can I fix it? I'm planning to do an crossover upgrade but until there, Id like to make it runs again. Thanks!

what is the turntable? It's a SONY. My fav speakers from the oldy but moldy days are the ESS Heil Air motion drivers.

In a direct comparison most speakers sound muffled and with a small soundstage. There isn't wrong with the speakers. If you have not heard magnepan yet you should consider. They will make other speakers sound like they are broken. Yes it is that dramatic.

I owned a new Carver m200t many years ago. The right channel failed three times requiring factory repair. I finally sold it at a loss (with full disclosure to the buyer about the problems). I wonder if anyone else has or had this problem or if I just got a lemon.

You're talking about ocd mike in Atlanta , he lives near me we are both magnepans freaks . He uses dipole subs and custom crossovers. I use 4 subs two out of phase two in phase up to 18 inch subs driven by 2.4kw of class d amplification. If you dial that in right subs and maggies, there is not much out there that will outdo them. Aside from maybe a apogee on somewhat better clarity ends there really

@@MichelLinschoten haven't listened to a dipole sub, just 'regular' dipoles and indeed they sound v pleasant... given the required power to reproduce low frequencies (extremely inefficient), i'm not sure how the distortion levels can be that much lower compared to a proper modern subwoofer.

So standing the Mg's kill the K's. I popped a set of DCM TF-600's and thought the tweeters were not working off the same Amp.

The most dramatic sound difference Ive ever heard on utoob. Magis blew Klipsch away. Im in the market to replace my Klipsch speakers/sub and wondered if my Carver M400 could drive Magis. You proved it. Ive read Magis arent great for rock. Yours did sound better with the jazz than rock, but still better than Klipsch. Replacing the muddy Klipsch sub with a Rythmik servo or Rel would take it to another level.

Almost bought a set of Maggie's. Didn't know the off axes was so bad/different. Kind of glad I didn't as it wouldn't have worked in my setup. Bought a set of dcm tf600 also big and am very pleased with them. Pushing them with sansui 9090db

I like the tf600 a lot but I run M&K s1 with a volkswoofer. And then I run s2b with the next gen volkswoofer. I have about 20 sets of speakers. As a big sansui fan I have been picking them up for years. I believe I have 8 but I hope one day to retire and restore all of them. My 9090 is my prize reciever. Thanks for the info. I will pick up a set and let you know what I think.

why use a graphic eq and not the tone controls on the marantz pre?

The EQ provides higher resolution/more control than the treble knob. It only needs a boost with the highest frequencies.

They sound good, but do they taste good?

2270 is notorious for being bad with 4 ohm speakers. The 2275 had this issue corrected.

Can someone explain how these speakers produce the low frequencies??

They produce them the same way they produce all the other frequencies. But because of that, they're very limited in the low range (below 50hz) so that's why I use a subwoofer.

How are you running the sub off the preamp? Does it have an RCA sub out or are you running high level? Getting a pair of .7’s and will have to integrate a sub at some point:)

Good question! I'm using RCA splitters. One in each "pre out" jack on the Marantz, then one side goes to the EQ and the other goes to the sub.

Thanks! It's a BSR EQ-5000. I found it at a garage sale about 15 years ago.

That is an incredible difference between standing and seated on the magnepan! But is also a bit of a turn-off, if they don't sound their best outside of the perfect seating position, then they are not for me.

Magnepan are cool and also quite cheaper than the really hifi floors standing might just get them

So, I guess you should just sit down, don't move, & enjoy the Maggies. I've heard a lot of horn speakers & never heard one sound that flat on top, almost muffled. Almost seems like something could be wrong with the horn driver or crossover.

For giggles, try bypassing the eq and retest. Eq's all introduce added distortion and, to me, not worth having. I have played with a number of Eq's even the high-end adc ss3c, various Kenwood's. Yamahas, Luxam etc. They all added their own distortions. What sounds best to me, 40 years as an engineer, is a good amp with as flat a response, a decent. CD and turntable, short cables, and decent speakers. As you have demonstrated, Klipsch and Electrostatics are different. A pair of DML"s done right, most are not, is impressive. I have a pair of Klipsch Heresies from 1979, which I have heavily modified and they are very good. My single driver Lowther's in my tightly designed bass reflex cabinets, 145 lbs each, are also very good. However, the most important aspect of audio is to enjoy the music and not get too bogged down with tweaks, though, I have done many. Glenn DSM Labs

In the lower frequencies, the membranes tend to "slap" the magnets and make noise. Taking those low frequencies away from the maggies and putting them on a dedicated subwoofer allows you to listen at higher volumes and have it sound good.

I think the idea behind the Magnepans is you get a "big" sound as opposed to louder or richer. You get a visceral experience. Newer Magnepans will have a better fuller, as well as the big sound, without the subwoofer or equalizer.

Let's be honest... a $900 set of speakers better outperform a $300 set of kg4's. I have a set of kg4 speakers I'm happy with but I don't pretend they're more than they are.

The Maggies sound best, but I think they would have sounded better without the treble boost. I think eq semi-flat sitting down with them would be Nirvana. The Klipsch sounded OK, but with the last rock tune after the Maggies they sounded poor. Cool test though.

