I worked the entire decade of the 1970's for a Magnavox dealer and serviced these sets daily. The transistors in the envelopes are post Philips takeover of Magnavox and carry the Philips part numbers which were the same for all Philips lines ie Sylvania and for a short time Philco. At the time we had a cross reference between the old and new part numbers. Magnavox transistor part numbers start with 61 usually the entire number is not printed on the transistor. I have a full set of Magnavox factory manuals. As far as the motors in the changers they are very robust and in all my time I never saw more than a handful bad, usually bearings worn out from lack of lubrication. The motors are 4 pole shaded pole induction motors. Contrary to what some have said in certain internet groups there are no permanent magnets in these motors.

@@krystinasaragos1535 The quickest way for me to identify the correct styllus for your unit would be to have a picture of the old stylus. If that's not possible a picture of the record changer would narrow it down to a couple of different stylii. If I have to go back to the manuals I'lll have to sort through many product guides to determine what changer your set used and then I'll need a run number to pick out the correct needle. Magnavox model numbers were almost usless to a Magnavox Technician since all of our service liturature was filled by the individual chassis numbers of the pieces that made up the unit ie radio chassis, record changer chassis etc. It can be done but it'll take a little time, But if I had to guess it would be a Magnavox part number 560345-1 or 557-DS77 available on ebay from a bunch of sellers. Good Luck

Very nice repair! That'll make a great radio. Side story, when my 95 year old neighbor died a few years back the family came in and dumped everything in his house with about 6 30 yard dumpsters. I dug through and found tons of old receipts, and things like service records and sales reciepts for his old late 20's early 30's car repairs from long gone car dealerships in my town. It was sad, I tried to save what I could.

I briefly worked for Goodwill a couple of years ago; we got people coming in and dumping tons of stuff from their parents' or grandparents' houses all the time - the stuff they couldn't sell on eBay or Craiglist, that is. And little known fact - Goodwill literally tosses about 80 percent of the donated stuff into the trash. Against rules, I fished a bunch of record albums out of the dumpster one day - you know, those old books of 78s. Not in the greatest of condition, but in one of them was a 12 inch record made in 1919. I lost that job because I dug that record out; they had a seriously demented policy about it, but damned if I was going to let a 100-year-old record go to the landfill. It wasn't even all that valuable; I see the very same records on eBay for like $10. Screw it, though. It was a minimum wage job, only a side job in the first place, and it technically wasn't 'theft' because it had been thrown in the garbage. I was pretty much done with the job anyway; it was depressing to see how a person's life can be so easily dismantled and sold off or discarded piece by piece. All in the name of a quick buck or two.

I asked if an authorised Lions member fish it out for me and he said the latter phrase, it was out of arm's reach, all I saw was the back of the record jacket, It could have been in bad shape or they don't like Cosby (infamous sex offender) and there were off air VHS tapes as well, 2 USB DTV receivers I saw last week disappeared, Reinhard who does the electronics said they could be in the e-waste bin, no sign there, another member told Reinhard they got thrown, Reinhard was kind enough to let me have the remote that was part of the disposed boxes, I've always gotten along well with Reinhard all the years I attended the Lions, some other members are conservative as fk who have caused me problems in the past, old Rita I heard passed away 3 years ago, well liked John Hodson passed June this year, he always said jeepers at the amount of VHS tapes I get paying him at the till

