Di sumatra barat sendiri bukan hanya tinggal orang minang, disebuah pulau namanya kepulauan mentawai hidup orang2 suku mentawai yang mayoritas beragama kristen dan kepercayaan. Sementara di kita2nya seperti padang dan bukittinggi selain orang minang juga ada etnis china, arab dan india dan suku jawa, batak, mandailing, nias, aceh, dll. Apalagi padang adalah kota pelajar banyak mahasiswa dari berbagai macam daerah yg datang. Penduduk asli sumatra barat itu adalah orang minang yg beragama islam.
