I am not that surprised by the sledgehammer trick. The relatively low force needed to break the rock in comparison to its inertia doesn't result in much impact to the dude

I thought Houdini drowned? He was an escape artist as well and couldn't get loose from either a straight jacket or chains after being submerged in water. I'm not sure if it's a myth now. I'll check....i shouldn't have questioned a magician. He died from appendicitis after his abdominal wall had been swollen in what I'm assuming is being hit by a sledgehammered rock just like you said. I'm in Miami Florida.