You done a good job restoring this vintage MAGNAVOX STEREO. The one thing that I hated was the phonographs on some of those models back then. The most Notorious (not Notorious BIG the rapper) was BSR! The model on the one you worked on my phonograph did the same thing when it arrived in 1968, that was a DELMONICO small size console. It contained a section to hold a four way glasses holder & to the corner right an oval shaped opening to lower level for more glasses. A small luxury at that time for some of stereo systems. In 1982 future BSR models couldn't fit the previous one mounting holes cut outs. So I shopped for a replacement that would fit the 1968 concept it was GARRARD. It had slight teething problems. It did almost like the BSR did, not returning to automatic stop! It got worse the cartridge was not sending out any sound at all due to the receivers low power & watts. I returned it and with no experience with models built in the late 1960s the dealers and stereophonic sound testers weren't expertise at all. I read about this later in STEREO REVIEW someone experienced the same situation with the low powered metal cartridge way under 50 watts. Mine probably was 10 watts a channel. I still have a solid state of that model it was a replacement from the old vacuum tubes. What do you do if you wanted to play a much better quality turntable that can't send out enough power signals? I wouldn't want my records skipping or mis tracking! Some of them are replicas of later record players have had bad reviews they get stuck or in your phonographs case failing to go on the right size record or not returning when the record is finished! Any how this is inspirational I wish we had electronic stores again for a hobby 100% missed by yours truly! Longing to do models from the eras of 1968 to the mid 1990s. I'm restorating my late 1980s cabinets I custom built this and my 3 vintage models 2 DELMONICO'S & 1 JVC and a 1980s FISHER STUDIO STANDARD.On your phonograph it's probably the robotic mechanism or the screws you spotted may need to be replaced. There is another video on how to repair most models I saw it in 2020 very informative and for later use! Happy Hobbies & enjoy the music I'm glad I viewed. 👏👏👏👏👍👍

This brought me back to when I was 18 or 19. My neighbor (my 'best" friends mom) gave me her 66 or 67 Magnavox Astro Sonic Stereo Theater . It was double the length of yours, because it had a large color TV set mounted in the middle. It had the same large woofers and voice horns. It sounded great..but the tv didn't work. Everything was green. I should have kept it, but after spending a few hundred on non-existent "repairs'. I couldn't justify keeping it just for the stereo. It was so large ! Can't wait to hear this one !! peace

This stereo is very similar to the one I have from my parents. The record changer looks identical to the changer in my unit. I had mine in for repair about a year and a half ago due to a low hum in radio and auxilary modes. It was due to six bad capacitors. Record changer was lubricated and works great. The only thing I have to do when playing records is let it run idle for about 2 to 5 minutes because there's a slight wow and flutter when it first starts up, but after it warms up and continues running; its perfect. No wow or flutter at all and according to the service technician when he tested it; the speed is dead on after it warms up from a cold start. Love the sound it has and also modified the external speaker set up by adding a terminal strip on the back with jumper wires coming from the original connectors for easier hookup. The only minor issue and not too concerned with it at this point; is the left channel in phono mode is softer than the right. Technician told me that the cartridge may eventually need replaced. I mostly use it for 78rpms and the special 16rpm background music records since they're mono anyway. I do play 33s and 45s ocassionally just to keep all the speeds working properly. Also put in a replacement pair of Quam 12" woofers at 8ohms. Had foam surround woofers in it before but they weren't giving the right sound. The Magnavox Quams sound better being they're a hard cone and designed for this type of unit.

What a nice system, and that is why I'm watching your video. This model of Magnavox Asto Sonic was the first audio system that I purchased as a teenager in 1966. I loved the unit and enjoyed it for many years. The only issue I experienced was crackling in the resister pots which were replaced, and then failed again in a few years. The stylus was a wear item that was changed on a regular basis. My snobby friends chided me until bought high audio, then I got to experience some very expensive repair bills that go hand in hand with expensive audio systems.

Two things to note that may help with this one or in the future: 1) You can use non-lubricating contact cleaner (MG Super Wash or the like) on the tuning cap, and then compressed air afterwards (keyboard duster or other low pressure methods). Cleans them right up and does not leave residue or "gum". 2) There is a pad circuit on the line input on most of those Mag consoles (right on the RCA jacks themselves), if you remove this, then you will get much greater sensitivity using external line level or headphone level devices. I do this as a standard mod on the consoles I restore at my shop. Happy fixing. Good work on this one.

@@matthewdavies2057 Do you think it was the Bluetooth device itself, or possibly the crappy switching power supply they invariably provide with them? I've not had that issue with mine, but then, my Bluetooth receiver isn't located inside the unit. I'd love to eliminate the separate line boost I have to use with mine, can you describe this 'pad' circuit you mention? I don't recall seeing it in my '67.