I've got my almost 50 year old pair in front of me. I haven't really turned them on since I got married because my wife is sensitive to noise. I remember them as sounding great. Maybe now they need restoration.

Those are cool speakers and you could really tell the difference when you sat down, but I'm perfectly happy with my acoustic research studio speakers to blow out my eardrums...lol

Apart from the fact that you rather record the room acoustics than the speaker with such videos, the KG 4 definitely does not sound like a KG 4 should. I assume that this version needs a new crossover. I myself own a KG 4 and it sounds completely different in a positive way.

Hm. It sounds like you had the treble turned up and added a subwoofer compared to the Klipschs. That would be remarkable had you not actually turned up the treble and added a subwoofer compared to the Klipschs. I understand what you’re trying to achieve here, and I applaud your efforts. But this is flawed experiment from the get-go.

Not same SPL. Need s DB meter to compare apples to apples. You are running double SPL it's not a fair test.

Magnepans sound Like a big transistor radio and the klipch sound blown up and you lack a power amp .

Have to agree that the KG4s are not recorded with accurate, representative tonal balance. I have heard them and I know something's off, because although they weren't my favorite compared directly to my Fortes, nobody would like their sound as presented here. I appreciate the thought behind the demo, though. It makes perfect sense that the Maggies would sound best straight-on because the distance difference between closest and farthest points of radiation is reduced, resulting in less time smear, and also if you have a "tweeter" that large, it's gonna be super directional.

Clearly you haven't heard Maggies :) I've had my KG4's for a long time as well and have even upgraded the horns with Crites titanium diaphragms. No socks. They're fantastic speakers and I really like them, but when you put them next to these MG-1's, they simply sound different. The goal of the demonstration is to give the viewer an idea of what that difference is, working on the assumption that most people have heard a speaker like a KG-4 in person but not a planar magnetic speaker like a Magnepan. Anyone who wants to replicate this demonstration may come to the conclusion that the KG-4's are better than MG-1's. There are things the KG-4's do better than the MG-1's, but as an overall listening experience, in my opinion, despite their deficiencies, the MG-1's are better.

I don’t think KG4s are such a great thing to beat. You should of gotten an Orchard audio mega amp

That’s the problem with Magnepans. You need other auxiliaries to make them sound well, as good as you can. It’s just not worth it. Plus the wife won’t like the “Door type look” speakers.

Sorry! I dont own either, but you were always in the AG-1's, would have done the same if you would have put the mic down by your shins! Get your 4's off the floor if thats what your looking for as a true comparison with holding a mic at different levels

The Klipsches don't sound right. They sound muffled in the rock demo especially. This is not a good comparison between the 2 speakers since the klipsh dound off.

Add a sub and there is not much that compares to maggie. On my channel you can hear a demo of the old flagship . Even on that recording it's like they are singing are in the room. And the sound they produce is because of the back wave , they are dipole line source drivers. Make sure you have a bare backwalls to improve its performance. Good current amplifiers makes them sing, they are really impedance friendly speakers (resistive load) they are low sensitivity. So clean power is warranted. Get a mgII that's the 6ft big brother of your mg1 (I am rebuilding one too as we speak) . The m2 will have less vertical axis constrain. I have the mgII, mgI , Tympani I, MMGW

Funny you say that. I purchased a broken pair of MG-II's a few weeks ago! I can't rebuild them yet since I don't have a space that is both heated and well-ventilated, but once spring comes along they will be my top priority project. There will absolutely be a comparison video coming in the future. I'd like to have MG-III's someday, or any model with the ribbon tweeter.

@@AHFixIt yah the mgII I use as a center speaker , I rebuild mine about two years ago. Also don't worry about ventilation to much , they glue isn't that harsh really. It's just a 3m bond glue, also you don't have to redo bass-mid wires as a whole. It's rare you have too, just glue the delamination .. Tweeter wires are usually the ones that suffer the most. Saves you painstaking work , and the speakers will not really perform better with new vs old bass-mid wires. It's needless hassle, considered that you won't gain any audible quality (given that they are still in decent overall shape) Saves you time and needlessly glueing 😁

Yeah, unfortunately with my MG-1's one bass wire was bad so I did both. These MG-II's however, I purchased them from the original owner who appears to have taken excellent care of them. I haven't tested or taken the speakers apart myself yet, but he said the bass wires are fine and that they only need tweeter wires. So you're right, maybe I'll just get it done in the kitchen one weekend with the leftover wire and glue that I have from the MG-1 rebuild.

@@AHFixIt no worries the glue is really jkt harsh on you (still smart to open a window offcourse) logic there. But yah the bass wires if they are fine, give them a nice little coat of the glue. And be done with it, by now you know how pain staking those can be to replace. Even with a jig ... Doing the tweeter wires are IMHO the easiest to replace one loop that's it. Welcome to the magnepan family buddy, always great to see someone take speakers like this on and get what these can do.

Your comparison, while challenging, is a farce. The way that you set your equipment for each speaker system is ridiculous. I do not aspire to bad mouth the way your Maggie's sounded but I feel like I didn't really hear them. In regards to either your KG4's or the way that you set your equipment for them...a crime. It can be said that that "everyone is good for something, even if it is the best example of how not to do something".
