I’ve got the 3575H unit that originally came with a 160GB PATA drive. I bought a SATA converter card and popped a 500GB SATA drive in the unit since it maxes out at 500GB. One thing to note is that most of these recorders only recognize 512 byte sectoring. If you try to use an SSD with 4K sectors, you may notice errors when erasing recordings and adding new ones. I used a 1TB 4K sectored drive and had that issue. You may try a future test video to see if it really needs 512 byte sectoring.

Finally I understand why, even with 3HDMI ports, my Westinghouse TV is crap. Thx! I despise misleading labels and sales people.

I have been using my Magnavox 500 gig DVR to record from a camera for years. I'd love to be able to record longer without having to empty out the memory. I hope this video is a way to do this.

I picked up one of these also at a thrift store. There were a lot of home movies on the drive that i assume were VHS transfers to DVD. I saw on a forum that you could extract the videos from the drive by dumping the entire raw contents of the drive to a file on a PC and running a media recovery program on it. When i did this i discovered quite a few pornos that had been deleted from the machine long with the family videos.

Friend, I was feeling extremely sad and crap today, as my magnaovx died, but wacthing this video cheered me up, I now see how easy would be to replace to a new drive and restore my unit. thanks you so much for this video!!

Thanks for putting this video together - did you, by any chance, notice a difference in the performance of the unit with an SSD compared to the stock drive? I'm thinking specifically of the clip browser loading times, page turns, etc.

Hey,I watched your video on the "2012" era Magnavox hdd DVD recorder. wow it worked! You really got. good Magnavox normally I should clean my fan good idea. It is louder than when I got it . I just paid with shipping around $254.00 for a model mmdr557/hdF7 hope my used machine will work as it's just been shipped.

at 7:15 it should be possible but therefore it is needed to dump out the firmware from the TSOP48 flash on the motherboard and reverse engineer the firmware to delete the HDD Max LBA lock that is coded in the firmware itself

How was fast-forward after you upgraded to SSD? Was there any difference in the fast forwarding appearance like less jumping and smoother? What are your better options for VHS to digital? Are any of them using the HDMI output and an Elgato PCI card?

You know, I don't recall ever thinking to test that. As for my other capture option, I feed my VCR signal into an ADVC 3000 which seems to help sync video & audio and send that to a Blackmagic Intensity 4K PCI card.

That's great! Glad you were able to keep your recorder up and running.

I occasionally go to the thrift store and flea mkts, looking for different items, and see plenty of dvd players, but never one of these. I do have 4 of these units, and the newest one(515) quit a couple years ago, after the electricity went out for a short time. The other 3 still work fine. Can you format the hdd from one of these units to use on a pc?

I can't confirm, but I don't see why not. However, these drives are only 5400 RPM and are probably at least 10 years old so I wouldn't recommend it.

I have had one of these units for a decade or so. It worked great until about 2 months ago. Now, it seems to lose its mind looking for channels I ask it to record. It’s hit and miss. Is there some sort of hard reset somewhere? Or is there an onboard battery that could be weak? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't use this unit on a daily basis myself, but from the few forums I've looked at it might be the way some channels are encrypted from your TV provider through those cable boxes they provide. Although, it might just be a case of just re-scanning the channels through the Magnavox to see if that works.

Ugh. The "+" and "-" crap. I have two recorders, and plenty of DVD RW's! They both spit them out, except for my mini dvd rw. That is the only "-" dvd rw in my stash. Bonus points to the Sansutsi for having it's drive just... Not work for some reason. It never spins, but the optical pickup does atleast DO something. Thankfully that thing is just IDE, and it accepts other drives too. Maybe someone can rig up a dvd burner emulator so that the optical drive can be replaced with a high end microcontroller and SDCard. Or better yet, get one of those USB composite dongles and gut the recorder for parts.

Hello...I have the same Magnavox DVR. When I record certain programs off cable TV, I get a lock that says I cannot record to a DVD. Is there a way to 'unlock'' these videos?

Hi, mvpfrankc, I pulled up the manual and it mentions that copy-protected material (such as some cable broadcasts) can't be recorded using the unit. You did mentioned it only happens on certain programs, maybe the channel you recorded from has a copy protection protocol in place that prevents burning to DVD. If that's that case I'm afraid I can't help there.

You might be able to find a replacement power supply. Really depends on your comfort level around power supply components and such as to whether you should attempt to replace it.

Sorry for the late reply, but if you're using the actual remote that came with the unit it should be next to the channel buttons. I was able to find the code with a Google search.

I am in a dispute with a vendor over dvd's ordered from them on motivational topics. the talks should be 4 to 5 hours but the dvd's cut off after less than 30 minutes of play. They obviously were not loaded correctly. They are claiming I downloaded the info and want to return them for a scam. I absolutely did not. They are the scammers. My question is this - What type of professional should I lookup locally to get the dvd's reviewed so I can prove to my credit card company to refund my money in this dispute. The vendor said no refund and I can keep the dvd's which is very interesting. Any input you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

The video showed me using a spare SSD, so yes, an SSD with a SATA port should work fine.