  • @drewleclair1281

    @drewleclair1281

@mathewdavies , the "howling" is likely a harmonic of the Bluetooth signal if the receiver is mounted too closely to the radio chassis. I have similar problems with cell phones and guitar amps in the studio. Or, as @xaenon suggested, I've had cheap AC to USB charger devices create nasty AC line leakage into the audio path in different scenarios. Both things to address. @xaenon , the pad is in the form of four resistors, mounted right to the RCA jacks on the jack terminal plate on the rear of the cabinet. It's an L configuration, so a resistor in series with the center pin and one from center pin to ground, on each channel. You can simply clip the ground-referenced resistor to increase the input impedance, therefore increasing sensitivity.

Nice job on the restoration. I have the same changer as this one, but yours needs some adjustments. The tonearm had some slight issues in the auto cycle. There’s two screws on the right side of the tonearm is where you can adjust it to make it a lot better. The bottom screw is where you land on any size position might be 12”, 10” and 7” where a tonearm will tap the edge of the record, and the top screw will adjust the height to raise the tonearm a bit. I did these a few months ago after I got my stand-alone Magnavox Micromatic where it came out of a busted Magnavox Full Dimension portable stereo record player which was in a very poor shape. I cleaned it, lubricated, and everything works like a beauty. It has an auto shutoff switch after the last record, it rejects itself where the tonearm moves back and forth that there were no records left and then shuts off completely. These two screws which is on the right which is next to the tonearm where it needs adjustments. Magnavox made the best Astro Sonic consoles from that era, and it was originally in Fort Wayne, IN before it was bought by North American Philips company and turned into crap known as “Crapnavox”. During that time, they made the Odyssey, the very first video game console in 1972 where it featured a “Pong” game, and other games that has a collection of overlays to put on your CRT TV set to play a game, and that was an early experiment with a video game console.

It almost looks like the record changer "thinks" that it has a 7" 45 rpm disk. You would have to disassemble the speed control and mechanical linkage to the tone arm to troubleshoot (not fun). I had to fix a few of these back in the day when the owners insisted on having a working changer. I agree with you that a modern manual turntable is infinitely superior if you care about the condition of your prized vinyl. Fedron can often restore old dried-up pinch rollers and phono disks. It was originally used to restore typewriter platens and other rubber parts. It's still available. Thanks for the great videos. Keeps old timers like me out of trouble during this pandemic.

Same year as yours, even, and almost identical to the one in the vid (the only difference I can see is the cabinet trim). I paid $60 for mine and there was no indication it was ever opened up. Sounds gorgeous but it's starting to hum a little, so I figure it's probably time to get it serviced.

For a bit of perspective, I signed on my hometown police department in 1973 after getting out of the army, took a cut in pay from my army salary to $400.00 per month as a rookie patrolman. That was enough to support my good wife and 2 kids with a place to live and food on the table. Not much more, we had an old beat up car I purchased when I was a soldier in Texas and a few sticks of furniture. I did have a small stereo that I picked up in Vietnam, but it was not much, of course we thought it was great back then. So that combo cost more back then than a months salary for a rookie cop.

You can change the value of the line input impedance matching network resistors to accommodate the lower input signal level of the iPhone. Most of these Magnavox units had the input resistors mounted right on the input jack board where your hand was. Also those turntables are usually a breeze to fix and they're quite reliable, that one just has sticky grease on the size selector lever underneath. The arms don't track too terribly heavy, should be around 4 grams or less.

Since that record changer is a ceramic/crystal cartridge, that input could be used as a line input. That cartridge probably puts out 1-1.5V and there is no RIAA deemphasis on a ceramic/crystal phono stage, as RIAA was implemented for magnetic cartridges and the natural response of those nonmagnetic cartridges, for the most part, follows the curve. It might be a little tinny since if it was designed properly it would have about a 1 Megohm input impedance, but then again it might just be 47k like a line in.

Anyway, part of the price difference was probably due to the fact that it had real bass and treble controls; Magnavox always seemed to charge more for those freaky 4 position switches and the inexplicable "timber" control, their attempted solution to a non-problem.
