I don't like it how people with no discernible talent get to pass judgement on people who go to all the effort to create, develop and perform an act. Those who can, do. Those who can't, judge.

It's not rude at all. It's honest. If you watch a magic trick and can think of only one way it could have been done, that's probably how it was done. I've seen a similar trick performed with Tibetan singing bowls. Singing bowls don't have giant reservoirs at the base. Ben Hart used bowls with those big reservoirs to store everything. The judges, at least, knew (or could guess) that's how the trick was performed because it was the only way. The magic was not that impressive and neither was the method. It felt like it was missing the final pay off of a good performance. It felt abandoned two-thirds through.

@@JumblyJumble Obvious magic can still be awesome with a great presentation. Unfortunately... he _shouldn't_ have followed up the "that's not the trick" joke with a legitimately unimpressive "trick". But I think his body language was the biggest nail in the coffin. He conveyed a huge lack of confidence (a couple of awkward laughs after jokes, looking up after the actual rice trick for approval from the audience, the rushed pace of his storytelling, etc), and your body language has one of the biggest impacts (if not the biggest impact) on how your audience perceives / responds to you. But we all have our bad days. Who knows what he might have been going through at the time? Dude kills it on the regular and is definitely beating me at the magic and showmanship game 😛

I wouldn't listen to the judge at all - they're dumb. However, it is true that the output had no philosophical depth and no wow effect. Water forced the hydrophobic granules, aka rice, into the free space of the hemisphere. The water was prepared in a mantle tank and poured into the second hemisphere by flipping. It really isn't for any story, motivational or otherwise. Not everything looks good in conjunction with a fictional story. Such spells are performed in a sub-program of better spells.

It feels like his stage setup is for something big, but then he does close-up magic. Howie nails it with "How do we see that"? With the setup/cameras you can't appreciate the magic he does. With some tweaks, and some more practice on the presentation, this could be a great trick. Some great ideas, we're just never given the chance to appreciate them.

Like fold up the water and transition the story telling into a clean up vanish set.

This was about as sophomore a performance as I have ever seen. The trick itself is an old self-working chestnut, using cleverly deceptive bowls. The magician put no real effort into creating a miracle out of this material. This was a magician demonstrating the sin of pure laziness. He rushed the whole delivery. I hope he learns the correct valuable lesson from this. It's not about big versus little, or loud versus quiet, or flashy versus subtle. Its about art versus mediocrity, and only art will win.

  • @GigiHudnall

I think the trick would have been much better if the camera was close up, or he was closer to the judges, or whatever. His build up was cool, but when he told his story, it lacked something. I can only think he missed his dress rehearsal where he tells the camera where to be, etc. It was really more of a close up trick and he got lost behind the "river" which cut him off from the audience. Maybe they told him he could not spill any rice on the stage and he wanted something see-through... In any event, I don't think the story built, and the magic was less than mind-blowing. Needs to be much more than this for the AGT Champions. As for the fable, I think a lot of us become discontent when we see things others have that we do not (a new TV, Computer, Car, etc.). That is kind of what commercials are designed to do: make you want something you don't need because someone else has it. I agree the moral is to be happy if you have everything you need; and don't make an ass of yourself trying to be someone you are not! ;-)

He did look puzzled or hesitant at the beginning like there was something missing that he expected to see. Possibly a change to the act forced upon him by the producers? Something to do with the grains of rice, perhaps. Something to shrink the audience's focus and make it more intimate. I think you put this in later. He saved the wrong act for later? Might not have been his choice. Could have been a last minute catastrophe like with Eric Chien. If I remember correctly.

Yeah, the moment where he goes to show the rice in the other bowl he seems to be required to improvise. "There's still rice in the bowl, that's important" doesn't sound like a line he would have scripted for his performance. Immediately after he started a sentence and had to restart it with another one. And then there seems to be a whole part of the storyline missing, he never talks about that the other man, his reflection, has bowls of water. He just says that there's a man showing bowls of rice, so I must hold his bowls of water. Seems he had to skip all of the storyline where the water was supposed to be introduced.

The "trick" was amazing, but the magic just wasn't there. A great story-line routine like that shouldn't have been presented the matter-of-factly, Davidblainey, woodenfacey way.

I know he can do better, but this particular performance was for laymen disappointing and for magicians even embarrasing. In my opinion buying a set of rice bowls from your magic dealer and adding a self made pattern to it is ok, but not a sign of champions league. At least he should have known, that leaving the judges of AGT with a philosophical thought would kill their attention immideately. Sad but true. :-D

It's a good trick but the presentation is very lacking...
